February 27, 20232 yr A History of Norfolk Southern Train Crash Reports Last October in Sandusky, a Norfolk Southern train derailed 21 cars and spilled 10,000 gallons of paraffin wax. In 2020, a Norfolk Southern conductor tried to pull out of a Rossville, Tennessee train yard while one car was still connected to an unloading tower. The accident released about 500 gallons of maelic anhydride — an irritant for the eyes and respiratory tract that’s useful in making resins. And in 2018, Norfolk Southern had an accident in Loudonville, Ohio. Sixteen cars came off the tracks. One car spilled more than 30,000 gallons of liquified petroleum gas. The other, according to the accident report, “released 200 pounds of environmentally hazardous substances, solid.” That last accident happened in February — five years to the day, in fact, before the Norfolk Southern derailment in East Palestine. March 5, 20232 yr Good lord, Norfolk Southern derailed ANOTHER train in Ohio, this time in Springfield. (Let’s not forget they also put trains on the ground in Sandusky and Steubenville in just the last few months.) When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?
March 5, 20232 yr Technically the fourth train (at least), but still funny to my dark sense of humor. When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

This may or may not be true. One example of available sensor technology that could potentially have prevented this derailment are axle accelerometers that would detect excessive wheel bearing vibration well before catastrophic failure. Then, there is the more obvious culprit in this specific EP accident that NS has set a ridiculously high temperature limit for the periodic hot boxes that would signal mandatory stoppage of the train. What else am I missing here @KJPand other UO posters that are experts in this subject?

March 15, 20232 yr Ohio Sues Norfolk Southern for Train Derailment Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost filed a civil lawsuit yesterday that seeks to hold railway company Norfolk Southern financially accountable for the derailment in East Palestine last month. Over one million gallons of hazardous chemicals were spilled as a result. “Ohio shouldn’t have to bear the tremendous financial burden of Norfolk Southern’s glaring negligence,” stated Yost. “The fallout from this highly preventable incident may continue for years to come, and there’s still so much we don’t know about the long-term effects on our air, water and soil.” More below: https://columbusunderground.com/ohio-sues-norfolk-southern-for-train-derailment-we1/ "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

April 10, 20241 yr Norfolk Southern agrees to $600M settlement in fiery Ohio derailment. Locals fear it’s not enough Norfolk Southern has agreed to pay $600 million in a class-action lawsuit settlement for a fiery February 2023 train derailment in Ohio, but residents worry the money not only won’t go far enough to cover future health needs that could be tremendous but also won’t amount to much once divvied up. “It’s not nowhere near my needs, let alone what the health effects are going to be five or 10 years down the road,” said Eric Cozza, who lived just three blocks from the derailment and had 47 family members living within a mile (1.61 kilometers). ... The settlement, which doesn’t include or constitute any admission of liability, wrongdoing or fault, represents only a small slice of the $3 billion in revenue Norfolk Southern generated just in the first three months of this year. The railroad said that even after the settlement it still made a $213 million profit in the quarter. May 29, 20241 yr Norfolk Southern Ordered to Pay $310 Million for East Palestine Derailment The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Justice reached a more than $310 million with Norfolk Southern Railway Company for last year’s East Palestine, Ohio train derailment. If the settlement is approved by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, Norfolk Southern would have to improve rail safety, pay for health monitoring and mental health services for the communities around East Palestine, fund long-term environmental monitoring and pay a $15 million civil penalty, among other actions to protect nearby waterways and drinking water resources. “No community should have to experience the trauma inflicted upon the residents of East Palestine,” EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan said in a statement. “Today’s enforcement action … ensures the cleanup is paid for by the company, and helps prevent another disaster like this from happening again. Because of this settlement, residents and first responders will have greater access to health services, trains will be safer and waterways will be cleaner.” More below: https://columbusunderground.com/norfolk-southern-ordered-to-pay-310-million-for-east-palestine-derailment-ocj1/ "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
