^ I watched and really enjoyed it.  The story was told very well, and the interviews were great.  The city and its people were really painted in a very positive light.

Did anyone else think that the Parma West Creek story seemed a little out of place?  It was a very inspiring case of grassroots action, but didn't seem to be incredibly pertinent in the overall scheme of things.  I also thought it was strange that there was little emphasis on the cultivation of the river for recreation.  I don't recall the Towpath ever being mentioned.

The dvd is supposed to be available for purchase on the PBS website, if anyone is interested.

I agree on all points. No mention of the Towpath and no mention of the return of wildlife (except fish). They showed birds (such as the egret at the beginning) throughout but didn’t mention that a lot of the birds returned only in recent history. They should have mentioned this, including eagles nesting for the first time in 70 years in Cuyahoga National Park. This is after all part of the “return” of the Cuyahoga.

The Parma West Creek story is relevent because it drians into the river. However, they spent too much time on it. Overall though it was very well done. I was happy to see it was in HD as some of the photography was just amazing.

Oh, and btw, Steve Litt?  :wtf:

Overall I think it was very educational and well produced.

They did have one cutaway of someone jogging on the towpath, but they should've gone into that more.

Also, I wish they had some more shots of the mouth of the river where it empties into the Lake. In all there were very few shots of Lake Erie, neglecting the awesome viewpoint of the city/river from the open water.

I still give it an A and a copy of the dvd belongs in every school in America.

I had searched my Dish Network a couple weeks ago hoping that PBS was going to show "Return of the Cuyahoga" out here in LA, but came up empty.  Yesterday, on a whim, I looked again and it just happened to be playing last night.  Got a chance to see it and will share it with my friends out here who have never been east of Nevada.  I found the program to be homesick inducing.  I especially hope they can bring aquatic life to the currently dead parts of the lower river.  I wonder if this consideration is at all a part of the East Bank renovation?

"I especially hope they can bring aquatic life to the currently dead parts of the lower river.  I wonder if this consideration is at all a part of the East Bank renovation?"

I hope so too. There are a lot of up front costs involved, but in the big picture a more natural bulkhead would be a much better investment.

From GreenCityBlueLake:

"In the new paradigm, industry restores the balance between human civilization and natural systems like the Cuyahoga River corridor. Nonprofit groups like CLEERTEC and CVI are laying the groundwork by looking at environmental restoration as business opportunity.

They recently launched their first project—to develop a ‘green bulkhead’—with a $1.8 million federal grant. The idea is to replace the aging steel bulkheads along the river’s shipping channel with ones made from more natural materials. The goal is reduce storm water with polluted sediments from flooding into the river, and to create a more inviting environment for both visitors and aquatic life."

'American Idol' looks to Rock Hall for theme of next show

by John Soeder/Plain Dealer Pop Music Critic

Thursday May 01, 2008, 2:14 PM

Next week's "American Idol" shows will have a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame theme. The final contestants - Syesha Mercado, David Cook, Jason Castro and David Archuleta - will sing tunes from the Rock Hall's list of 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll, showcased in a permanent exhibit at the museum in Cleveland.

Cleveland got a number of shout outs in last week's 30 Rock.  Some were done at the city's expense, but it was pretty funny still

Such as?

I was watching CBS and they had a spot light on Case's womens indoor track team.

The producers of "my houses is worth" want to visit my parents.

That was an old episode from last season. It was awesome, and created the line "Flee to the Cleve."

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

KJP, there is definitely no mention of "Flee to the Cleve."  This is a new episode...mostly jokes relating to Cleveland.  If you have time, watch the link.

Really? A new episode sounds cool. I'll check it out.

"I'll move to Cleveland when you get that IKEA -- never!!!"

Hilarious!

mostly jokes relating to Cleveland.

And Detroit...

...In todays news a tornado hit downtown Detroit putting out several fires around the city...

WFMJ channel 21 in Youngstown is doing a segment tomorrow night promoting University Circle and Little Italy. If they post the video on their website I will post the link.

My parents have a good chance to be on HGTV.  My mom charmed them.

I heard a rumor that the Family Guy spinoff about Cleveland Brown will...take place in Cleveland!!!

Now THAT would be awesome:)

It could be awesome or just one long, 13 week joke about Cleveland. The city, I mean.

I heard a rumor that the Family Guy spinoff about Cleveland Brown will...take place in Cleveland!!!

Now THAT would be awesome:)

The teaser says: "FAMILY GUY's Cleveland Brown moves to Stoolbend, VA, to make good on a promise to his high school sweetheart."  So it looks like it was merely a rumor.

However, The official name is apparently the 'The Cleveland Show'! haha

damnit:(

This is not quite on topic but close.  So I was reading some comics/graphic novels a few days ago at Barnes and Noble due to the awesomeness of the Iron Man movie, and I found a few sweet Cleveland references that bear mentioning.

If you read the graphic novel New Avengers/Collective, the Avengers are fighting a very powerful being in Cleveland in a lengthy battle.  They focus mostly on the North Coast District (you can see the Lake, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, etc) but are also appear to be fighting/destroying the Financial District.  Pretty cool seeing Cleveland in a comic, and the art did the city justice.

I also read this other comic called Outsiders: Five of a Kind.  Batman sent Wonder Woman and some other hero named Grace to Cleveland and Cleveland Heights to battle some villain.  There were some scenes with the two walking in a generic Cleveland Heights neighborhood neighborhood, riding the RTA, and fighting in the Federal Court House.  Some other Cleveland buildings were shown, though I can't remember.

I should have read some American Splendor trades to make it 3 for 3!

On an even more offtopic note, does anyone realize that Cleveland is the location for three incredibly popular comics - Calvin and Hobbes (Chagrin Falls), Crankshaft (Euclid), and Funky Winkerbeam (Euclid).  That's so cool!

Not that I loved the comic, but the Ziggy author lives/lived in Lakewood.

And don't forget Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes) is from Chagrin and still lives there.

Does that popcorn stand look familiar?

Calvin and Hobbes is the shizz. My favorite comic strip of all time.

Another Cleveland native is Brian Bendis, who is a huge writer for Marvel.  Think he lives elsewhere now.

Cleveland rocks in new movie 'The Rocker'

by Clint O'Connor/Plain Dealer Film Critic

Saturday June 07, 2008, 11:23 AM

Cleveland will get some nice face time on movie screens later this summer thanks to "The Rocker."

The new comedy starring "The Office's" Rainn Wilson, hits theaters Aug. 1. Wilson plays Robert "Fish" Fishman, music-mad drummer of an '80s hair-metal band, who gets booted from the group just before they hit it big. Twenty years later, living in Cleveland, the still-bitter Fish joins his nephew's band, A.D.D., to seek his rock 'n' roll revenge.

thats great to see the clev in modern graphic novels, good catch on those -- i'll look for them.

speaking of comic book people, tony isabella is a clevelander who was all over the classic silver age era of both marvel & dc comics.

finally watched "Return of the Cuyahoga."  It was a great film... both informative and inspiring.  Great stuff if you live in or love Cleveland... or if you care at all about cities and the environment!

Dont forget Tom Batiuk (Funky Winkerbean) lives in Medina County, and Brian Keller Vaughan (series Y: The Last Man), and Tony Strobl was from Cleve. (Donald Duck, contributions to Superman) etc..

I saw the movie "Leatherheads" (George Clooney and Renée Zellweger) last night.  I noticed a couple of Cleveland references:

First, during the first scene where the Duluth football team is on a train, there is this poster of Cleveland visible in the background:

VA-0000-1415.jpg

(From http://www.enjoyart.com/single_posters/trains/union-cleve.htm)

It was cool to see, even though the movie takes place in 1925 and the Terminal Tower wasn't completed until 1930 (when this poster was done...)

Second, the Duluth Bulldogs play a fictional Cleveland football team (I forget the name.)

Also, Akron was mentioned two or three times, and Toledo was mentioned once or twice.

Good eye Confiteordeo I'm so glad someone else noticed that.  There were a lot of "errors" in this film.  ugh.

NBC news has a new backdrop when interviewing doctors from the Clinic.

hardly surprizing but al roker gave the cleve another pick city shout out on the today show this morning.

^ I liked the movie too, in particular the somewhat negative Cleveland referencees

I don't know if anybody saw it, but on "Ask This Old House"  they helped a homeowner in the Buckeye neighborhood.  This isn't such a big deal, but they did a little Cleveland Rocks vignette to introduce the clip.  It was actually really cool to see them talking up Cleveland.  I don't think in all the episodes I've seen that they said anything about the place that they were going to visit, but this was like a 30 second clip with footage of the Plumbing contractor visiting Cleveland landmarks.... including my fav Steve's Lunch.  Why does it seem that place gets so much press?

it's a repeat from 2007.

The house is within spitting distance of Woodland Hills Park.

It's on a really nice street, in a neighborhood that "supposedly" has been ravaged by the mortgage problem.

I can proudly say, that Cleveland is one of TOH's featured and favorite cities.

i love that photo. So much so that i have it framed in my living room.

Ha!  I have that thing framed too (though sitting in a box with most of my other wall art).

.... including my fav Steve's Lunch.  Why does it seem that place gets so much press?

I don't know where to begin, but it has to be one of the grittiest little placest in the country.  Whenever friends that have moved out of town come back, Steve's is always on their list after a night at the bars.  Seeing "HOT DOGS" in red neon at 3:30am is quite a sight.

Has anyone seen the Lebron vitaminwater drink commercial where is he is a lawyer?  There is a scene outside the "courthouse" that looks like it is filmed in front of the old court house on Lakeside...Anyone else see this or am I crazy?

It's in rotation and I think there are at total of three clips depending on the buy.

Oates, Mustache Make Cartoon Crime-Fighting Team

John Oates may be coming to a cartoon near you.

June 27, 2008 , 11:15 AM ET

Kamau High, N.Y.

John Oates wants people to know that he is nothing like what he was when he had a mustache. The Hall & Oates principal is firm about the distinction, because if things go as planned, his mustachioed image could appear on TV in cartoon form kicking ass, rocking out and wearing tight pink pants.

Independent publisher Primary Wave Music Publishing, which owns a majority stake in most of the biggest hits in the Hall & Oates catalog, is shopping a cartoon titled "J-Stache" that further illustrates the dichotomy. As laid out in a two-minute trailer, Oates is portrayed as a modern-day family man and finds himself enticed back to the rock star life by his mustache, which is voiced by comedian Dave Attell.

I remember when he used to work at Super City Comics in the Old Arcade. I sure miss that place.

He's won something like 4 or 5 Eisner Awards and the Cleveland Press "Excellence in Journalism" Award in 2000.

He also has a good graphic novel he co-wrote called Torso - about the torso murders and staring one of Cleveland's favorite "real" crime fighters, Elliott Ness.

One of the Project Ranway contestants is from Cleveland.

Suede started his fashion career as an intern at Geoffrey Beene and decided to pursue a career in sportswear. He has launched denim-based collections, but has a passion for couture, eveningwear, and specialty apparel. Suede believes that this wide variety of style makes him a multi-talented designer. He describes himself as edgy, captivating and alternative. Madonna has been Suede's biggest fashion influence -- he finds that her ability to explore so many styles and cultures is a great inspiration. He thinks that layering, experimenting, and leaving things to the imagination are all fashion musts.

Lets hope he's not the first voted off.
