September 9, 200717 yr Hi, new here. Searching around the internet for this very subject. Don't know if anyone's mentioned the horrible movie "Double Dragon". There's a chase/fight scene or something (I can't remember the stupid thing), but what I remember clear as day is that it takes place inside Tower City. I know this because one shot clearly shows the fountain I used to meet my high school sweetheart all the time. Ah, memories. Anyway I was hoping for a list. Coming in basically 3 parts: movies that purposefully make verbal/visual reference to Cleveland/surrounding areas or Cleveland landmarks, movies purposefully take place in Cleveland/surrounding areas, movies that were filmed fully or partially in Cleveland/surrounding areas (not always intending Cleveland as a setting or even to reference Cleveland, but simply because the filmmakers liked a certain spot or landmark). If someone has this list that'd be cool. But I'll be looking through this thread anyway and maybe make a list of my own. Also... tv shows. Will Smith's main steady girlfriend came from Cleveland, and referrences kept poppin up quite frequently with that.
September 9, 200717 yr I haven't seen such a list, so it looks like you've given yourself an assignment. And welcome to the board!
September 9, 200717 yr welcome arthereld --i happen to love double dragon. its a guilty pleasure. it also stars clevelander robert patrick, better known from terminator 2. i believe the director is a clevelander as well, not sure tho. with those types of connections a lot of it was filmed in cleveland, although in the movie cle was just a stand-in for los angeles. probably my fav cleveland-based movie was stranger than paradise, made by clevelander and ny 80's icon jim jarmusch -- nothing like a shot of a fogged out e9th st pier.
September 9, 200717 yr This will be a good start, the IMDB has more than 200 movies TV shows filmed in Cleveland: http://us.imdb.com/List?endings=on&&locations=Cleveland,+Ohio,+USA

September 12, 200717 yr Has anyone else heard about this? Surprised I haven't yet ... It looks really good. Scheduled to arrive at Shaker Square Cinemas on September 19th. The Real Low Calorie Diet Did you know that it takes on average 10 calories of fossil-fuel energy to provide one calorie of food for our plates? Real Low Calorie Diet captures a movement across Northeast Ohio to change the way we eat. The movement, quite simply, is to eat food that is grown locally, whether on a vacant lot in the city of a fifth generation family farm in the country. As the film reveals through interviews, animation, and beautiful footage from the City of Cleveland, Oberlin, and the Northeast Ohio countryside, the simple act of eating local honors our land, our communities, and our rich natural heritage. The film captures the diversity of this movement and makes connections between the future of our food and the future of our democracy. It documents the impacts of programs such as City Fresh which link farmers and urban growers to consumers right in the city. Mostly, the film provides a message of hope in a media dominated by stories of war, catastrophic climate change, and loss of community. The film proves the critical hypothesis that the solutions to many of these critical challenges are already being developed through innovations at the grassroots level where the real hope for our democracy lies. Watch the trailer at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiOM6ome5H4.
September 12, 200717 yr Huh, I hadn't heard a peep about this -- thank you, I'll definitely be checking it out. I hope they address the scalability issues as well as challenges for providing year round local food given the climate changes.
November 12, 200717 yr CLEVELAND - NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams will broadcast live from downtown Cleveland Monday, November 12th. http://www.wkyc.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=77823
November 12, 200717 yr ^ ya beat me to it! i just saw that as here in ny brian williams joins the local ny news before his national broadcast and i was surprized to immediately see he was standing in front of the cleveland skyline. they are focusing on the cleveland clinic and brian williams even said, "guys i wonder how many ny'ers may consider moving here and working for the world famous cleveland clinic after they hear about what they do for their employees. its interesting." looking over the nbc website i see he has a blog and it turns out he spent time in the cleve as a kid and check out his great funny anecdote!: Nightly from Cleveland Posted: Monday, November 12, 2007 3:44 PM by Sam Singal By Brian Williams, Anchor and managing editor I used to think Cleveland was a summer resort. It's easy to think that when you are 9 years old and your parents put you on a Greyhound bus in Elmira, New York, and you arrive in this big city a few hours later, still clutching your favorite book on Hank Aaron. My sister lived here while my brother-in-law managed the cafeteria at Case Western Reserve. They were starting a family, living in a tiny Euclid Avenue apartment on very little money -- and I thought it was the Riviera. I used to walk to the Kroger food store to read the car magazines and spend an hour in air conditioning. We'd go to an amusement park on summer evenings, and life was great. In the 40 years since, it's safe to say Cleveland has changed and so have I. ...... http://dailynightly.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/11/12/462996.aspx
November 12, 200717 yr Downtown Cleveland looks real good as a backdrop for Brian Williams - except for the rain dripping off the edge of the canopy they have set up to protect him from the heavy rain (doh!).
November 13, 200717 yr This picture certainly doesn't do it justice. It looked great in HD and like Peabody said it almost looked fake. Video: http://www.wkyc.com/video/player.aspx?aid=47902&sid=77875&bw= http://www.wkyc.com/video/player.aspx?aid=47922&bw= CLEVELAND -- Brian Williams and the 'NBC Nightly News' crews took their show on the road. They spent Veterans' Day 2007 in Cleveland touching on many hot button issues that Clevelanders have been dealing with this year: Foreclosures, Health, and Jobs. Channel 3's Romona Robinson had a chance to visit with Brian Williams Monday afternoon.
November 14, 200717 yr This struck me a bit from his interview with Robinson -- a pretty solid answer from a question from an emailer about improving the state of the city: "I think, if you could just see the image that Cleveland enjoys, outside of Cleveland. A lot of it comes from - especially, I'm a 48 year old male - You often think of cities in terms of their sports teams. And the image that the networks portray at the top of those games, whether it's the Browns, Indians, Cavaliers, is the beautiful skyline, and kind of happening Cleveland, Ohio. And all those stories over the last 10 years, Cleveland and Pittsburgh both -- about livability, about the downtown. Someone did a very effective job selling the story of this great city. But with everything, it starts at the grass roots. It starts by making people proud of themselves, giving people an investment in their own lives. Trying to snuff out a defeatist attitude which is so cancerous in our society. A lot of that involves peer pressure, it involves sending a message that success really is okay; you needn't be embarrassed by it, you needn't worry that by getting ahead you're going to be different. I think communities have to change at the amoeba level; at the very granular basis of the city itself, and that gets -- that takes two generations, usually. It gets in the water system and it comes on up. Otherwise it's all a matter of policing. Otherwise, anyone can can do that. Anyone can cruise the streets of Cleveland in a police cruiser at night trying to break up gangs of kids where you see them, that way. You're just going to chase the problem one neighborhood away."
November 16, 200717 yr The Cleve got another shout out on 30 Rock last night, you had to have a quick ear but it was definitely there.
November 16, 200717 yr The Cleve got another shout out on 30 Rock last night, you had to have a quick ear but it was definitely there. what was the gist of the 'shout out'?
November 16, 200717 yr A muslim immigrant that wanted to get on The Amazing Race (and whom Tina Fey subsequently got tortured by Homeland Security) was describing all the exotic places that he had traveled to ending with . . . . "The Cleve".

January 8, 200817 yr The one I'm really excited about is "Three Days of Rain": Six Anton Chekhov short stories set in modern day Cleveland during a three day rain storm. http://www.threedaysofrain.com/ So I was strolling through Borders the other day and happened across ONE remaining copy of Three Days of Rain, which was apparently finally released on DVD. Since I've been looking for it for over a year, it goes without saying that I jumped on it. Overall, it was decent. A little dark and dreary (what with the, you know, three days of rain), but some interesting storylines. It had some nice shots of Cleveland and was definitely Cleveland-oriented, but very little of it was actually shot here. Most was shot in LA and Long Beach ... I guess payback was in order for Mortal Kombat. Worth checking out ... it's definitely not a love note to Cleveland like the Oh in Ohio or 30Rock, but it isn't exactly a Welcome to Collinwood, either.
February 11, 200817 yr It looks like the below is an opening trailer for an indie to be shown at the film fest this March. There is a little cleve thing going on at the end, and I know the filmaker is from Cleveland...I wonder if a lot was filmed here. Anyone know anything? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrCBziXs3S4&feature=related
February 11, 200817 yr Looks like almost all, if not all, was shot in the Cleveland area. Any idea as to the title of the film? Looks beautifully shot, though. Great photography.
February 11, 200817 yr It is called "unspeakable". The Writer & Director Marquette Williams. He is from Cleveland. I saw a documentary he did a couple years ago and really thought is was pretty good.

March 5, 200817 yr I'm sad she was eliminated, this girl is gorgeous. I'm sure an agency will pick her up. Great body and very editorial. Eliminated 'Make Me a Supermodel' contestant Jacki Hydock happy to be home Posted by dpolveri March 04, 2008 10:43AM Chris Stephens/The Plain DealerJacki Hydock. PEOPLE IN STYLE Model Jacki Hydock of North Olmsted, who was eliminated last week from Bravo's "Make Me a Supermodel," enjoyed her time spent on the reality show -- but nothing beats being at home. "I'm back to a real life!" says Hydock, who returned to Cleveland on Friday. "It was so hard not having contact with the world. You can't talk to family, friends. You can't watch TV -- you're really in a vacuum." .......
March 5, 200817 yr She was TOTALLY robbed and that show has BY FAR the worst editing I've ever seen. Say what you want about Tyra-nasaurus and Top Model but at least each contestant gets their appropriate time at judging. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

Say what you want about Tyra-nasaurus and Top Model but at least each contestant gets their appropriate time at judging. OOOOOhhhh MayDay, not you dissin' my girl Tyra! Although, I am going to use that name! LOL As far as editing and content. The show is very bad compared to the reality shows we partner with.
March 5, 200817 yr I agree they portrayed her really poorly, although I have to say I'm pulling for Shannon so I'm not sorry to see her go. ANTM is definitely a better show over all. The judges on Make Me A Supermodel are really bad (especially Tyson, does he really have to pretend to be such a hard ass? You're a male model dude) and the format/editing is just horrible. Oh, and I don't think this is exactly what was in mind for this thread but I thought it was funny (technically off-topic): "Cleveland" on map as "Family Guy" spin-off .
March 5, 200817 yr ^Very interesting, and I don't know if that would be off-topic, as Cleveland Brown is named after the city of Cleveland (and the football team in particular).

March 11, 200817 yr I know this is probably the wrong place to post this, but I just saw a news report about Madonna and John Melloncamp, among others, being inducted into the Rock and Roll HOF, but the ceremony took place in New York. Has there ever been any discussion of trying to get the induction ceremonies moved to Cleveland to actually be in the Rock Hall? That would be such a cool annual event and would really boost perceptions of the city.
