The project is based on the life of mobster Danny Greene (Stevenson), who lorded over Cleveland's criminal underworld during the late 1970s.

Shooting kicks off in just over a week in Detroit.

Man too bad they couldn't do some filming in Collinwood or Little Italy where some of this history occured.

If anyone is unfamiliar with the story...he's a decent run down from wiki:

Detroit? WTF.  Where is our budding film industry when we need it?

Yeah! What the f is up with that?!?

I mean, f*cking Detroit?  Detroit?  Seriously?  Detroit is a better place to shoot than Cleveland?  I would love to know how this decision was made.  Surely they had to at least CONSIDER coming here to shoot.

The stupid Medical Mart killed it.  Actually members of MMPI took out all of the film industy leaders Danny Green style, ala car bombs.  Man, the Plain Dealer was right!

I mean, is this story set in Detroit??

Maybe Cleveland's just not gritty enough? :-D

Well, there are at LOT of movies that are partly or completely set in Cleveland that don't shoot here, or barely shoot here, maybe just getting exteriors, and there are a variety of reasons for that, the reasons are different for each film.  However, giving film companies negative experiences here (such as what happened with the O in Ohio) doesn't help our case for future film companies scouting locations.  I can't imagine the cost is significantly less in Detroit, so it has to be regulations and permit-related or tax-related.

uuummmmm... michigan has film tax credits.  Ohio does not. end of story.

I figured it was something like that.  GOD I wish someone would pay attention and fix this!

However, giving film companies negative experiences here (such as what happened with the O in Ohio) doesn't help our case for future film companies scouting locations.

Can you elaborate on this?  I hadn't heard that there were negative experiences re: O in OHio.

I too am very interested to hear this "negative" experience.  Please elaborate.

I will look for an article about it.  Basically they were kicked out of the school they were shooting at because the school realized that "O" stood for orgasm and they thought it was improper.

Yes its all about the tax credits.  Ohio has dragged their feet on this.

We are also about to lose the "Torsoe" movie to Detroit, wqhich will have Matt Damon playing Eliot Ness..

Torso has gone back into development hell, it may never get made.

I cannot find any articles on what exactly happened with O in Ohio, all I can tell you is that we came off like a bunch of prudes and what I heard from my friends in the industry is that it was embarrassing for us because we gave permission and then took it away and kicked them out.

Really, I don't recall their being any problems.

Other than that I heard it was a positive experience for them shooting here, even though the film tanked, but I definitely remember something about them being given permission to shoot at a school and then that permission was revoked when they found out the movie was about an orgasm.

I dont remember hearing anything negative and I would have heard something negative.

The film has made money, just not as much as projected domestically.  DVD sales/rentals are still strong.

I remember that they were not allowed to film at a school.  I think Heights High was involved somehow (either the school they filmed at or were not allowed to film at).  Either way, I think the school they ended up filming at would only let them get interior shots of the school, no exteriors.

TNT visiting:

As part of their coverage of the Eastern Conference finals, TNT will be bringing its popular "Inside the NBA" show to The Q to do live shows before, at halftime and after all games played here. That means host Ernie Johnson and analysts Kenny Smith, Chris Webber and Charles Barkley will be on hand. Marv Albert and Doug Collins will call the games.

Seriously, what the hell is Barkley's problem with Cleveland?  Is it something to do with him getting arrested in the Flats?

He wants people to notice him

I care a bit.  I mean, the guy is a well known figure and he seems to go out of his way to knock us.

Downtown Cleveland was pictured briefly in the ABC special 'Earth 2100' last night.

Downtown Cleveland was pictured briefly in the ABC special 'Earth 2100' last night.

How so?

There was a picture from somewhere out on the lake, because the picture featured downtown Cleveland with a giant windmill in the foreground.

Erieview, The Anthony J. Celebrezze building, and I think city hall were the noticeable buildings.

It wasnt out on the lake just an taken looing south east from GLSC.  It was a nice shot though.  I think the point they were trying to make at that point was that we will need different power sources scattered all around.  Put I recall that we discussed on here somewhere that Wind turbines in urban enviroments wont work due to the swirling winds created by the buildings.  Ohh well still a nice shot.

I saw that too.......Very nice shot

Cleveland was also shown at the end of one of those "Earth After People," talking about how the deterioration of cities on the Great Lakes after we're gone pose different threats than other locations because of the intense freeze thaw.

They said, "large Great Lakes metropolises such as Chicago (shot of the skyline from south east of the city), Cleveland (shot of the city from northeast of the city out on the lake at sunset), and Detroit (shot of a deteriorating warehouse) will succumb to....."

The West Side Market was featured on Today today!  Al Roker is in CLE for his neice's hs graduation from Shaker so they did the weather segment from the WSM!  I wish I was able to see the tour but I had to leave for work.

Nice CLE shoutout! :-)

He also did some work in Cleveland in his past, so there's another connection.  From his Bio:

"After graduation, he moved on to weathercasting jobs in Washington, DC, and Cleveland, OH, before becoming the weekend weathercaster at WNBC in New York in 1983."

I love when he gave the "from the best location in the nation" shoutout.

How were people not made aware this was going to be taking place?

I think it was in the PD yesterday, of course maybe that's why nobody new about it. Ha.

Was watching MTV's Made on tuesday and it looked like they were somewhere in the flats (Velvet Bar or Velvet somethingorother, it was a hip hop club) and one of the bridges was lit up blue and key tower could be seen in the background. I literally turned it on as that shot was on the screen and didnt see much more of it after that so i dont know if he was from cleveland or not.

al roker was live in cleveland on the today show this morning. he must be visiting his relatives this weekend? he was in the westside market. people had i heart cleveland signage and it was pretty cool. i also saw a lot of cle+ signs too. it's great that everybody was aware and came out early for that!

^He said he was attending his niece's graduation from Shaker.

well, looks like we can at least be extras in the movie to add the Cleveland element:

Val Kilmer, Christopher Walken filming "The Irishman" in Detroit

by Jessica Nunez | MLive.com

More proof that Detroit is on the way to becoming the next Hollywood.

A new mobster flick staring Val Kilmer and Christopher Walken is filming in Detroit for the next several weeks. "The Irishman" will be released in 2010 and takes place in Cleveland, but will be shot entirely in the Motor City. They even shot what are likely some of the last moving pictures of Tiger Stadium.

The best part about it (other than the slightly increased chance of running into Christopher Walken at American Coney Island) is the movie needs local extras -- lots of 'em.

WXYZ.com, June 16 -- Producers are looking for 100 35-50ish year old white males to be Cleveland "Dock Workers."

All extras can wear vintage clothing from the 1970's if you have it in your wardrobe. Err on the side of bland and plain rather than bright or patterned style construction clothes.

Slickfire, a local online video production company, got some behind-the-scenes footage of a pyrotechnics shot for the film near Eastern Market.

why would they shoot footage of tiger stadium if the movie is to be set in cleveland?

Because shooting at CBS or Progressive Field just wouldn't look right for a story taking place in the 70s.

As for the rest of the city, I'm sure it's an economics/tax credit kind of things.

Bingo. Michigan just recently passed tax credits for film production. Detroit is very much an industrial town, as is Cleveland, which is probably why they decided to shoot there and not in Cleveland.

Which is why Ohio needs to pass those flipping tax credits already!!

well, looks like we can at least be extras in the movie to add the Cleveland element:

I wonder if the movie is about Danny Greene.
