Posted January 29, 20232 yr What are Ohio's gay and lesbian neighborhoods? Husband and I live in Toledo's Old West End, the biggest gay neighborhood in the region, and it is said here at one time the largest gay neighborhood in Ohio. I'm familiar with the Short North in Columbus; Dayton has Jane Reece and...? When husband and I lived in Bowling Green, we got to know the local lesbian community - very few gay men in town; our mail carrier joked that the street we lived on was "Lesbian Lane", and counted up the couples for us. Cleveland may be trying to develop a gay neighborhood: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/28/dining/cleveland-restaurants-kitchens-gay-neighborhood.html What are other LGBTQ+ neighborhoods or streets in Ohio? Cincinnati? Akron? Other, small towns?
January 29, 20232 yr Lakewood has had that reputation in the Cleveland area for quite some time, I can't begin to say if some neighborhoods are more so than others. Edited January 29, 20232 yr by E Rocc

January 29, 20232 yr Ohio City and Detroit Shoreway are gsy friendly neighborhoods. Cleveland Heights is probably gay friendly too.
January 30, 20232 yr Other than the Short North in Columbus, German / Merion Village, Old Town East, and especially the southern half of Clintonville have large LGBT populations

At one time I believe more than 20 percent of the neighborhood population identified as LGBTQ. Not sure if that's still true.
January 30, 20232 yr I would second Edgewater. More so than present day Lakewood...although they do border each other. Two notable local joints include: Studio West 117: https://studiowest117.com/ Twist: https://www.twistsocialclub.com/ Although the LGBT Community Center is in Detroit-Shoreway: https://twitter.com/LGBTCleveland Edited January 30, 20232 yr by MuRrAy HiLL

I often lump Edgewater and Lakewood together as a gayborhood. Gold Coast and Edgewater are almost effectively one neighborhood.

Historically, sure, but McPherson Town has been the city's gayborhood since at least the 80's. Oregon District, St. Anne's Hill, and South Park have been pseudo-gayborhoods as well. Not to mention, ya know, Yellow Springs. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
January 30, 20232 yr german village for columbus historically. but not sure there are gayborhoods anymore in the old school sense. also, cleveland has that new multifauceted gay development, studio w117, so that's an interesting modern, err, twist.
January 30, 20232 yr Yeah former Columbus ones all have too many straights for that moniker to really apply anymore.
January 30, 20232 yr Lakewood, Edgewater, Detroit-Shoreway, Ohio City is what I'd think of off the jump in 2023. I've heard stories of the west edge of Ohio City that borders Detroit-Shoreway in the 80's being a true gayborhood and there's some history to back that up here: https://case.edu/ech/articles/g/gay-community

January 30, 20232 yr I would agree that Northside is the primary gayborhood for Cincinnati, but there is a fairly large LGBT population (by Ohio standards) in OTR now as well.
January 30, 20232 yr I think gayborhoods have diversified over the last 20+ years. Heck, back in the 70's and 80's we lived in gayborhoods somewhat by default, as half the buildings in the areas we lived in were empty!
January 31, 20232 yr Author Thanks for all the details on the 3Cs. I'll add that in Toledo, Downtown and Old Orchard are also pretty queer, but the Old West End is still the center of gay life in Toledo. How about other, and smaller cities? Akron? Dayton? Canton? Where is Lima's Christopher Street? Heck, even RedWhitenBlue Findlay has a pride picnic these days....

January 31, 20232 yr There's no gayborhood in Athens really. The whole town is very LGBTQ friendly. But the near east side probably has the largest population.
January 31, 20232 yr It's certainly different now, but wasn't the Cleveland Warehouse District in the 90s (even 80s?) a bit of a gay neighborhood?
