Get nervous on TV? Hell, that's why they invented print reporters like me! I gotta do a program about el cheapo interior decorating that looks like a million bucks. And what you've done looks priceless, MTS!

why can't I see the pics? whyyyy? they are not showing up

sorry.  I deleted them, since I wasn't going to be on.  Although, my best friend and I are both trying to get on "my house is worth what?"  His apartment makes my apartment is TO DIE FOR!  Also, a woman that used to work for me just had her apartment on a similar show.

No Umbrella- Election Day in The City, director Laura Paglin's documentary chronicling 2004 Election Day troubles in one of Cleveland's poorest neighborhoods, makes its television debut Thursday, November 9th, 7:30 PM (EST) on the Cinemax cable network. The half-hour film, which stars Cleveland Councilwoman Fannie Lewis and captures the chaos and frustration faced by inner city voters, was acquired by HBO Documentary Filmms after premiering at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and taking an Audience Award at the Sydney International Film Festival.

Laura Paglin previously directed Night Owls of Coventry. You can find out more about No Umbrella, which also showed at last year's Cleveland International Film Festival, at www.noumbrella.org.

I am still not sure If I am ready for this movie. That  day was among the darkest day in my memory (and I have lost a lot of loved ones in my life). My husband I had been volunteering for moveon.org and were assigned to bring sandwiches to people waiting in line to vote. in the cold rain. We literally begged people to stay in line and many did.  I remember the enthusiasm  and hope and then the misery after what happened. I spoke with other people that worked suburban polling places and they saw only a few minute wait if at all. I stood outside a tiny church in the Kinsman neighborhood for over 40 minutes in the rain waiting with a group of people just to sqeeze in the door. I saw this everywhere on the eastside. pathetic. But Im glad the movie was made. and hope I can watch it one day and feel like I do not need to go on the immigrate to Canada website when it is done.

This is barely on topic but I swear at the beginning of a late SNL sketch (Hugh Laurie, Beck) they used a short of the BP building to "set" a sketch that took place in a law office...in Connecticut.  Kinda need to see that.

This week I've been seeing running commercials about the citirama homes in Glenville on TV.  They discuss the riots, how the neighborhood went downhill, and now (as the narrator states, unfortunately, now 40 years later) the stately neighborhood is going throw amazing growth.

The area looks great, the neighborhood people look and sound positive and passionate about the place they call home!

Superman and many of the DC comics cartoons are being featured on A&E TV.

Lots of cool pictures of 1950s/1960s cleveland.

I just finished watchin United 93 earlier.  Good movie, but of course, very sad.  Doesn't bring back very good memories.  According to the movie, I believe it was realized by those on the ground that United 93 was hijacked within Cleveland Airspace.  There is a scene or two that takes place in the Cleveland Air Traffic Control Center.  I hated watching the movie knowing what would happen in the end, but it was interesting to get an idea of what may have happened.  If you buy it or rent it be sure to get the special features.  It was interesting to see what the families of the those who died thought about the movie.  It was touching too as the actors met the family members of those in whome they portrayed.  :*-(  Never Forget.

Hmm... Looks like an Urban Ohio pet project falls into this news story - a new convention center. It sounds like things may be rumbling forward slowly.

This is a great article, though. I need to write this Carmody guy a letter to tell him his hard work is appreciated!

Lights, Camera,...Cleveland

We oughta be in pictures, and convention center could give city a shot

Hollywood is finally noticing Cleveland.

Over the past five years, the city has hosted a steady flow of big-budget films -- everything from "American Splendor" to "Spider-Man 3" swinging through downtown on Euclid Avenue.

Now, Cleveland is poised to leap to the next level and earn a spot alongside regional film hubs like Chicago and Austin, Texas. How? By opening up the 84-year-old, often-empty and outdated Cleveland Convention Center to Hollywood filmmakers.

...........

I suppose it's too late for Columbus to something like this now that Cleveland is doing it.  Of course, I don't know of any place that already exists that makes a good sound stage.  But building one now would probably be pointless.

This is a really exciting idea, however, i think it does tend to slant the convention center thing to Forest City because if Cleveland becomes a film hotspot (which is a great thing) it just becomes another arguement to keep the old convention center for another use and build new behind Tower City...

^But it would be the first truly compelling argument for the Tower City location that I've heard.

I'm very pleased to hear about this partnership and the progressive thinking of the City on this one.  I'm sure there were plenty of reasons to say no to this arrangement, but by saying yes, we're making a lot of things possible.

On a side note, my impression was that the new convention center on the mall would be built where the current county buildings are, on the west side of Mall B and north to the lake.  I don't know that this film studio idea would necessarily rule the mall site out.

All the more reason to build the convention center, Medical Mart and Production House.  This way the CC (district) is not a one trick pony....like the stadium

  • Author

^This is very true for the center and for the neighborhood.  The Civic Center district really isn't very hopping...day or night!  With more destinations and mixture of uses, the ample open spaces will see better use and there will be more activity between the heart of Downtown and the Lakefront...thus making the distance appear a little less formidable!

I agree. That story pissed me off to no end. WTF is wrong with them? We can flush money down the toliet to corrupt lobbyists, but the idea of creating REAL, NEW jobs somehow needs further examination?

This really, really, really makes me mad.

CLEVELAND: A MOVIEMAKING CITY ON THE RISE

Moviemaker magazine just published its annual list of the 10 Best American Cities to Live, Work and Make Movies. Cleveland did not crack to the Top 10, according to Plain Dealer Film Critic Clint O'Connor, but it received a very nice mention as one of the Cities on the Rise. It was praised for the Hyacinth Lofts live-work spaces, the availability of the Cleveland Convention Center as a production facility, and the ready assistance of Chris Carmody and the Greater Cleveland Film Commission. The other rising cities were: Seattle, Tucson, and Hampton Roads, Va.

SKY-HIGH CONFESSIONAL

In the skies over Cleveland, airplane passengers will hear people confess their love for film. Julie Washington reports that the Cleveland International Film Festival’s 30-second trailer, titled “Confess Your Love For Film,” is being shown on Continental Airlines flights to and from Cleveland starting this week. The festival takes place March 15-25 at Tower City Cinemas.

This year’s trailer features film buffs confessing little secrets, such as “I like to sit in the dark with strangers.” It was filmed by Kate O’Neil and Kevin Kerwin’s locally based production company Authentic Films, said CIFF executive director Marcie Goodman.

This is so funny to me, as Continental doesn't have many planes,  that fly into or depart Cleveland, with IFE!  Yes Continental is the Hub Carrier, but why limit it to one airline.  Again, another good idea, that is poorly executed.  there should be kiosk at the airport, at the major rapid stations & hotel lobbies.  Marketing the festival in other cities papers.

They started marketing the film festival in other cities last year (as a component of an ACE grant they received from the county), I think primarily in Pittsburgh and Columbus. This likely contributed at least partially to their record-level attendance last year. They are working to incrementally increase their marketing presence each year. Last May, they made Time Magazine's list of excellent regional festivals in the article "Couldn't Make Cannes? Try Cleveland" ... here's how it was described:

CLEVELAND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Presented by the Cleveland Film Society each March, this Ohio cinefest is renowned for its diversity and inclusiveness. Specializing in foreign films and shorts, the lineup this year includes family features, independents, documentaries and gay and lesbian movies.

I'm not dealing with anyone ... I don't work for the Film Society; CFS posted the mention on their website.

This is quite a slam on Carmody. Much of it seems pretty trumped up to me, but who knows.

Chris Carmody Answers Some Questions

An Online Exclusive of The Free Times

Editor’s note: Chris Carmody declined to be interviewed, but answered questions in writing.

Why did you form the film commission as a private non-profit instead of pushing for it to be an office of the city?

The work of film commissions is by its nature regional – not municipal (except in huge cities like New York). Virtually no production wants locations exclusively found in one city; they generally want a range of locations we can provide from Ashtabula to Mansfield and even Sandusky ...

This is not a Cleveland in the movies thing...but Cleveland in the  media. Next week the NBC Thurs PM show 30 Rock has an episode titled "Cleveland" . The episode spoiler indicated Tina Fey's love interest is moving to the "midwest" . Given the cruel nature of this show, I am afaid it won't be pretty.

I like the show 30 Rock, but they've already made one dig on Cleveland.. I can't remember exactly what it was, but it was a harsh one because I remember groaning when I heard it.

makes me wonder if someone on writing/production staff has Cleveland connections...

30 Rock will also be having a reoccurring character who has just moved from Cleveland to New York in an upcoming episode.  Possibly Tina Fey will be interested in "Cleveland" or "Midwest," meaning the character.  In fact, the store Cleveland and Beyond located in the Arcade has provided some of his office decorations and T-shirts of the character, including a newly made "I love Cleveland" T-shirt (note to other UOers, wink wink).  If his first episode is not this one, then keep an eye on future episodes that this episode may create the lead in for.  Apparently he is supposed to be a more of a hip character, so hopefully a slightly good image for the city?  I'm not too worried on this one though.

Isn't Fey from Cleveland (or Cleveland Area).

Isn't Fey from Cleveland (or Cleveland Area).

Philadelphia.

veracity and carmody's online reply aside, what bugs me is the article is written from such a locally typical nihlistic perspective -- which is apparantly still too damn commonplace in cleveland print media. there are no researched comparisons to similar film commissions in other cities, no suggestions or solutions or alternatives, just a lot of criticism & bickering, then boom the long article just ends. on top of the general sour bent i find that to be lazy journalism.

i cant wait for the internet to finally kill off these weekly rags, they all gotta be hangin on by a thread these days. i know the voice is a mess and in complete meltdown mode.

I don't know if this is worthy of getting too upset about. The shows ratings are pretty poopy due to the Ugly Betty/Grey's Anatomy lineup on ABC...and all that Survivor/CSI stuff on CBS. This won't be talked about the next day...unless city leaders get upset and start issuing statements. I hope the city lies low on these episodes even if it paints Cleveland in a bad light (which is probably a good possiblity). If the city gets wound up about the first episode...then more than likely alot more people will watch the second due to the press.

I don't watch TV, so I will be expecting a word for word transcript, with analysis, of all Cleveland references on 30 Rock from now on.

Thank you in advance,

X

Yeah, I hope the episode treats Cleveland well.  Damn, funny show though.

leave it to that smug scarface fey to go for the lowest common denominator humor (yes i am purposely firing the first shot across the bough by saying that). grrr. however, i agree its best to ignore it publically and it sounds like the whole show will just go away on its own. i must admit tho, i have seen one early episode of 30 rock and as i recall it was funny, but i never watched again.

Jeez, maybe they'll actually be nice to us.

A 'love letter' to the city of Cleveland? This keeps sounding worse and worse. There may be an opening in the CVB office soon.

From a TV Guide.com spoiler blog:

"And, needless to say, the episode is a particular treat for people from Cleveland. (Alert the tourism office to stock up on brochures!)"

Maybe it won't be all that bad..  Tounge-in-cheek, perhaps?  The episode deals with Jason Sudeikis' character tiring of NYC and contemplating a move to the midwest and his character has been painted with an idealist's brush so far.  I like the actor and the show is growing on me.  I'll hope for the best.

this is quite surprizingly hopeful news. we'll see.

whoa, check this out.  They have an "interactive" map of Cleveland on the 30 Rock website.

http://www.nbc.com/30_Rock/

The "Cleveland" episode airs tonight at 9 on NBC

Floyd, played by Jason Sudekis, is Fey's love interest in the show. He's from Cleveland and has had it with NYC, so they consider a move to Cleveland.

the (enemy) NBC did something cute, I might watch the episode on the hush tip.

That's a nice map!

Well, I'm jealous. I anticipate a bunch of quotes from tonight's episode showing up here soon.
