Episode of LeBron's UNINTERRUPTED 'The Shop' Filmed in Cleveland at Black Cat Barbershop Airs Tomorrow

By Vince Grzegorek on Thu, Apr 7, 2022 at 12:01 pm

The latest installment of LeBron's 'The Shop,' the second episode of season five, hits the air tomorrow on the UNINTERRUPTED YouTube channel. Clips from the trailer, which you can watch below, have already made their way through Twitter as LeBron, who will miss the playoffs this year, answers which future, current and past players he most wants to play with. (The answers, respectively: Bronny, of course; Steph Curry; and Scottie Pippen.)

As for the local news here, eagle-eyed local observers might have noticed familiar paraphrenelia on the barbershop set's walls.

The episode was filmed in Cleveland during NBA All-Star weekend at Black Cat Barbershop in Detroit-Shoreway.

If by “Russian Embassy” you mean the Kazakh Presidential Palace then yes, yes I did 😉

And the interiors for those scenes were filmed at the Cuyahoga County courthouse downtown.

I was there for the filming! We were all standing around the main CWRU library (behind and to the left from this angle). We were there for hours in anticipation of some massive fight scene and big explosions. When it finally happened, it looked like maybe a bbq grill exploding - very underwhelming for as long as we’d been standing around in the middle of the night. It was still an interesting experience.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

‘Blade’ filming in Cleveland delayed after director leaves Marvel project

Updated: Sep. 29, 2022

By Joey Morona, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Marvel still intends to film part of “Blade” in Cleveland, just not when the studio originally planned. The news is a result of director Bassam Tariq’s abrupt exit from the project.

***

As it stands, “Blade” is slated to be the 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, sandwiched between “The Marvels” (July 28, 2023) and “Captain America: New World Order” (May 3, 2024).

Q&A: Baumbach finds a cinematic playground in ‘White Noise’

By LINDSEY BAHR

.....

AP: A lot of filmmakers and showrunners set their pandemic films in warm vacation spots like Greece and Sicily and Hawaii and you went to Cleveland in November.

BAUMBACH: It seems like a lot of people went back to their childhoods too. But I had already done that. I really was just following the novel and the logic of the script and not thinking as much about what it all would entail.

Ohio offered the most exciting possibilities. But it was a lot to fling myself into after a lot of time indoors, like now we’re going to be in Ohio for six months and I’ve got to put a car in a creek and build a Boy Scout camp. But I liked working in Ohio and the community there.

People were excited about the movie and being in the movie and I used a lot of real families. I liked that there was a kind of enthusiasm that in my years of shooting in New York City I’ve watched dwindle. It used to be if I came back to Brooklyn to shoot, people would get excited. Now nobody’s excited.

A good interview by Crain's Dan Polletta with Bill Garvey of the Cleveland Film Commission, it explains where the state incentive money goes, how important it is, and what a good place Cleveland is for making movies.  So far five are slated for 2023 including a "blockbuster" in the fall.

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

  • 2 months later...

For a while we had some big films being filmed here ( the first Avengers movie as an example) but now it seems like there's no longer any news of Hollywood making anything. And arguably it might be too late since the state of Georgia has grown into a "Goto" hub for film making.

I thought once the IX center went up for sale someone would turn it into a studio but that didn't happen. I mean if nothing else we could use the talent we already HAVE in the area and do a few small-scale projects (both films and TV pilots) and see if we get a nibble from some of the many streamers out there like HBO and such. Or we might consider starting out own streamer (and then after we are up and running lease our projects to the other streamers)

We all know we have enough talent (film crews and actors) and we have plenty of resources (wood/clothing/etc) and we certainly have a variety of locations much of which are just half an hour from each other.

I think the only negative thing we need to work on is a lack of hotel space as well as cluster of buildings we can repurpose into film studios.

Or is this just not do-able either because of apathy or politics or its just flat out too late because Georgia got there first. I don't know all the ins and outs of the Cleveland elite and the political power structure but i think there's a good opportunity to have a film industry grow here that would benefit not only the local creative community but also provide taxes to the city. So, I'm a big film fan and curious why our film community has grown stagnant. And if it isn't stagnant I'm sorry but my only source of news is what I see from the local news on new Hollywood film projects.

And yes, the Public Square area is great but it would be nice to see a film community grow ( larger than it is)

Probably because nobody has put up the money for such a venture. it would be the only studio in the state wherever it is built and would certainly be a booster for talent in those cities that have one, but the bigger question is if the ROI is sufficient enough to build it.

Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque director John Ewing announces retirement

Story HERE

By: Joey Morona, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque is one of the city’s great cultural treasures. Nowhere else can you see “Thelma & Louise” in dazzling 4K and Billy Wilder’s “The Spirit of St. Louis” in its original 35mm format one week, and then Wes Anderson’s underappreciated “Asteroid City” and the Cleveland premiere of “The Beasts,” the 2023 Best Picture winner at Spain’s Goya Awards, the next week

For nearly four decades, John Ewing has been the driving force behind the Cinematheque. But this will be his last full year as its director. On Friday, Ewing announced his retirement effective June 30, 2024.

“It’s something I wrestled with,” he told cleveland.com. “I actually thought I might do it in June of this year, but it didn’t quite feel right. The Cinematheque was still trying to rebound from the pandemic. But our numbers are back up. We’re pretty close to pre-pandemic levels. So, I feel like I’m leaving at a pretty good time when the organization isn’t limping.”

Ewing, 72, said health considerations played a role in the decision, too. He would also like to spend more time with his two young grandchildren, who recently moved to the area.

“There are other things I can be doing,” he said. “But it’s hard. It’s like I’ve raised a child, which is now age 37. It’s time to see if they can walk on their own.”

Why is the Film sector important?

The film industry is a major economic driver, creating jobs for thousands of people and generating billions of dollars in revenue each year. Physical production touches numerous industries, including tourism, food and beverage, and accommodations.

When a film or TV set shoots on location, it generates jobs, revenue and infrastructure development. Physical production can create a ripple effect on job creation and innovation in other industries and can also boost tourism.

Film and TV content tends to be in high demand even during economic downturns – during the pandemic, for example, the industry was one of the fastest to recover. Indeed, the film industry experienced growth over pre-pandemic levelsand provided employment to many people from the live entertainment industry (concerts and festivals, for example) who struggled to find work.

When we talk about Cleveland's economic future there are always a few possibilities we think we can develop. Film production doesn't usually come up and it's also out of our control because the necessary tax credits are state driven. Still...that industry has the ability to be an important economic generator if we would only see it's value.

It not completely out of Cleveland's control. STATE tax credits yes, but city credits are city controlled, plus other incentives that the city can give are city-based. Someone has to tell the mayor's office!

Just a random thought I have had on the film industry in Ohio, but to me the best idea would be for all the Cs to work together and with Athens and Toledo. Have the main studios mostly in central Ohio and then work collaboratively with each city to have on site locations for filming in a more dense city feeling. Athens could be the mountainous area and Toledo/northwest Ohio could be rural farm land filming.

Obviously it would be hard and a ton of work to have all the cities work together, but could be a huge benefit to the film industry in Ohio.

I get the benefit of being centrally located, but I actually think Cleveland is the better location for the main studio. Given our theater district we have a lot of people already trained in set design and construction, makeup artists, sound engineers, light technicians, ect. I think Cleveland would more easily be able to fill the job openings for a movie production than some of the cities.

City Council to OK money for Greater Cleveland Film Commission as regional economic driver

Published: Oct. 30, 2023

By Courtney Astolfi, cleveland.com

"CLEVELAND, Ohio – City Council is poised to approve $250,000 for the Greater Cleveland Film Commission, which is preparing for a busy 2024 after convincing state lawmakers to juice Ohio’s film industry with millions more in tax credits.

City leaders see the money as a way to further economic opportunities for Clevelanders, by working on films directly, or providing other local services that film crews rely on. The commission sells Cleveland to studio executives as a location where they ought to film. The commission also coordinates work once Cleveland is chosen as a filming destination, by scouting locations, finding production offices, and other similar tasks.

Cleveland taxpayers have supported the commission’s operations since 2009, and in that time, it’s helped create 6,000 jobs and driven over $1.2 billion in spending to the region, Economic Development Director Tom McNair said at a Monday meeting."

CLEVELAND — Cleveland has seen its fair share of movies shot in the city over the years. Big-time films, including "White Boy Rick," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Judas and The Black Messiah" and "The Avengers," found something special about the area.

Cameras are rolling again in the Slavic Village neighborhood for the film "Stickshift." According to local casting director Lillian Pyles, the plot is about a reformed getaway driver getting pulled back in for one last job to save the life of her always-in-trouble ex, who is indebted to their former boss.

Is there a thing called "Lorain Plaza" -- not a strip mall in Lorain, but some nice office, office lobby, or hotel type place?  I was just watching House of Cards--Season 5, Episode 7-(5:55)-and there's a scene where Mark Usher and Conway's wife are talking in the lobby of some building and in the background is a sign, after their conversation, the sign can be fully seen in focus and it says:

Lorain Plaza

Cleveland

with a logo above the "Lorain Plaza"

I didn't recognize the logo or the place.  Is it a fake place trying to make it look like they're in Cleveland? That would make sense, but I think they're supposed to be in Washington--there was no mention that they were going to Cleveland for something in the show and the previous scene with Mark Usher was at the White House.

Much speculation about whether Headlands Beach will be a location for the new Superman movie. Personally I would like to see a remake of Beach Blanket Bingo, 59 years after the original. While sadly Annette Funicello is no longer with us, 83-year old co-star Frankie Avalon is very much alive! 🏖️

Wonder why it would have to be a big secret.  When Spider-Man 3, The Avengers, and Winter Soldier all filmed in Cleveland, they were each a big, publicly known deal.  Not to mention scores of smaller films that shot here and never got all hush, hush.
