March 10, 201114 yr Its just unfortunate we didnt get a movie set in Cleveland filmed here. ... that, in real life, actually took place here.
March 10, 201114 yr Its just unfortunate we didnt get a movie set in Cleveland filmed here. Its hardly unique and happens pretty often.... and theres been plenty of movies that were filmed in Cleveland that were set somewhere else.
March 10, 201114 yr I believe it was there because we couldn't let them use our stadium for some reason. I forget why.
March 10, 201114 yr i think it was because Milwaukee County Stadium didn't also have an NFL team using it.
March 11, 201114 yr I heard a producer saying "Kill the Irishman" wasn't filmed here because Cleveland had gentrified too much, unlike gritty Detroit... yeah, right... Fact is, Detroit and Michigan's film bureau have been very aggressive about getting films and TV shows filmed in Detroit... I wonder if, as usual, our lack of aggressiveness and organization isn't hurting us. Thats pretty funny.... No actually it was because Michigan had the tax credits in place, when Ohio hadnt yet moved on them. Now Michigan has done away with the credits and Ohio finally has them. So now the tables have turned and Clevand won a movie over from Detroit (The Avengers) Yes, but you can't discount that Detroit was very proactive in getting movies and TV set there. They've had many, many more than Cleveland and most people would agree that Detroit is more distressed than Cleveland (although you wouldn't know it by our latest Census numbers). The fact is, "The Avengers" was headed to Detroit had not the tax credits been revoked by Michihgan. And, yes, docu-drama movies are sometimes set in different places than where they took place. But the fact is, with Cleveland's unfortunately/unfairly fragile image, the last thing we need is Detroit, of all places, hosting filimings of projects based on events, like "Irishman" that are actually a part of Cleveland lore.

March 24, 201114 yr Being from Cleveland isn't really part of his gimmick, but wrestler Derrick Bateman (real name Mike Hutter), a really nice and HUGE guy, is presently a wrestler in the WWE. If anyone ever ate at the Lyndhurst Cheesecake factor over the last five or six years, you might have seen him as a server. I know a bunch of his friends and have hung out with him/them a few times. He's definitely proud of being a Clevelander and comes home quite a bit - he even threw a rather nice party at Velvet Dog after one of the shows a few months ago.
March 25, 201114 yr Was able to see Kill the Irishman last night here in Chicago... I liked it, as it reminded me of the 70s mob heyday in NEO...Pretty well acted and written, like most of the criticisms of the film I agree that many of the characters were not given much of a chance to develop...run time was only about 1:30, so that did not help...and the budget constraints did not help with set variety. Needless to say, with the proper budget and advertising, this could have been a good attraction nationwide. Detroit did a nice job standing in as 70s CLE (not sure if that is a compliment), but it would have been great to identify with local landmarks. Overall, nice work and well worth the price of admission...which is $9.50 now here in CHI!
March 28, 201114 yr I was talking to a couple people who were involved "The Avengers" movie yesterday, and they told me two very interesting things: 1) In regards to filming locations, they are planning on filming in and around the old Cleveland Trust Rotunda on Euclid Ave, as well as parts of the Industrial Valley. They couldn't tell me the other locations simply because their Cleveland geography was lacking. 2) They told me they were puzzled why Cleveland hasn't invested in any major sound stages or back lots...especially with the current Ohio tax credit, if Cleveland had the facilities, they would have a monopoly in the Midwest. Particularly they mentioned using some of the old Industrial Valley land as a staging ground with back lots and sound stages since it is so centrally located, available land, and interesting.

I have no knowledge of the film industry but what kind of investment would this involve?
March 28, 201114 yr I think there are plenty of abandoned structures around Cleveland that would work well as sound stages. I remember reading something a few years back that mentioned the CC as ideal for that purpose, but of course that is no longer an option.
March 28, 201114 yr Okay, not to bring this up again but.... Do you think the people in front of breuer tower could have been just the movie people checking out the location?
March 31, 201114 yr Just saw the new documentary Facing Forward (http://www.facingforwardfilm.com/) at the film festival last night, which I thought was really good. This is a film that really delves into Cleveland's more troubled neighborhoods, i.e. it may not be the movie you want to show friends and family right before they visit. That being said, I thought it was both honest and optimisitic. Facing Forward follows one troubled student as he goes through two grades of E Prep (just as the school has come into existence). It highlights how Tyree, with limited literacy at 7th grade, proceeds through a very rigorous educational setting and the sometimes extreme challenges he faces in his home life. Definitely worth checking out, particularly if you have even a passing interest in the Cleveland education system or urban education in general.
March 31, 201114 yr Would the mostly abandoned Euclid Square Mall be big enough for sound stages and other production facilities for movie-making?
March 31, 201114 yr Yeah, it was really good :) I also really loved the model that was employed, with editing and production assistance coming from students at both Cleveland State and Tri-C. Great to see a high-quality local film highlighting a high-quality local school providing skill training for local people interested in film careers.

April 19, 201114 yr This pretty funny...did anyone see this live?? ESPN, Oprah surprise Cleveland man with date to be a guest sportscaster Published: Monday, April 18, 2011, 4:56 PM Updated: Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 6:30 AM By Mark Dawidziak, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer Ron Brown was sitting in the bar of a Winking Lizard restaurant Sunday evening when he heard his name mentioned by an ESPN "SportsCenter" anchor. Brown, who lives in Cleveland, was sitting with his best friend, James Hill, who had invited him to the Winking Lizard on Huron Road in Cleveland. It was a setup, as Brown learned. "Well, it seems that Ron's best friend, James Hill, wrote into 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' and asked if they could hook him up with a reporting gig for his favorite sports network, ESPN," said Negandhi's co-anchor, Ryan Burr, according to a transcript provided by ESPN. "So, Ron are you watching?" He was. Negandhi then dropped the big news: "Ron Brown of Cleveland, Ohio, we're talking to you. Yes, you Ron Brown. Listen up. Here's the deal. We're sending you on assignment. You're going to interview one of the biggest stars in the NBA, Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls." "And after your interview, you're going to head back here to our ESPN anchor desk to give us the lowdown," Burr said. http://www.cleveland.com/tv-blog/index.ssf/2011/04/espn_oprah_surprise_cleveland_man_with_date_to_be_a_guest_sportscaster.html
April 22, 201114 yr Another movie announced. This one from Paramount: Nickelodeon's Victoria Justice to shoot movie comedy in Cleveland Published: Friday, April 22, 2011, 12:30 PM By Julie Washington, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer Another film -- this one starring Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice -- is planning to film in Cleveland. The untitled project is expected to hire about 500 Ohioans as production crew and extras, according to the Ohio Department of Development. Shooting should begin in late spring, with the movie landing in theaters October 2012. Justice will play a sarcastic teenager who loses her little brother when they go trick-or-treating; she must find him before their mother discovers he's missing. Actor Thomas Mann ("It's Kind of a Funny Story") is reportedly in talks to play Justice's love interest in the comedy, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The untitled comedy joins 10 other movies that have announced plans to film in this area, including the comic book movie "The Avengers" and the psychological thriller "Boot Tracks" starring Matt Dillon and Michelle Monaghan. The Ohio Department of Development has approved a $4.7 million state tax credit for Justice's movie. To date, about 15 movies have taken advantage of the tax credit. http://www.cleveland.com/movies/index.ssf/2011/04/untitled_comedy_starring_nicke.html
April 22, 201114 yr OK, here it is: Another filmmaker plans to shoot a movie in Cleveland By TIMOTHY MAGAW 1:46 pm, April 22, 2011 -- Crains "Cleveland isn't Tinseltown yet, but it could be well on its way as the state announced today another major motion picture would be filmed in the city thanks to a $4.7 million tax credit. The still-unnamed film from Paramount Pictures is set to begin shooting this spring, and is the third to be filmed in Ohio since the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit went into effect last year. The film is expected to employ about 545 Ohioans as part of the crew, according to a news release from the Ohio Department of Development...... ....The plot of the unnamed film centers on a “sarcastic teenage girl who is forced to take her little brother trick-or-treating on Halloween, then loses him and must find him before their mother finds out,” according to the release. The film will star Victoria Justice, who has made appearances in several series on the Nickelodeon cable channel, and will be directed by Josh Schwartz, creator of the teen-TV drama “The O.C.” http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20110422/FREE/110429925
April 25, 201114 yr This is actually about Akron on tv. I just saw the new Sonic (a fast food chain) commercial for their hot dogs, where they tout the Chicago or New York style dog, and then they point out Akron on the map saying it is right between NY and Chicago. The idea is which dog will those in Akron choose?
May 11, 201114 yr ^Looks like I had confirmation on that film in crain's. I had a letter this week on Paramount letterhead stuck in my front door in Lakewood that they were going to be shooting a film and were targeting neighborhood that had a John Hughes/ Sixteen candles/ Father of the Bride look for exterior shots. They were also looking for homes to be used for interior shots, and if interested to call them at such and such a number. I forget the name of the film though, hopefully the wife didn't throw out the letter. "Big Fun" is the name that is stuck in my head. I'll update the post when I can confirm the name.

May 11, 201114 yr Duh, I can't believe I just found out about this one.... Yesterday a friend of mine just asked if she could borrow a ton of record albums for wall decoration, I wondered why. Today I find she's doing set design for the above mentioned film!
May 31, 201114 yr Wow! OK, I think it's to the point Cleveland needs some converted soundstages and more movie related industry. I talked to one of the cameramen for "The Avengers" and he asked me why Cleveland doesn't have any permanent soundstages in the city. I told him we're not used to movies being filmed here. He also said that cities like Boston and Washington DC have multiple places to rent or buy equipment (lighting, camera lense filters, etc) that if they need a quick adjustment they can go buy or rent the needed stuff that day of filming. He said Cleveland seems to lack these businesses, although he did mention he'd stopped into Dodd camera. June 2, 201114 yr Could American Greetings' headquarters become a movie studio? Thursday, May 26, 2011 http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/05/could_american_greetings_headquarters_become_a_movie_studio.html BROOKLYN, Ohio -- American Greetings Corp. hasn't moved out, but the Greater Cleveland Film Commission already wants to turn the building into a movie studio. Ivan Schwarz, executive director of the Film Commission, said plans are still in the early stages, but he sees the potential to turn parts of the 1-million-square-foot corporate headquarters into a high-tech multimedia film production center. He said he would love to get started before 2014, when American Greetings is scheduled to leave. "They have a lot of space that would work perfectly for our purposes," Schwarz said. "It's a well-kept building with the potential for many different types of production and multiple uses. We could turn the warehouse into sound stages, offices into production offices and a backlot that people that could shoot in." Schwarz is headed to Los Angeles next week and wants to bring back an expert to help him evaluate the site's potential.

June 3, 201114 yr ^Great news. I heard Michigan--where Cleveland's Danny Green movie was shot (Detroit) is eliminating their movie tax credit. Not sure why. It works right?--or at least seems to be doing so for Ohio.
