Schwarz thinks that and the walking access to amenities downtown make the city a "one-stop shop" for freeway-weary filmmakers. He said he thinks all Ohio lacks for a potentially "self-fulfilling" Cleveland film industry is tax incentives for film investment, which a bill in the state legislature would provide.

Think about this as a reason for having a permanent film center in Cleveland... Where else can you be so close to such a wide variety of natural/man-made settings that offer:

+ the flat, cornfield-studded Midwest;

+ the urbanized Northeast with rail transit, University Circle architecture, large apartment buildings etc.;

+ New England in Chagrin Falls;

+ Ghettos;

+ Eastern European settings in some parts of the city;

+ a large body of water that can easily serve as an ocean setting;

+ hilly, riverside industrial areas;

+ Appalachia (see the Cuyahoga Valley just north of downtown Akron);

+ plus all four seasons? ? ?

Perhaps the only settings we can't offer are tropical, mountainous or desert -- but all can be simulated with green screens in the Convention Center and some CG!

All very good points, and don't forget about the sunsets over Lake Erie that could also pass for California or the West coast.

Hot dog!!

Maybe my dream of dating Kate Hudson will be fufilled yet!

edit: ALSO, maybe this is what we can do with the old convention center if we build a new one somewhere else. Seems like a good trade off to me!

OT...but where do you build it?  we should be thinking OUTSIDE THE BOX and building this as a PART of the convention center itself.

Filmmakers Say Hooray for Cleveland

IF asked to name a budding film community, most people would not put Cleveland first on the list, or even second or third. But one of the few loft developments in the country geared toward filmmakers and animators is located in an old working-class neighborhood of Cleveland called Slavic Village.

....

well thats quite a nice write up

that was outright exciting to read and in the end quite a huge pr air kiss for clevo.

can we clone 100 david perkowski's?

Outstanding! Wouldn't it be great to have more building rehabs like Hyacinth Lofts, especially downtown near the convention center. If that's not going to be our convention center in the future, and major filmmaking will be its reuse, then we need more facilities like Hyacinth Lofts downtown. If I were an aspiring filmmaker, I would love to be within walking distance of a place where major filmmaking is being done. There might be subcontracting opportunities, chances to schmooze and share inspiration and ideas. Of course, isn't being a site of meeting and exchange why cities were invented in the first place?

yea this is all so cool, like subsidized housing for artists! I see Payne Sterling/China Town as having a ton of potential to grow in this area. And the fact that peoples work and living space is steps away is amazing and as we know, the trend of the future. Most filmmakers in LA or NY do not have that privilege.  I am sorry the link does not work, but this may show up in the PD at some point although it may put Cleveland in too positive a light for its readers, so we may not see it.  I especially love the steel mill smoke stack described as a "tapering candlestick" . As unfortunate as the pollution that is created by the factory is, it illustrates Cleveland is still a working city maintaining its industrial edge.

Great exposure!

If I had any sort of film skillz, I'd love to do a movie on Elliot Ness and the Torso Murders - a period thriller filmed locally.

Certainly, we need to see more projects like this, particularly projects that provide amenities for different niches of artists. But let's not forget that Cleveland is already quietly building a large artist-led re-use movement. Cleveland's Live Work Overlay District, which allows individuals to live in buildings that have been zoned commercial, stretches from E. 18th to Addison (E. 65) along St. Clair, E. 17th to E. 55th along Superior, and E. 17th to E. 45th along Payne.

While the District doesn't provide protection against eviction (the city's ordinance is trumped by state building codes and health codes), it has spurred a lot of artist-oriented units across the Near East side. In addition to Perkowski's outstanding work at Tower Press and Hyacinth, you'll find artists living or working at the Heller Building (Superior and 22nd), the Artcraft Building (Superior and 25th), the 1400 Building (St. Clair and 30th), Tyler Village (Superior in the upper 30s), Shovelworks (Payne and 40th) and Loftworks (Payne and 40th). Two churches in the neighborhood have also been converted to artist space - Old Red Church (Superior and 24th) and Josaphat Arts Hall (Superior and E. 33rd). And this is just a partial list; a fairly good overview can be found at http://www.cityartistsatwork.org/buildings.htm.

I really think that this neighborhood is going to pop once people realize just how much in-migration is occurring right now.

Ms. Chamberlain (ex Clevelander and Free Times editor) redeems herself after the dour article she wrote for the Times last year on the Cleveland real estate market!

Really great stuff.

well that sure was a nice read.

Cool

That was pleasent to read.

I didn't realize she was the same writer. Agreed -- a nice bit of redemption.

what was her story in the times about?

much of the rest of the country (bubble markets like cali, vegas & az) is soon going to be in worse shape than cleveland when it comes to real estate, imo.

at any rate, i was SO happy to see this filmmaking story!!!

the only downside i can see is that they will have to cgi in blue skies for the typical london-ish gray/white skies.  :wink:

Well, I beat her to the punch (http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=7974.0), but my readership is limited to you people, so I'm glad she picked up on the story!  It is, by the way, an incredible story and one that continues to develop and inspire!

^I don't think the point is who broke the story... it's that it's in the New York Times.

I was JOKING!  [sheesh]

Not sure if this deserves its own thread yet but thought people might be interested to hear that Perkowski is now marketing units in The Bloch Building (2310 Superior Avenue), just down the street from Tower Press. http://www.tremontlofts.com/blochbuilding/.

It looks like the building is more oriented toward commercial space than Tower Press or Hyacinth Lofts but still geared toward creative workers/businesses.

I know I'm a bit of a broken record, but I really think the rehab of these warehouses along Superior, coupled with some considerable in-migration, is undercovered by the media. I would bet that at least three dozen warehouses within the Live Work Overlay District now have some artist presence in them. Time to market nationally?

Great news, 8Shades!  Seriously, those on the inside know about this stuff, but the broader audience has no idea that all of this is happening!  And yes, this stuff should be drawing talented people on a much wider scale.  You know what they say, though, outside investment follows inside investment.  (sound familiar to any of you?) With all the local developers building this momentum right now, it's only a matter of time before some national attention starts to manifest itself!

I absolutely agree, but I'm speaking more toward a national demand-side campaign. Getting the word out to artists and arts-based businesses about the agglomeration that is occurring, coupled with the range of amenities available to local artists. Anectdotally, I have heard of a number of artists from both coasts who've been amazed with what Cleveland offers for artists, particularly given the cost to rent or own (much like the sentiments noted in The Times article above).

yea i've been in that neighborhood a lot and it seems to have such a different feel to it even from a few years ago.  i even noticed that Tyler Village seems to have a whole floor being remodeled with new windows from that new tech company from beechwood

Well, if Euclid Avenue could pass for NYC, it should be able to pass for Cleveland, right?

Seriously, though, a lot of the locations depicted in the graphic novel (which is superb, by the way) still exist.  The arcades, for one.  City Hall, the County Courthouse.  Does the original coroner's office still exist?  I don't think so.  What about the police precinct on Payne?  Anyway, I think they can work some of it.  If they really want to, that is.

I think I'm going to fire off an email to Chris Carmody at the CFC to get on the horn to Bill Mechanic and start convincing him that Cleveland still looks enough like Cleveland to represent Cleveland (even seventy years removed) in the movie about one of the most compelling stories that ever came from Cleveland! :? :? :?

Start the movie out with the famous shooting that missed Elliot Ness and put the bullet holes behind the bar at GLBC

we had some visititors from Sweden that LOVED that bullet hole and great lakes. they took a bunch of pictures and then at a nearby table met a guy whose dad was Elliot ness' cousin. you would think they met a major celeb. too fun.

not much is left of kingsbury run and surrounding neighborhoods

True, but much of what was involved in the Torso Murders was a Depression-era shantytown. It was made out of boxes, shipping crates, and sheds. That's pretty easy to duplicate. And the reason why none of the shantytown exists anymore is because Ness "lost it" and burned it all to the ground.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

^^ The Film Commission has the premier scheduled at 3:30. Could be an outdated post, but probably better to arrive too early for the show than too late ... unless you're inclined to skip the rather long "Support the Cinematheque" talk that often precedes their showings.

Although its not a movie, I, er.... rather my crib might be on TV!

Sweet!  When and where and why?  Cleveland or NYC?

Sweet!  When and where and why?  Cleveland or NYC?

Not sure.  I'm pretty sure it was late year.  Two best friends, my cousin and I sent some pictures to A&E as they were looking at developing a new show called "trash to treasure" or "one persons trash is another persons treasure"...something along those lines.

I have a lot of pieces in my apartments in Cleveland and LA that I found on peoples tree lawns, Flea Markets, Antique Stores or off to the side of the road.  So I emailed some pics of the cribs and told them that most of the time, if I see something, I'll pull over the car over check it out and if I think I can "make it work", I throw in the car..take it to my parents house and refurubish it.  I sent them picture of my office - Every thing except the desk was found on peoples tree lawns in shaker or cleveland hts; My second guest room - I bought these turn of the century head/foot boards for $15;  My old foyer table I found on 117 & Cromwell ( I think it came from the inside of Halles);  A mirror I found by Belgian Village, when I was out for a jog; In my bedroom, I have a deco chair i found on Street near WLA College and some acrycilic tables and in on my patio/backyard two stone dogs that were on the I 110 with a bunch of other stone/marble piece.  I'm so sure that stuff was stolen...so i might not want to put that on the air.  I think I even included my bedroom at my parents house.

So, they sent me an email yesterday saying they are interested in hearing more.  I'm waiting to hear back.  I'll post some pictures of the stuff, if I can remember what I sent later

the shaker heights movie sounds cool. does chad lowe  have a connection to the area? He was here a lot the last election. I was a volunteer for moveon.org and J.kerry ( :cry:)  and went to a rally in CH and he and robert redford were there.

  my two cents, careful about curb and dumpster diving. I am hearing bedbugs are coming back strong and some of the stuff thrown out may be thrown out b/c of infestation. Of course I have a few thrift pieces myself so I am not that scared!

Chad Lowe is from Dayton, so there is an Ohio connection (though opposite side of the state).

No mattresses, bedding or anything like that.  The chairs I had completely reupholstered.  Most of this stuff is completely good stuff - solid wood.  Shaker & Cleveland hts residents are famous for tossing out good pieces.  Any day you can drive down Fairmont, S. Woodland, S. Park, W. Park, N. Park, Shelbo urn and see good furniture on the tree lawn - I've been doing it for years and mixing it in with newer furniture.

East Blvd., Wade Park B'way or Quincy are also good places to find stuff.

I have a lot of pieces in my apartments in Cleveland and LA

Damn MTS! How many cities do you have apartments in? I gathered there was NYC and Cleveland of course, but LA too? Wow! Hope your company that keeps you bopping around the country is picking up the tab!

Only three, Cleveland, New York and Los Angeles.  Although, I'm always looking for another good investment!!

My brother and I bought this place as an investment to "flip" but decided to keep it as he was traveling back and forth to LA quite a bit.  Its become convienient as I've had to go to LA 3 time this month and its close the airport, my offices and except the Burbank studio.  :whip:  Also, its nice for my parents when they want to get away - they can just pack some clothes and head for the airport or the same for Brother and his family.  And there has only been once or twice when we've all been there at the same time and its cozy.

I can't find all the pictures...I originally submitted, but here are a few. http:

LA Bedroom - Chair & ottoman $75, lamp $0.00 found in house, was white stained choc., Acrylic tables $20, Faux Rug at a yard sale $35

LABedroom01.jpg

LA Patio - Found those puppies on the side of the highway $0.00.  I was having a NY Public Library moment.

LAGarden01.jpg

Old Foyer Pic - I found the table on the street $0.00, the "hope diamond" paper weight $7, the Mirror $25, the Horns $0.00 from a SOHIO Rodeo event in Houston...Don't ask  :roll:.  This was inspired by a bad Dynasty episode.

OldFoyer.jpg

A few of these things I loaned to a friend, who apartment was damaged by a fire

the circular table I found on a tree lawn on Courtland or Fairmont.  the blue chairs I think I bought on Larchmere for like $100, the mirror was my best ever find at $5.

antiques.jpg

My home office

The chair on the left was found in the trash, the desk was $300 on larchmere, the white chair was $50, and the File organizer was $80.  stripped them, slapped on some new fabric, which was the inspiration for the room

Guest Bedroom -3

I found the headboard on a tree lawn, the screen was $40 at a yard sale and I think I found the mirror on Quincy.

Wow, screw Trash to Treasure... you should host your own show!

Wow, this became the "Be Jealous of MTS's Life" thread.  MTS, I hope you're short or bald or something. ;)

Wow, screw Trash to Treasure... you should host your own show!

I'm affraid of TV...I can't do live Broadcast.  I become instantly numb, dumb, stupid and tongue tied.  I've been to TV classes, sat with Anderson, Larry and Soledad as well as a few others and I just can't do it.  I prefer to be "behind" the scenes.  I guess it goes to show you can't get rid of childhood insecurities....

Don't hate...participate!  :-D LOL  Trust me, I'm a firm believer that you do not have to spend alot of money to live well.  Luckily I've been blessed and I bought my place in Cleveland for next to nothing and I don't have a mortgage, unlike my friends who waited until the 90's to buy homes!  :-P  :-P

Short? Ummm...I'm  6'4" and change (I'm the shortest man on my moms side of the family) with a head full of hair.  Although I wish I was much shorter, I wouldn't have to endear so much ridicule.  :cry:  :cry:

Get nervous on TV? Hell, that's why they invented print reporters like me! I gotta do a program about el cheapo interior decorating that looks like a million bucks. And what you've done looks priceless, MTS!

Thanks.  Yes TV gives me the heebbie geebies, I'm really shy and have pretty much been a loner.  I prefer to blend into the background, but unfortunately...I can always be spotted.

As MayDay would say, "my people" have a sixth sense when it comes to fashion, art, decorating and beauty.  I suggest you check out the antique stores on the westside as the "kids" in the lakewood & edgewater areas probably have some amazing pieces in those fabulous apartments!  Or check out spots where people on the westside throw out piece they "think" are no longer useful.  I hear Clifton, Madison, Hilliard & Franklin are good places to dumpster dive!

Outside of your readership, but, there is a part of Lorain where you can get some good pieces, along with Puritas & Kamms Corners and somewhere on Bagley.  Kent, Aurora, Hudson & Chagrin Falls are also good spots to find stuff.

I...rather my mom and my apartment wont be on TV.  They wanted an apartment that had items and they would refurbish, and help with redesign, etc.

I suggested that they add in segments about people who have already done stuff like this and high light the places they shop, as I wanted them to expose the larchmere strip since I get alot of stuff there.

Oh well...maybe next time...

WOW!  That's one (or is it two) beautiful apartment.  That painting in the bedroom is awesome.  I would love to see that on TV.  I think the foyer looks more Dallas than Dynasty  . :lol:
