^That's great, but I wish we could have more movies that both film here and are set here.  Seems we either have movies filmed here, but aren't set here (The Deer Hunter, A Christmas Story, Avengers-Winter Soldier) or films that are set here, but aren't filmed here (Major Leagues).  ... That's why films like Draft Day, Welcome to Collinwood and Fun Size (the Chelsea Handler coming-of-age flick nobody saw... not even me), are a welcome departure.

FIST was considered an example of the former and people complained about that, but the reasons why it was filmed in Iowa turned out to be interesting.  As per Wikipedia:

Most of the filming was done in Dubuque, Iowa. Dubuque was chosen firstly because the older sections of the town looked more like Cleveland of the 1930s than Cleveland did at the time, and secondly because of the absence of roof-mounted television antennas due to most of the homes having cable television. Because of the large bluffs, over-the-air television signals had problems reaching homes in the low-lying areas, so a cable system was developed in the mid-1950s, which was considerably earlier than many other municipalities.

''The Fortune Cookie'', a 1966 Billy Wilder classic and the first pairing of Jack Lemmon & Walter Matthau, set in Cleveland has always been my favorite Cleveland movie.  Matthau won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award.  Matthau plays a shyster lawyer with an office in the Terminal Tower.

I keep hearing rave reviews about 'Believeland'..... not from anyone not from Cleveland, though

I've heard great things about it from several local friends who are sports lovers.

Nas-produced, Erykah Badu-starring film ‘The Land’ coming, ft. music by Kanye

By Rob Sperry-Fromm May 6, 2016 3:29 PM

The Land

There’s a new, Nas-produced and Erykah Badu-starring movie on the way, and as you can probably imagine, the soundtrack might be as exciting as the movie. The movie is called The Land, and it’s about teenagers in Cleveland who want to be professional skateboarders but have to deal with gangs and drugs and so on. In addition to Badu, it stars Michael K Williams (aka Omar in The Wire) and rapper Machine Gun Kelly, and was directed by Steven Caple Jr.

The movie comes out on July 29 in theaters and On Demand via IFC Films. You can check out a new trailer below.

The trailer reveals that the soundtrack will also drop on July 29 via Nas’ label Mass Appeal, and features new music from Badu, Nas and MGK, as well as Kanye West, Pusha T, Jeremih, French Montana, Nosaj Thing and more. So yes, that would be new Kanye music.

Keep an eye out for The Land this summer, and check out the trailer below.

^ Well that's out of left field. I'm interested to see not only if it's well done overall, but also how this will be received by the skate-genre folks.

i know. i was looking up shows for the weekend and it popped right up. makes sense though with its heavy skate/music aspect.

Believeland was good.

I thought BelievelandD was good, overall. Could use a little more balance. Example if ur gonna start the movie with non sports downtrodden things like fires on rivers and kucinich, then u should use Lebron returning as some symbolism to talent retention and talk about the recent progress. Instead the end had people walking out of the cavs finals last year saying the same stuff that fans were saying after the elway and 95 Indians teams. Foreshadowing at its worst. Thought the local media guys told a good story...wish Raab wasn't the face of the fans...not overly impressed with him.

Overall, I think nationally a question often exists- why do these people like sports so much? And I think the documentary answered that well. It's more than about fandom, it's about people's that have seen their city struggle try to grab onto an identity.

Good take IMO by Grossi - #Believeland didnt depress me. Except for the Move, all those endings were preceded by the best times we've had. I miss them.

I had no desire to watch it. At age 49, I've already lived it.

Thanks for the post. I just watched it on-demand; it was good. "The drive" is still tough to watch after all these years. I think it was because I was at the game and saw it in person. My then girlfriend cried the whole way home. The others for me weren't nearly as heartbreaking.

^^Ironically, I think you were part of the target audience. Honestly, there were many parts people probably didn't fully grasp unless they lived it. Way too long of a story to tell in 90 minutes without leaving gaps.  I was skeptical about watching for probably the same reason as you, but am glad I did

spot on hts. I'm 33 and the 97 World Series and decision were the hardest part of that for me to watch. Shot, fumble, drive don't mean much to me. Actually, sadly, I've never really seen he Browns be good so that's why I'm a much bigger Indians fan

I was there too. Still have the Gameday program. The Drive would've lingered more painfully for me, but later that night I took a train trip to the East Coast with a college buddy and by the time I came back I had almost forgotten all about it -- if not for watching the Broncos-Giants Super Bowl a short time later.

So where will the shooting for Fast/Furious 8 start out? Anyone got a link to the shooting locations/dates/times?

FAST 8 (2017), a feature film in the “Fast and the Furious” franchise, will be shooting here in our beloved CLE from May 18 through June 8.

From Wikipedia: Vin Diesel hinted at an eighth film on Jimmy Kimmel Live! when he stated that Kurt Russell's character had been introduced in a role that would span multiple films…Chris Morgan will write his sixth script in the franchise, while Neal H. Moritz will return to produce the film. Moritz later stated, "[The story] is going to have to be something enticing for all of us. It has to be as good as or better [than Furious 7]."

GOOD AS OR BETTER THAN FURIOUS 7, people.

Please see below for some fast, furious, and fun (sorry) facts:

Other than what's been reported in the news, word on the crew side is they still haven't officially hired people even though it starts in a few days. At least, that's what my source tells me. I don't know what they're waiting for, but things like this always seem to be very last minute. Hire people, have them start in 24 hours.

Thanks!

Maybe it was something else...but there was filming going on last night on Prospect (which was closed) between Huron and E14th.

The crews were still out on the shoulder this morning.

I think that's something else. Monica Potter is back home and mentioned shooting something in that area.

That sounds plausible. I saw her at the Cleveland Flea on Saturday. Thanks!

Edit: it's annoying regardless when roads are closed without notice however

Well, it's all coming together now. That's my parking garage haha.  All I happened to see were steel plates on the ground and people brooming up a bunch of debris.

Reminded me of Bishop Bullwinkle.

General thoughts?

I'm excited about it. I think it's going to be a great movie. It's really well done, high quality. And it follows the tradition of coming-to-age urban films. And with the soundtrack being so star studded with so many different big hip hop artists on it, this movie has the potential to really be embraced by the Hip-Hop community. I'm very excited about it

Seems odd.  They're two different topics...one being Cleveland in TV and movies and the other being the business/ecomonic side of it.

On that note, many more Cleveland broadcasts from late night comics...set your DVRs!

If you really want to see Cleveland on screen in a very different way, this is the film in which to do so...

I saw the movie at Cedar-Lee and very much enjoyed it.  While some critics have been tough on the film from telling a time worn story of good kids with few opportunities being lured by crime (ie "Boyz in the Hood"), others liked its fresh POV.  I agree with the latter.  It was both hard, poignant and funny, too.  I felt this film's take as well as its characters were very fresh...

... and oh yeah, it really captured Cleveland well.  Not just the locales we all loved seeing: The WSM, Lakeview Terrace, the Lorain-Carnagie Bridge, the Detroit-Superior bridge subway, the old Max Hayes vocational HS (Director Steven Caple, Jr's alma mater), the Rapid (several shots), Terminal Tower (several shots), many Detroit-Shoreway neighborhoods, abandoned factories (one of which hosted the coolest scene, visually, in the entire film ... you just have to experience it), etc... More importantly, though, "The Land" captures the mood and feel of Cleveland.  It's palpable and UO'ers will instantly feel it... from the multicultural nature of the near West Side (whites, Blacks, Puerto Ricans, etc) and the general down-to-earth Midwestern openness that defines this city-- they even showcased the annual Puerto Rico Day which, of course, is a very big deal in Cleveland.  Many critics lauded the hard urban Cleveland locale as fresh and different from the typical New York, LA, Chicago setting moviegoers are so used to seeing.  I heartily agree... with a touch of bias, of course.

A number of Hollywood heavyweights were involved in this film: Kanye West (music), Erykah Badu (great score and as well as playing an interesting part in the film), Michael K. Williams (Omar from "The Wire"), Machine Gun Kelly (Shaker's own), and Kim Coats (who is hilarious, from "Sons of Anarchy"), and others...

I met the director, too... Definitely worth seeing.  Check this film out...

I love musicals, Broadway and Cleveland are such a beautiful scenarios for shooting music movies

Man I need to know where they are hiring crew for this.

Not clear if they're filming it locally, but it does have LeBron behind it so maybe.  Also the creator of Scrubs and writers from Community, both of which I love.

LeBron's a vunderkind... This is his umpteenth show now; he really does love show business as he already has 4-year-old dramady "Survivor's Remorse" and, of course, the recent "Cleveland Hustles" (which I really like).  CH is very good for Cleveland's image and is a positive show about Clevelanders trying to make it in biz; lots of city views, as well.  Obviously with the producer of "Scrubs" involved this should be a high-level comedy.  Good for LBJ!
