HBO's new show "Boarwalk Empire" had a few Cleveland references last night when covering the topic of Warren Harding's rise to the Republican nomination. They mention "those fast-money guys in Cleveland" who were behind Harding and how smart they were, politically. I assumed they meant Rockefeller, etc.

What a fantastic show.  "Those guys know what they're doing in Ohio."

Hell yeah we do!

Ah, the good old days. Russo and Dimora just don't compare.

Lots of Cleveland references lately in pop culture. In the newish movie Red, Bruce Willis had a City of Cleveland recycling bin outside his house, and when a piece of his mail is shown, the address is Parma Heights.  In the excellent movie The Town, Ben Affleck suggests to a girl that if she joins witness protection, they will send her to someplace "safe like Cleveland." And in the boring remake of Haiwaii Five-O on tv, one episode had the bad guy originally based in Cleveland and they showed his Cleveland Police Dept rap sheet. Just some things I noticed.

On this same note that I mentioned yesterday,I was watching something last night and Cleveland was mentioned again!  For the life of me, I can't remember what the show was.  Anybody see it (I know that's vague)?

Sweetie, can you give a network?  An approximate time you viewed the show?

Did you check TVguide online to see if you could locate the show?

^ I wish I could.  I was working on something else, so I wasn't paying attention.  I just heard "Cleveland" and glanced up.  That's not much help, I know.

We heard it too, I can't remember what show it was.  I think it might have been Sh*t My Dad Says.

Okay, not so glamours but Cleveland was on AMW last Saturday about a case from the 1960's-70's. There were shots from Public Square around the Key Bank Tower (I almost typed Society Center!).

Another Cleveland reference last night on tv.  CSI: mentioned Cleveland and the burning river as the beginning of the Clean Water Act.

I think it is kind of funny, and now I have to wonder if I know anyone on the HIMYM writing team

There was just a reference to Cleveland on SNL.  It was a skit with Julian Assange making threats from prison including that wikileaks would take down Orbitz and redirect all flights through "Cleveland International Airport"  Not the most flattering reference but whatever.  I guess the dig is that Cleveland is bad which is not really that funny even to non-Clevelanders.  It was a bit weak.

Its become my opinion that over the years, Cleveland is the #1 "go to city" ,whether good or bad, whenever any sort of tv, movie, commerical, etc. need to reference a city, i kinda love it. I remember earlier this year or last there was a sprint commercial talking about driving through Cleveland and showed a map and everything.

UO nerd observation- they took Key and BP out of the skyline shot, but left in the Federal Courthouse and I'm not sure, but I think that the Gateway Complex is still in there.

I was wondering the same thing about Stokes.  It also looks like they added some building in the CSU area, no?  There are several things about that skyline that don't look right.

seen this wkend in a ny subway station

The wikipedia article on Danny Green is very interesting.  It's funny how the good old days of Collinwood were so violent just the same

^Yeah.... sort of my point in the "up and coming neighborhoods" discussion.

Definitely see Progressive field with the lights on (looks clearer on the HD trailer). Can't tell if there's an extra building or not near CSU. Looks like they just scrubbed out BP and Key.

Anyone watch "Hot in Cleveland: last night?  Here were the reviews:

TV Land’s ‘Cleveland’ rocks but ‘Retired’ needs work

“Hot” sizzles in its second-season opener, thanks to surviving “Golden Girl” Betty White, who turned 89 Monday. As Elka, she finds herself sharing a prison cell with a hardened criminal named Diane, played by Mary Tyler Moore, whose dialogue consists of shoutouts to the legendary 1970s sitcom they shared. “I hate spunk,” she tells Elka in her best Ed Asner glare. “Hot” is shameless enough to fan baby boomer nostalgia, but at least it knows how to maximize a cameo.

Melanie (Valerie Bertinelli) is angry at her cop boyfriend (Springfield native David Starzyk) for arresting Elka. Victoria (Wendie Malick) finds out she’s been “Madoff-ed” — her business manager squandered her fortune. Joy (Jane Leeves) faces deportation and carries a back story that is just toosad for this show. Yet amid the bawdy double-entendres, writer/series creator Suzanne Martin sneaks in a smart exchange between Joy and Elka about aging that proves this show can rise above silliness with something serious to say. It would just rather distract you into thinking otherwise.

The day the Cleveland mob died

Another look back at the Greene bombing 25 years ago

By Ken Prendergast

Few Greater Clevelanders under the age of 35 may remember how different things were in their city in 1977. And it wasn’t just about disco music, long hair and bell-bottomed jeans.

But, for perhaps the first time in the 25 years since flamboyant mobster Danny Greene was murdered by a car bomb, young Greater Clevelanders may have some idea of the fear that pervaded their metro area in those turbulent years. Today, it's threats of terrorism for which we're being asked by authorities to maintain a watchful eye.

In the 1970s, however, it wasn't threats of explosive violence that terrorized Northeast Ohio's citizenry. Instead, it was the real and horrifyingly frequent use of it. By the time Greene’s life was cut short Oct. 6, 1977, in the eastern suburb of Lyndhurst, Cuyahoga County had seen 37 bombings in the previous year -- the most for any major city in America.

Interesting to note, that supposedly the movie backed out of Michigan because they did away with their tax credits...  Now that Kasich is bragging about possibly landing this for Cleveland/Ohio, I also heard that Ohio is thnking about doing away with the credits  (due to the states bbudget issues)..

I very happy to see during Hot in Clev's open credits, that in addition to Mayday's photo they have added one of my sweet flats. Love it. Makes me homesick (a little).

The Anthony Bourdain "Cleveland" episode is on the Travel Channel at 5 p.m. this Friday (3/4)

Awesome episode, except for the Skyline part...they must have felt sorry for Cincinnati.

Anyway, I bought the episode on iTunes and regularly watch it...good to see Harvey Pekar as well.

This is confusing.

"A new Superman movie will be filmed in Cleveland, Gov. John Kasich announces"

Is this about Superman or just a biopic of his creators?  How/when did Disney/Marvel get the rights to make Superman?  According to this article, http://www.slashfilm.com/warner-bros-has-lost-krypton-will-lose-superman-in-2013/ , it's still a few years away from happening.

And finally, how the heck will this movie only cost $40 mill?

Still, cool and completely surprising news.

Superman isn't a Marvel property. Certainly not a Disney one. Someone is confused; my guess is Kasich misspoke, replacing 'Superhero' with 'Superman', or something like that.

The budget is probably just the portion being done in Cleveland.

Thats what I think too.  It really is expected to be "The Avengers", and likely the budget is just for the Cleveland portion.

Looks like the article has been revised to remove references to Superman.

Man, cleveland.com blew that one

And now there's this article:  So two movies???

Upcoming "Avengers" movie will be filmed in Cleveland

Published: Thursday, March 03, 2011, 2:37 PM    Updated: Thursday, March 03, 2011, 2:44 PM

By Michael Sangiacomo, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Avengers are coming to Cleveland!

Gov. John Kasich announced that the upcoming Marvel movie featuring the superhero team, The Avengers, scheduled for a 2012 release, will be filmed in Cleveland.

He made the announcement before Mayor Frank Jackson's State of the City address this afternoon at the City Club. It was confirmed by Katie Sabatino, publicist for the Ohio Film Office, who said the agreement was made with Marvel Comics after negotiations.

"We have been in dialogue with Marvel Comics all week and we finally reached an agreement," she said. "We're very excited about it."

Wayne Hill, chairman of the Greater Cleveland Commission, said The Avengers movie will be the largest film ever made in Ohio and that filming is expected to start in the film.

Ivan Schwartz, executive director of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission, said the movie also means jobs.

"It's tremendous for the city's and the regional effort to have films made here," he said. "It means a lot of jobs for people in our area."

The film was to have been shot in Detroit, but was moved to Cleveland after reports that Michigan's governor planned to eliminate the tax credits.

"Marvel has stated publicly that the change was because of the tax credit loss," said Hill. "The fact that we have it in Ohio has made a huge difference."

^ I think it's time for me to finally make my hollywood cameo :)

So there's a chance of running into Scarlett Johannson?

^ LOL

I hope the stars actually do some filming here though

So they actually wanted to film the Irishman in Cleveland. Sucks we missed out on the opportunity to film a movie here of a story that actually takes place here.

I heard a producer saying "Kill the Irishman" wasn't filmed here because Cleveland had gentrified too much, unlike gritty Detroit... yeah, right... Fact is, Detroit and Michigan's film bureau have been very aggressive about getting films and TV shows filmed in Detroit... I wonder if, as usual, our lack of aggressiveness and organization isn't hurting us.

Thats pretty funny....  No actually it was because Michigan had the tax credits in place, when Ohio hadnt yet moved on them.  Now Michigan has done away with the credits and Ohio finally has them.  So now the tables have turned and Clevand won a movie over from Detroit (The Avengers)

Its just unfortunate we didnt get a movie set in Cleveland filmed here.
