Jim Rome is useless.

I heard he was going to interview Mike Brown. Ernest Byner, Jim Brown, Bernie Kosar, and Grady Sizemore.  Is it over?

Jim Rome Recap:

Rome Takes Over Cleveland

August 28, 2009

by: Craig

Yesterday, Jim Rome made a visit to ESPN Cleveland WKNR.  He did his show from their studios in the Galleria and spent the entire day with Cleveland based guests and praising one of his most supportive affiliates.  I listened to the entire show yesterday and for us Clevelanders it was a veritable smorgasborg of Cleveland related talk.  Rome talked to Mike Brown, Jim Brown (not related,) Earnest Byner, Bernie Kosar, and Grady Sizemore.  It would have been a completely perfect day if Rome had found a way to track down Cleveland Cavalier Delonte West.  Rome bemoaned the fact that he couldn’t track him down on the air.  But it was eventful day nonetheless.

Rome talked to Jim Brown about civil rights, the movie business and even tried to get him to revisit his very public feud with Tiger Woods.  Jim Brown likes to speak his mind, but he seemed to not want to do it on Jim Rome’s terms.  The rest of his time on the show was mostly talking about his foundation working with fringe gang members to avoid trouble.

Grady Sizemore spoke about the Indians and his most interesting answer was when Rome asked him why he continues to play through an elbow injury in meaningless baseball games.  Grady’s answer was interesting because it was basically, “I keep playing because I can.  Why wouldn’t I play through an injury when I can be on the field?”  While I don’t think it casted the organization in the best possible light because it seemed like they didn’t have a plan, you have to give credit to Grady for being a really tough guy.  Now, I am sure a lot of people (our own TD included) think Grady should have shut it down at some point this year, but you have to put that on the organization and not the player.

Earnest Byner was a great guest.  He spoke about how much he loved playing in Cleveland.  He spoke about “The Fumble.”  After explaining how dealing with that fateful play had helped him become the person that he has become, Earnest was asked by Rome if he would choose to have the fumble take place all over again knowing what he knows now.  Earnest Byner provided a big laugh when he responded in the negative.  His take was that while he recognizes how that day has impacted his life and how he has been a better person because of it, he still would never wish to have it happen again.  Rome also did Byner a solid by comparing his infamous moment with Jim Everett to “The Fumble.”

Bernie Kosar was also entertaining with his in-studio appearance.  He talked a bit about the current Browns.  He talked about his time at Miami.  I don’t want to take Bernie for granted, but it was a lot of the same old stories that we have grown to love.  When Rome asked Bernie who he thinks should be the quarterback for the Browns this year, Bernie was somewhat noncommittal.  He made sure not to get himself into trouble by picking a guy, but he did point out that a lot of the sentiment in the city is that people want to see what Quinn can do.

The highlight for me was Mike Brown.  There were some interesting nuggets in there.  When Brown was asked about Shaq and how he was going to get along with the team and whether he was actually going to defer to LeBron, Mike had a complex answer.  He mentioned that he has no problem with guys who say all the right things even if they secretly want something else.  Then he gave an example that might have some Cavs fans happy.  He mentioned he plans on playing young guys like JJ Hickson and D-Block a good amount this year.  He said that even if those guys don’t make the Cavs the absolute best at the times they are on the floor that it was his goal to give them minutes.  He expected his veteran power forwards to be good mentors and support the young guys even if they were looking to steal the young guys’ minutes on the floor.  So, get ready to see some development of the young guys this year Cavs fans!

All in all it was a great show to listen to for us Clevelanders.  It is a testament to us as sports fans. It is a testament to the ownership of WKNR, Craig Karmazin.  It is a testament to Rome himself for caring enough to come and visit our oft-maligned city so many times in his career.  It is nice to have our loyalty rewarded for once even if our sports teams can’t seem to ever deliver.

I cannot believe someone paid for that.  That isn't even a true 3 bedroom.  You're really paying for the balcony.  If my memory serves me correctly this is one of those units that access to the balcony is via a room used as a bedroom.  It's really two bedrooms and a "flex" area.

Not sure if anyone has noticed this one, but Cleveland is the topic of one of those Sprint 4G network commercials.  It's the one about the people getting revised meeting agendas and they then show a MapQuest map of Cleveland, then show the car the people traveling under a freeway sign saying "Cleveland" with heavy metal playing in reference apparently to the Rock Hall.

Patricia Heaton, the wife from Everybody Loves Raymond, gave a brief interview in People Magazine where she mentioned being from Cleveland, that her agent warned her about having a Cleveland/Midwestern accent, and that she ignored her agent's advice.

I've seen this one too and definitely took notice!  But I wonder if perhaps they're market specific?  I know that might seem like a lot of work, but it's really random.

If you notice the Sprint billboards along the highway sport a night shot of the Cleveland skyline at night (looking from the east I believe), and I'm fairly certain those are just for NE Ohio.

I'm be in Florida later in the week and see if they're running the same map.

its a national campaign

Yep, saw it in NOLA

So wait, I'm confused.  What's with the Molly Shannon condo thing?  Is she from Cleveland, or something?

She's from Shaker Heights.

I saw the Sprint commercial down here as well.

Cleveland was featured on HGTV’s House Hunters. Although the house was located in Cuyahoga Falls which I would consider an Akron suburb they called it suburban Cleveland. They only mentioned Akron once or twice and all the references and shots were from downtown Cleveland.

^ I saw that episode. They also called Ravenna and Kent suburbs of Cleveland.

Crap...I missed that.  What did the homes look like??  new build open concept?

No more like cookie cutter & culdesac. I was kind of disappointed as the episode shot in Cincy featured homes in their old historic neighborhoods. It would have been nice to see Ohio City or Tremont featured instead of new construction in Ravenna and Kent.

Then I'm glad I missed or I would have been swearing at the TV.

Super Nanny was in Medina last week...if anyone cares.

I want to see an urban family on one of those shows.  I say spank your kids and put some fear in their a$$e$.  Maybe this is why I dont have children.  :wtf:

Super Nanny was in Medina last week...if anyone cares.

Oh, yeah, I saw that!  Supernanny's comments about older kids need to be kids and not be taking care of their younger siblings made me think she should pay a visit to the Duggar family!

Those freaks.  You know they are having another baby?  I'm surprised her uterus hasn't drop out of her body.  That is just ridiculous.

Their oldest kids is about to have a kid.  So their child (uncle) and grand child (nephew) will grow up together.

They are going to be too old to take care of their youngest children.

My brother, skank-in-law and their five kids is a cakewalk to this family.

i saw the sprint commercial this morning during the today show!

This is not the "beating children for civil peace discussion" thread.  So back to Cleveland in Movies/TV.

Good grief.

My documentary on the surfing culture in Cleveland is premiering in New York City on Sunday September 27th. Any UrbanOhio all stars in the vicinity of NYC please feel free to come by the Tribeca Cinemas, show starts at 4:25pm. We're getting a lot of interest and a ton of good publicity. Tickets available online but hurry, it will probably sell out- it's a small venue.

Watched the trailer.  Thought it was a bit too long, but I'm interested to see the movie.  Boy, the synopsis of the film on the website was depressing-it read like a PD headline.

haha how funny. was it john or rich? john is my step-bro. well sort of. my mom got married to his dad after i got married. ha. they are good guys and have a real passion for the business. i love that strip of madison, its very cool.

ps -- i just ordered tickets -- so looking forward to it!

Hi Jeremy. You're absolutely right, the trailer is too long. Getting a shorter, more professional looking pair of trailers is definitely on the agenda.

The synopsis may sound depressing, but the angle of the film is from a surfing/waterfront perspective. Sure I am playing up the lost industry, past pollution, gray skies, the cold, but I am differentiating between Cleveland and places like San Diego, Waikiki, Maui and Australia.

In this film you will hear surfers relocated from Florida, Hawaii's North Shore, Orange County, etc talking about why Cleveland is such an amazing place. And people we have screened for have all come away loving this city, its striking character, past hardships and its stunning potential for the future.

Thanks for your interest and honest critique. I do hope you end up seeing (and liking!!) the film, and you'll see the city and its waterfront from a perspective that's a little bit differnt. In some ways, Cleveland is truly a surfing mecca.

I met John. Again, very cool guy and dedicated. Hodads is one heck of a record store. I'm so glad you bought tickets! Looking forward to meeting you (I'll be the sweating, nervous guy about to run out of the theater lol).

Thanks so much for your support for our film, and for Tribeca Cinemas.

^^ Thanks for the reply.  I would love to see the film, so please let me know if you plan on hitting any film festival circuits out here in LA.  We have a ton of festivals, and it would be great to see you in one.

Shaq Vs. is on tonight.  He is fighting Oscar De La Hoya.  Interesting note - Shaq was announced as "fighting out of Cleveland, Ohio"

From what I saw of the fight, Shaq was kind of giving Oscar the business with his jab.  "20 reach advantage seems too much to overcome.

Jeremy we would love to hit up some festivals in LA. We haven't targeted any specific ones yet, but we will. Any recommendations?

California is an important place for us...after the festival circuit, when the film comes out on dvd we're planning on touring it, playing it at theaters, gyms, coffee shops or wherever we can find an audience. It's going to be a chance of a lifetime for us as filmmakers.

Please feel free to join our email list on the site!! Would love to meet more of the out of the area Urban Ohio jet set in person!!

It looks great. Can't wait. And thank you, thank you, thank you for using some local music ... good bands on your Media section. Have you guys started talking about local (Cleveland) screenings yet?

Thanks so much 8ShadesofGray. Everyone we have screened for is in love with the Soundtrack!

There is a such a tremendous amount of great music here, and we wanted all of it to be local, or at least regional ie The Great Lake Swimmers are from Toronto.

I also have to mention that The Dreadful Yawns, GLS, This Moment in Black History, Gabe Schray from Houseguest, BarnOwls, Celebrity Pilots and the All Golden...they all kindly donated their music to this film project.  In return I hope to introduce those bands to a whole new audience and get them as much publicity as possible.

I'm dying, I want to show everyone the film. But but we want to get into the Cleveland International Film Festival in March, and their rules prevent prior screenings in Ohio. But after that I hope to have several area screenings with the local bands playing live for the soundtrack.

It should be pretty wild! Hopefully we'll get off to a flying start with a good review from renown Urban Ohio critic, mrnyc at the premier.

Tony Rizzo and "The Really Big Show" on 850 are filling in for Jim Rome on Monday while Rome is on vacation.  So they will be broadcast to all of Rome's affiliates nationwide (much like when the Sklar Bros or Jay Moore fill in).  They must have made quite an impression when Rome was in town to visit a few weeks ago.

On Saturday, from 10 AM to 4 PM, at the Colonial Arcade and the Baseball Heritage Museum, there will be events surrounding the opening of two exhibits, on Tom Manning and "The Kind From Cleveland".. The KfC is a film shot entirely in Cleveland in 1949 and features many Cleveland Indians from the '48 Championship team. Here is the IMBD link to the description of the film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0041545/plotsummary

Mr. Tommy Cook, who was in the film as 'the kid' will be on hand as the film will be presented as well. On Monday he will star in a live old time radio program..the admission is free for both events... I think I posted this in events too.. But thought maybe people would find it here as well as it is local film related. I had the pleasure of meeting Tommy Cook the other night when he made a cameo guest appearance at the Radio Mystery Theater Night Social at Visible Voice Books in Tremont. One other very important note, aside from working with many other great radio voice actors and some pretty iconic names on the big screen as well... Tommy is best known for his role as the "Little Beaver" character on the The Adventures Of Red Ryder  old radio program.

Wow, they out-PDed the PD. That "article" was so dripping with hyperbole that it was difficult in places to determine whether material was satirical or allegedly factual. The tone was so negative that I could barely make it through it. Negative enough that I will probably never, ever read The Independent again.

It will be interesting to see where this shakes out. If corruption is occurring at the level the article suggests, it's hard to imagine this not prompting legal intervention in the very near future. But I actually walk away finding this news outlet more suspect than Nehst.

Child...I feel the same way.  Although I stopped reading...at some point.  It was just too much.  Just slap some bullet points up there for christ sakes.

Negative slant or not, Renner is getting to be pretty well known for credible investigative journalism and I appreciate his article.  I told you guys it was fishy!

Knowing I just got done eating a muffin..... :|

I remember starting a thread on them last year, and we were already speculating from day one.

The thread must be getting cleaned...

Nehst deleted their profile on Myspace months ago...A serious red flag, but like everyone in the local film community, I wanted to believe that they were for real. To me it's obvious they were taking advantage of our optimism.

Anyhow, I just gave Cleveland some love in a Q&A interview on the New York Surf website. Please check it out:

http://www.newyorksurf.com/2009/09/11/a-freshwater-perspective/

p.s. the interviewer's wife is from Solon

Andrew Heyman: "There is...a dedicated crew of surfers on Lake Erie, making do with what they’ve got and making their own thing happen. Whatever you want to call their “scene,” it’s not burdened by the cynicism and obnoxious chest-thumping one associates with ocean surfing these days. It’s got a quiet, DIY aesthetic that is a hundred times more underground, more punk rock, than anything we’ve come to associate with the surf scene around New York..."

I thought the Nehst article was hilarious.  And right on point.  From the moment of their announcement in the PD, they sounded like hacks and scam artists.
