September 30, 20222 yr Author imo burlington is one of the best college towns -- and we know many of them as my spouse used to sell textbooks.  its mostly in fantastic shape. you could see rehabs everywhere that were done in various eras. there were constant mini conventions held there like the antique boat show you see and others. i believe the main mall closed or shrunk, the downtown storefronts are full and there are lots of walkable areas.  downtown and church street aka the pedestrian street are very nice. the old northside is colorful and intact and i liked that best. it directly connects to winooski, a nice town centered around a pretty waterfalls that reminded me of chargin falls a bit. the southside has an old wareshouse-y strip that has been converted to zoomer and family friendly things and they have fun shops and festivals along there. below that its residential. the college is of course the main economic driver, as is it being a ski town respite -- and the small airport is excellent.  we visited the ethan allen homestead one afternoon, which had a well done docent tour and was interesting to hear about his and vermont's history. frankly, i had no idea about and had never even thought of this region lol.  also, the craft beer and natural foods things are off the charts good if you are into that, like we had organic sourdough maple and grape cake dounts that were best i ever had, even in this artisinal dount crazy world we have everywhere today.  the downsides are long ago along they tore down an entire little italy along the lakefront, i read about that on a plaque, although its well used parkland now. the lake access is still a bit awkward around downtown in that you cant swim there, but its fine for boating. downtown there is a huge fenced off lot that i guess went bust and has been there forever and is known as 'the pit' lol. also, the hotel prices were absolutely insane (unlike up in montreal where we also visited). politically vermont is very much liberal land everywhere, while its kissing cousin new hampshire is more magaville.  and lastly, i was looking forward to open weed rules there and in canada as its legal, but it isnt so in either place. not quite yet anyway. personally i don't smoke, but i thought edibles would be available. oh well. here's the latest on that:  Cannabis in Vermont Current Policies (updated Sept. 2022) In Vermont, Adults age 21+ can possess up to one ounce of cannabis, as well as two mature and four immature plants, for medical or adult recreational use. Only 5 medical dispensaries are currently in operation around Vermont, and the first recreational dispensaries are set to open in October. Also, dispensaries only accept Vermont state-issued medical cards at the current time. Lastly, using cannabis in public places is illegal.  there is some kind of problem in quebec too -- i went into a couple smoke shops and asked and the owners went off on the topic -- i picked up about half of it in franglish, but no dice and they aren't happy lol.
