Convergys software launched in Sri Lanka

CINCINNATI - Convergys Corp. said a Sri Lankan telecommunications company has implemented Convergys' main software product for its 1 million subscribers.

 

Sri Lanka Telecom is using the company's Infinys rating, billing and mediation software. The company's CEO, Shuhei Anan, said it expects to recoup the cost of the system within the first six months of operation. The implementation was the largest information technology project ever undertaken by Sri Lanka Telecom, Convergys said in a news release.

 

Convergys (NYSE: CVG), headquartered in Cincinnati, provides customer care, human resources and billing services worldwide.

Shareholders OK Convergys changes

But revisions to board need board OK

COVINGTON - A proposal calling for the repeal of the structure of Convergys Corp.'s board of directors was approved Tuesday by shareholders of the Cincinnati-based outsourcing firm.

 

The proposal calls for an end to Convergys' classified board of directors - in which a portion of thedirectors serve for different term lengths, depending on their classification - and replacement with an annually elected board.

 

The proposal, which is similar to those introduced to other major firms, including Procter & Gamble, still faces several hurdles.

Convergys shares rise on Q1 results

CINCINNATI - Convergys Corp. shares were at a three-year high this afternoon, following the release of the company’s first quarter results.

 

For the quarter ended March 31, the Cincinnati-based outsourcing firm posted $36.7 million in net income, an increase of 18 percent.

 

Quarterly earnings per share of 29 cents per share excluding stock-option costs beat expectations of analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial by four cents.

Convergys signs five-year deal with Taiwan firm

CINCINNATI - Convergys Corp. said Tuesday that it has signed a five-year professional services outsourcing contract with VIBO Telecom, a cellular company that is part of the Kinpro Group in Taiwan.

 

The amount of the deal was not disclosed. Under its terms, Convergys will handle VIBO's back-office operations, including its customer care and billing systems, using its Infinys software.

Strong Q3 for Convergys

Convergys Corp.’s third-quarter profits increased 7 percent to $45.2 million, or 32 cents per share, compared with $42.4 million, or 30 cents, in the same period in 2005. The results easily topped Wall Street’s earnings expectations of about 29 cents per share.

 

Revenues were up 9 percent to $703 million, a bit higher than the average of analysts’ estimates of $699 million, according to Thomson Financial Network.

Convergys call center to Texas

CINCINNATI - Cincinnati-based Convergys Corp. plans to bring a call center to Longview, Texas, that will employ up to 500 within a year of opening, the Longview News-Journal reported today.

 

The municipality offered the company a $600,000 grant and promised to create an enterprise zone, which could also lead to sales and use tax savings. The company told Longview authorities that it had considered building the center in India and the Philippines before settling on the Texas location.

Convergys to add jobs via new Erlanger site

CINCINNATI - Convergys Corp. has plans to open a new call-center site in Erlanger for its outsourced customer-care services business, the company said Tuesday.

 

No further details about the project are being released while the company is still in negotiations for the site, but it will create new jobs and none will be transferred from its operations in Cincinnati, said company spokesperson Lauri Roderick.

 

Convergys signed an agreement with the city of Cincinnati in 2003 under which it was eligible to receive more than $50 million in tax incentives and grants from the city in exchange for keeping its headquarters downtown and some 1,400 jobs in the city plus adding at least 225 new jobs by the end of 2006.

Convergys grows earnings 90% in 4Q

Convergys Corp. nearly doubled its fourth-quarter earnings, compared with the year-ago period, topping analysts' estimates for the quarter.

 

The Cincinnati-based company posted net income of $44.5 million, or 32 cents per share, up 90 percent from $23.4 million, or 16 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter. Analysts had expected 30 cents per share, on average.

 

Revenues were $720 million, an 8 percent increase over $670 million in fourth-quarter 2005. Analysts had predicted $713 million in revenues.

600 new jobs for Erlanger

Convergys Corp. says it is opening a customer services and technical support call center in Erlanger that it expects will create about 600 new jobs.

 

Hiring is already under way for the 85,000-square-foot facility. It will begin operations by the end of March and be fully staffed by fall, spokeswoman Lauri Roderick said today.

 

The Cincinnati-based provider of outsourced services is subleasing the site on Pacific Avenue from GE Information Technology Solutions through September 2009. It will include 400 work stations.

These seem like jobs that should be downtown...you know Convergys agreed to add more employees DOWNTOWN in their agreement with the city.  Once again the city bent over backwards to be 'business friendly' and how do they repay the city...by creating new jobs not in the city, county, or even state!!!  This is a bunk move!

^ I wish these jobs were downtown as well.  My husband and I were talking about this yesterday while we were walking to work.  He mentioned that the jobs Convergys promised were the higher salaried ones.  Many companies tend to place their call centers in Texas (or whereever they can find cheap labor), so it's good they at least stayed in this region.

 

Still, we have to wonder about the Convergys deal.  Convergys kicked some businesses out of the Atrium One when they purchased the building, all with help from the city.  :( 

Call center jobs are generally not the ones that go downtown - these are $25K jobs on average while the average salary at corporate is $80k, but this is a kick in the ass.  I am still pissed that they kicked out Cincinnati Bell (I think) who relocated many of those worker to Norwood, which is where Convergys pulled jobs from.  Overall a questionable investment, but the company does now own the building.  Considering that P&G, Kroger, 5/3, and Convergys own their real estate it is good because of the vested interest.  I know Great American owns some, and I think Federated might own their building as well.  At least it is 600 more jobs for the metro.

^Delta has a call center downtown...I just think it is a shafty move on Convergy's part.  I would love to see some middle class jobs in the CBD, thats what will make it a grand place..more middle class!

Convergys CEO steps down

CINCINNATI - James F. Orr, chairman and CEO of Convergys Corp., today announced he would retire at year's end.

 

The downtown Cincinnati-based customer care company's board named president David Doughtery as CEO effective at Convergy's annual meeting on April 17. Orr will remains as chairman until his retirement on Dec. 31.

 

In announcing his retirement, Orr said, “Convergys has just completed a year of record results in revenues and earnings per share and is well positioned for future success. The work done over the past two years to strengthen the company and enhance its operating performance is clearly producing positive results. We are fortunate to have an executive of Dave Dougherty's outstanding ability and extensive experience ready to assume the position of CEO."

Gosh....darnit!!!  Why does this company continue to torture me?!?!  Can you show any loyalty at all to your hometown??  You recently announce two new call centers; one in Texas the other in Kansas.  They aren't even in the same region of the country as Cincy, much less the same city.  What the hell....I would sure as heck like to hear Convergys anounce the creation of 600 new jobs in Cincy, but that will probably never happen.

CINCINNATI - Convergys Corp. is creating another call center in the United States, this one in Wichita, Kan.

 

Cincinnati-based Convergys is expected to create 600 jobs in the city. It is taking over space formerly occupied by catalog company Spiegel, which operated a call center there.

 

Local, county and state officials put together an incentive package for the company that includes forgivable loans and employee training investments.

How about "600 Jobs for Erlanger"  Im not a student of business and im not going to pretend that I know anything but it would seem to me that is makes sense for a company to diversify locations as well.  I would think the "dont put all your eggs in one basket" ideology would apply here as well.  I dont think call centers are the solution to a weak job market.  Certainly its good to add jobs no matter what and I wish convergys and other local companies would find ways to increase their downtown presence but i think we should hope for quality, not qantity.

It would be GREAT for these jobs to come to our region.  Much of the midwest is suffering from manufacturing jobs and the like leaving...but what is picking up the slack for middle-class America...the service sector??  I would much rather have call center jobs than jobs at Target or Fridays.

 

Convergys has already been skimping out on their agreement with the city.  They promised to keep a certain amount of jobs downtown and create new jobs.  This was in return for the subsidies that the city gave the company.

 

In terms of diversification...it doesn't matter in this case.  It is all about cost and it seems as though Convergys would rather save a couple bucks than give back to their hometown.  You go ahead and tell the people of Lower Price Hill, Norwood, Walnut Hills, College Hills, etc that these jobs are not needed/welcomed in our city.  Sure it would be nice to see Convergys add a couple hundred corporate jobs here, but that doesn't happen too often...it takes time to grow those positions.  These jobs are much more prevelant, and I for one would love to see these jobs come to cities like Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dayton, Cbus, Pitt, etc.  The midwest could use some of this lovin'

Target is supposed to have a good reputation when it comes to wages. Don't they pay like 10 dollars an hour?

I would find it VERY surprising if Target pays their employees $10 per hour.  I would also say that call center jobs pay more than min. wage.  Typically adults work those jobs, and use that money to support their family (albeit with another income usually).  Not to mention I would venture to say that benefits and the like are much better working for a company like Convergys, Delta, etc than Target, Fridays, and so on.

I am a people of Norwood and I am telling you that I dont want the city's economic growth to be built on call centers.  Yes wages are wages and any new jobs to the region are a good thing but if we are going to grow into an economy that is once again attractive to young, talented professionals, we need to aim a little higher.

I understand what you and others are saying, but I don't think that you can base an economy on high paying jobs alone.  You need that base of jobs for the middle-class.  That is what our country prides itself on...right??  Yes we should base our economy around attracting "yound, talented professionals", but we cannot forget about the large number of people here NOW that would appreciate some better job opportunities.

 

I'm sure some people would love the option of working in an office at a call center as opposed to doing crap work or no work at all.  I mentioned those neighborhoods because many of the people that live their were once able to get jobs at good middle-class job centers.  While we want to attract new, and continue with high quality economic growth...does not mean you can ignore those other types of jobs that make a job market diversified and functional for all members of society.

That's why they outsource jobs to small towns. Although I know Wichita isn't THAT small.

i have a friend that works at a call center in cincy, and i used to work at one too. . . these centers definetely do not pay enough to be considered "middle class employers. If anything, these places are worse than some other places. They have VERY few managers (who would make more money). I don’t think this is that large of a loss. Even people that work 40 hours a week . . .MIGHT make 18-20 a year...definetely not middle class

If you're referring to your job with that research place its not the same thing.  Avon had a MAJOR call center in at their main offices (much of those jobs now being shipped overseas).  Those jobs payed around 30k per year, plus had good health coverage, stock options, and retirement packages.

 

Plus you were hired on to do a job meant for a student...those jobs always pay much less (I'm sure you don't make anywhere near what the full-time people make at your current co-op).  And yes 30k a year with a combined income around 60-70k definitely fits the mold of middle class.

I'm not real sure why there are so many people disagreeing with me right now.  I don't know how any community can say that they are too good for any job(s).  Job growth is job growth...whether you want to believe it or not, call center jobs are not that bad.  They offer people another option than stocking vending machines, driving a cement truck, etc.  It gives people without an education (college degree and/or trade) an opportunity to work in a decent work environment.  Air conditioned, benefits, steady hours, decent pay, etc.

 

Not to mention these jobs take up Class A office space...is that a bad thing for a community??  I surely wouldn't want to see all new job growth and investment go into these types of jobs, but I never suggested that either.  Obviously every city would like to be NYC with corporate jobs coming out the wazzoo.  But the fact of the matter is, is that isn't the case...especially for the midwest!

 

I would love to see another suface lot or two be taken up for these type of jobs much like the Delta Call Center downtown near City Hall.  With the stagnant state of many midwestern cities, I just don't see how you can turn your back on any kind of jobs.  Especially when they are better than the service sector job growth that we have been seeing.

Convergys to open another U.S. call center

CINCINNATI - A new call center in Charlotte, N.C., will join several others that Convergys Corp. is opening this year.

 

The company said Thursday that it will hire about 400 people for the call center, which will open during the third quarter. Convergys has another center in Charlotte, and one each in Greenville and Jacksonville, N.C.

 

The center joins a 600-employee facility Convergys is opening during the third quarter in Wichita, Kan. (see cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2007/03/05/daily4.html).

Convergys CEO gets $10.7M

CINCINNATI - Jim Orr, Convergys Corp.'s departing chief executive and chairman, got $6.1 million in compensation in 2006 plus an additional cash award of up to $4.6 million that's subject to performance-based targets and won't be paid until later.

 

The Cincinnati-based provider of outsourced business services and billing software announced last month that Orr, 61, is retiring as CEO as of the company's April 17 annual shareholders meeting and will step down as chairman at the end of the year. He has been with the company since it was spun off by Cincinnati Bell in 1998 and was responsible for certain of its component business units prior to the spin-off.

 

Details of Orr's and other executives' 2006 compensation were disclosed in Convergys' proxy statement that was filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission this week.

Convergys inks $1B contract

CINCINNATI - A human resources contract with a unit of Johnson & Johnson Cos. will earn Convergys Corp. about $1 billion over its 10-year life.

 

Cincinnati-based Convergys said Tuesday it has signed an agreement with Johnson & Johnson Services Inc., part of New Brunswick, N.J.-based Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ). Under the contract, Convergys will provide a variety of unspecified human resources services to the health care company.

 

Convergys said in a news release that the contract is expected to have a "significant impact" on its earnings beginning in early 2009.

Convergys lands Starbucks as client

CINCINNATI - A new contract with the world's largest coffee retailer will add a jolt of caffeine to Convergys Corp.'s bottom line.

 

The Cincinnati-based company said it has signed a multiyear contract with Starbucks Coffee Co. for human resources services. The amount of the contract wasn't disclosed, but Convergys said in a news release it will "positively impact earnings and revenues beginning in 2009."

 

Under the terms of the contract, Convergys will provide human resource administration and payroll services to Starbucks outlets in the United States and Canada and benefits services to the Canadian sites.

Convergys signs $4.2M research deal

CINCINNATI - A Fortune 50 financial services firm signed up Convergys Corp. to provide customer intelligence, under an 18-month contract worth $4.2 million.

 

Convergys, in a news release, declined to identify the company. It said it will provide marketing research services that include: customer surveys, brand and image tracking, competitive marketplace research, customer retention research, decision sciences, analytics and reporting, among other services.

Convergys opening New Mexico call center

CINCINNATI - Convergys Corp. is continuing its U.S. call center expansion, opening its latest location in Las Cruces, N.M.

 

The company said it plans to employ about 500 at the new center, mostly customer service associates, according to a story in Customer Interaction Solutions magazine. It added that it is opening the center to handle increased business from an unnamed client in the wireless industry.

 

The Las Cruces facility is the second Convergys has opened in New Mexico in the past 12 months. Last January, it purchased the assets of America Online's call center in Albuquerque, hiring about 250, with plans to double employment over five years.

Convergys set to complete Intervoice buy

Convergys Corp. said Wednesday it has acquired about 89 percent of Intervoice Inc.’s outstanding shares, and will complete its acquisition of the technology company within a day.

I thought it was these guys who got a big break compliments of Cincy taxpayers several years back?  (Not implying that was a good or bad idea!)

I'm hoping that they move intervoice hq to Cincy..... That would be awesome. I doubt it would happen though...

To make them feel comfortable when they move, DT can build them a Dallas-inspired all glass skyscraper.

Convergys Corp. shareholders hope a potential spin-off of the firm’s billing unit could finally garner returns promised since its stock price began plummeting last July.

 

Downtown-based Convergys announced this week its plan to evaluate a separation of its lucrative information management unit from its customer care and human resource management divisions, forming a second publicly traded company. It hired New York financial adviser Centerview Partners to advise the board and senior management and help them make a decision by year’s end.

 

Convergys’ information management division employs 3,100 workers, including 500 locally. In all, Convergys has 2,200 workers in Greater Cincinnati. It is unclear how a spin-off would impact local employment.

Convergys acquires Ceon Corp. in California

Convergys Corp. said it has acquired business applications provider Ceon Corp., expanding an alliance it formed with the company in January. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

 

Ceon, based in Redwood City, Calif., provides product lifecycle management software. Founded in 1999, it also has offices in France and the United Kingdom.

 

Under the January agreement, the two companies formed an alliance to offer a comprehensive enterprise product management solution, beginning with the upgrade of Convergys’ Infinys Business Support System.

Convergys expands in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines — Cincinnati-based Convergys Corp. opened three additional facilities in the Philippines Thursday and plans to employ 4,000 more workers by the end of this year, its top official said.

 

Dave Dougherty, president and chief executive of Convergys, joined Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and other officials in ceremonies to inaugurate a new call center Thursday in a technology park in Laguna province near Manila.

 

Convergys opened another call center in suburban Quezon city and a third in Cebu city in the central Philippines also on Thursday.

Convergys may break up company

Top management at Convergys will continue to look at breaking up the company in 2009, its chief executive officer said today.

 

Spinning off the company’s struggling information management unit has been on the table for several months, but in January, CEO David Dougherty said the economic slowdown and turmoil in financial markets made it unlikely the company would split off the unit in the near-term.

 

But it will be on agenda for management and the board this year as the Cincinnati-based company looks for ways to boost the value of its share, Dougherty said at its annual shareholder meeting today.
