Honda picks Fayette County for new $3.5 billion electric battery plant

Honda Motor Co. is investing more than $5.1 billion in electric vehicle production in Ohio, including a new $3.5 billion battery plant to be built in Fayette County and employ 2,200 workers.

The automaker, which already has a sizable presence in Ohio and specifically around Marysville, in late August said it was teaming up with Korea-based LG Energy Solutions to build lithium-ion batteries here in the U.S.

Tuesday morning, Honda (NYSE: HMC) announced that new plant, pending government approvals, will be located about 40 miles southwest of Columbus.

Bob Nelson, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co. Inc., in a roundtable event for press, said Ohio had the “experience, expertise and resources” to be the starting point for Honda’s North American EV future.

A little more from The Dispatch:

"The automaker also plans to spend $700 million to retool three of its Ohio plants to make electric vehicles and provide components for them.

The new plant, part of a joint venture with South Korean battery maker LG Energy Solution, will employ 2,200 workers. The three plants where the $700 million will be invested − the Marysville Auto Plant, the East Liberty Auto Plant and the Anna Engine Plant − will add 327 workers.

The company said Tuesday that the plant will be built in the Mid-West Mega Commerce Center, east of Interstate 71 and near U.S. Route 35, near Jeffersonville, about 40 miles southwest of Columbus and 70 miles northeast of Cincinnati. The state expects to make "targeted investments" to improve roadways in the area, said Ohio Department of Transportation Director Jack Marchbanks.

Workers in Anna, Ohio, will make the battery case that will be combined with the battery modules from the battery plant on a line at Marysville. The complete battery unit will be installed in electric vehicles by workers in Marysville and East Liberty, Ohio."

Honda's choice of Fayette County for its battery plant was 20 years in the making

Fayette County’s landing of a new $3.5 billion electric battery plant is a testament to persistence.

Honda Motor Co. and its joint-venture partner LG Energy Solutions will build the new production facility on roughly 500 acres near the Jeffersonville Prime Outlets, about 40 miles southwest of Columbus.

The property is part of a more than 1,500-acre site just off I-71 called the Mid-West Mega Commerce Center.

This isn’t the first time Honda looked at it.

Fayette County Commissioner Dan Dean, at a Tuesday event announcing the project, said what is now that site was pitched to Honda 20 years ago as a potential location for a new auto plant.

Honda ultimately chose a site in Greensburg, Indiana, for the that project.

Ohio offers $156 million in incentives for Honda battery project

“The state said Wednesday that it will offer tax incentives and infrastructure improvements totaling an estimated $156.3 million to Honda as part of the automaker's plan to invest at least $4.2 billion in a new battery plant to supply electric vehicles and to retool three of its Ohio factories.

Of the $156.3 million, $85 million will be for local water and transportation upgrades while the rest will be tax incentives over 30 years based on the estimated 2,500-plus jobs that Honda will create at the battery plant and at the other plants.

JobsOhio, the state's economic development arm, said it too will provide assistance for the Honda project as it does for other projects that create jobs around the state. That information will be made public once final details with Honda are worked out.

Of the $85 million for infrastructure improvements, $75 million will be for water and utility improvements and the rest will be to improve local and state roads, the state said.“

Seems like a pretty small amount for what this should bring in for the state.

I've read a few times that Honda was considering three or four other sites in Ohio before ultimately choosing this site near Jeffersonville.

If anyone comes across what the other locations were that were under consideration, if you could please pass them along, I would greatly appreciate it.  I'm very curious where the other sites under consideration were located.

State awards Honda $71 million in incentives for new battery plant

"The state of Ohio on Monday granted an estimated $71.3 million in tax breaks for Honda to build a battery factory in Fayette County, part of what is expected to be $156 million in state incentives for the project.

Honda announced Oct. 11 that it plans to spend at least $3.5 billion to build the factory with the South Korean company LG Energy Solution. The factory is expected to employ 2,200 workers when it opens in 2025.

As part of the announcement, Honda said it will also spend $700 million to retool three of its existing Ohio plants to make electric vehicles and components for them. Those plants - the Marysville and East Liberty auto plants and the Anna engine plant − are expected to add 327 workers as part of the changes.

In addition, the state has said it plans to spend $85 million on water and road upgrades to the site. Other financial incentives for the development are expected from the economic development agency JobsOhio and local municipalities."

Was out near Jeffersonville earlier, so I went by the new Honda plant site.

Not much to see yet just a lot of dirt being moved.

Kind of hard to see but this is about as close as you can get right now...

JobsOhio gives Honda, LG $237 million in grants for $4.2 billion Ohio investment

“JobsOhio has awarded grants totaling $237 million to Honda and LG Energy Solution for their plans to build an electric vehicle battery plant in southwest Ohio and for Honda's plans to retool three of its Ohio plants to make the vehicles those batteries will power.

The $237 million award is the biggest made by JobsOhio, the state's economic development group, easily topping the $150 million that it gave to Intel for its $20 billion semiconductor project in Licking County. The award reflects the state's lengthy historywith Honda, the first Japanese automaker to set up shop in the U.S.

The $237 million is broken into three chunks: A $140 million grant for the Honda and LG battery plant, a $10 million workforce grant for that plant and then $87 million to Honda for retooling the existing factories to make electric vehicles.

JobOhio says Honda and LG will invest $17.72 for every dollar in assistance from JobsOhio, which is funded by the state's liquor business.“

“Honda and LG will officially break ground on the project Tuesday even though work on the site began after the announcement.

Wholesale drug distribution company McKesson was actually the first business to develop on the site, taking 35 acres at the south side of the property.

Since Honda's announcement in October, the auto manufacturer has been working on the site to get it ready for construction of the buildings for the plant on the site it shares with Martin's soybean processing operations. Trucks carrying loads of rock and gravel rumble across the site all day.

Martin has gotten interest from other companies since Honda's announcement, but he is content for now to see how Honda's plans go.“

LG Energy Solution-Honda EV Battery Plant in Ohio Takes "Leap" Forward as Final Structural Beam Marks Major Construction Milestone

LG Energy Solution and Honda hit a big milestone Thursday on construction of their plant in Fayette County: erection of the final structural steel beam for the plant that is to begin producing batteries for Honda and Acura electric vehicles in 2025. The milestone comes as the companies gear up to hire the 2,200 workers who will be needed to run the plant.

Construction of the 2-million square-foot plant is on track to be finished this year. With the final steel beam in place, work this spring will focus on the siding, roof and final concrete slabs as well as the interior of the building, including the heating and cooling systems, electrical, plumbing and duct work.

Later this spring, the companies will start to install equipment in the plant. This fall, final work on the plant will be completed, including tests on the samples to be produced by the plant to make sure they meet quality, safety and other standards."

Amazon Web Services confirms Fayette County plans

"Amazon Web Services (AWS) officials confirmed Tuesday that Fayette County is the first site outside of central Ohio where AWS plans to establish new data centers — an estimated investment of $5 billion into the county.

“Jefferson Township in Fayette County is the first locality confirmed as part of our planned investment of $10 billion to expand data center operations in Ohio; AWS plans to invest $5 billion by 2030..."

The new data centers will contain computer servers, data storage drives, networking equipment, and other forms of technology infrastructure used to power cloud computing, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.

The new investment builds on the $7.8 billion investment plan announced by AWS last year, which was in addition to the more than $6 billion already invested through 2022, bringing the company’s announced planned investment in Ohio since 2015 to more than $23 billion by the end of 2030, according to a news release. This represents the second-largest planned investment by a single private sector company in the state’s history.

Construction on the data centers is expected to begin in early 2025."
