Adams Street is the fifth of six presidential streets starting at the Maumee River in the original Port Lawrence city plan.

Its lower reaches near the Maumee River once housed theaters and upscale shopping, its middle is accentuated by the Lucas County Courthouse and the Main Library.

In the numbered streets, Adams has quickly become the city's gay street. The opening of what is now the city's only gay bar - Georgjz419 - has made up for the closing of the iconic (for Toledo) Bretz, which was quickly purchased by a unfriendly church. On a brighter note, Georgjz is the first gay bar in Toledo to have windows so people can see out...and in.

The city has invested in a few rainbow symbols up and down the upper reaches of Adams.

These photos were taken almost two years ago, about eight months into the Covid pandemic. There are a few important buildings missing, perhaps the light wasn't right.

The start of the walk meandered around downtown, so we'll start at the Lucas County Courthouse.

Dedicated in 1964, the Richard T Gosser Memorial by Ohio artist Donald Drumm. Gosser was a beloved local labor leader.

Don Drumm is still living, I believe, with a studio in Akron. He made a similar sculpture on the BGSU campus commemorating the Kent State and Jackson State massacres.

One of a disappearing number of smokestacks in the area, I believe this was a water lift station for Old Towne and the Old West End. The station itself is now a residence.

Adams has fared better than than Madison and Jefferson Streets to be sure. Monroe Street, photos to come, is a main thoroughfare (OH 51) but suffers from similar ills along with the rest of Uptown.

Hope you enjoyed this quick walk up Toledo's Adams Street!

Ok it's admittedly been nearly 30 years since I lived in Toledo, but the Ottawa Tavern moved from West Bancroft??

Thank you again for a great tour!

The original on Bancroft burned in the 1990s, and reopened on Adams in 2008.
