March 27, 20178 yr Hot in Cleveland was not shot here. I mean, a few exteriors, yeah. Neither was Drew Carey. I think you're overestimating the number of films set in Cleveland, and not understanding how sites are selected for filming, which is a complicated numbers game decided by directors and studio executives. It's nothing personal for or against a particular city. It's about budget and resources and tax incentives. Films set in various countries in Europe are rarely shot where the thing is actually set. Most of it is in a studio in LA and the exteriors are for whatever passes for X location but was cheaper and easier to get. If you want more films to be shot here, wherever they are set, we need even more incentives, and we need a studio size space for interiors because our ability to handle exteriors is extremely iffy because of our unpredictable weather.
March 27, 20178 yr Keep in mind that one of the most iconic movies of the last fifty years wasn’t set here but was shot here. They made no bones about it early on either, featuring what during the story’s era was the tallest building in the world off Manhattan Island.
March 27, 20178 yr http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/UsefulNotes/Cleveland Probably not a complete list but it does try. TV Tropes is a nice website to get lost in if you're into movies/books/games/TV or just storytelling techniques in general.

Even if it was a few exteriors (and its undeniable that for "Hot in Cleveland," at least, the opening shot featured downtown Cleveland -- and GLBC got a bunch of exterior shots, too), there's something to be said about a movie shot here, even if minimally, about Cleveland. It would be nice if we had a major film like, say, Flash Dance which showed of Pittsburgh... "The Land" did this very well. Of course it was an Indie and directed by a guy who is from here and loves Cleveland, and his local exteriors and sets clearly depicted a love for Cleveland... I guess that's what it takes and, I supposed, doesn't happen that often... One of the Russo brother's (also natives) early films was "Welcome to Collinwood" which was shot on location and had some big-time actors, like William H. Macy and George Clooney... Once they got big, the Russos returned with "Capt. America, Winter Soldier" (good movie) with many Cleveland shots -- I applaud them and give them a bye, because D.C. Comics, from whom the Russo's adapted, didn't set this story in Cleveland. Again it's not a federal issue with me, I just choose not to get bent out of shape with excitement when Matthew McConaughey is here to film a movie set in another place -- especially when its supposed to highlight a struggling neighborhood to begin with.
March 28, 20178 yr For the record, Major League was not filmed in Cleveland due to shadow issues and football lines with the stadium. Production costs/union issues were also factors. It wasn't a slight to the city I was just about to point this out until I saw your post. Thanks for saving me the effort!

March 28, 20178 yr "Kill The Irishman", the movie about Danny Greene, was set in Cleveland but filmed in Detroit. Right. And that was mainly due to Michigan having a higher ceiling for tax credits, otherwise it likely would have been filmed in Cleveland.

March 28, 20178 yr Real progress on a movie based on the Cleveland Torso Murders: http://www.avclub.com/article/paul-greengrass-direct-eliot-ness-biopic-based-gra-252801 'Torso' comics series to become movie called 'Ness' by Jason Bourne director By Michael Sangiacomo, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on March 28, 2017 at 7:55 AM, updated March 28, 2017 at 11:28 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Paul Greengrass has agreed to direct the movie "Ness," based on the comic series "Torso" by former Clevelander Brian Bendis and Mentor native Marc Andreyko. And if Bendis and Andreyko have their way, a large part of it will be filmed in Cleveland. "The great thing is that I did not even have to pitch filming in Cleveland," said Bendis from his home in Portland. "The line producers have already been to the city scouting out locations. The plan is to shoot exteriors in Cleveland and interiors in the United Kingdom." http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/03/torso_comics_series_to_become.html

March 29, 20178 yr Yes, I know all about the Torso murders, I was in a film about them myself back in the day. Wheels of pre-pro turn slowly. I'm sure I'll find out when they're going to shoot here but I wouldn't expect it to be any time soon.

March 29, 20178 yr who handles the equipment and trailer rentals and all that stuff when they film these movies in cleveland? is it haddad's? they seem to carry the bulk of that business around nyc, but i notice they arent the only ones: http://www.haddadsinc.com/about.php what about catering? i imagine that is handled locally? does that vary a lot or does the equipment rental vendor handle it and use the same caterers? it always looks very standardized at the ny shoots.
March 29, 20178 yr All of this varies depending on the production manager and director. Some people literally want everything brought in from elsewhere. Literally every lick of lighting and sound gear can be shipped in from LA. They have extremely good deals at rental houses out there and there are so many because the competition is so stiff that it can be cheaper to rent everything from an LA place and ship it here than to rent here. Catering also varies. There's no logic to it. Sometimes it's a lot of local, sometimes they will bring in places from neighboring states. There are certainly local outfits that become known and are used again and again. Same with select crew. Like there's a guy who is known to be a Steadicam operator here, he regularly works on films that come through because that's a specialty skill. Some directors are only comfortable using the entirety of a crew that they've used on other films and will just request all those people be brought here.
March 29, 20178 yr i see -- thanks for explaining. i always wonder about all that when i walk by these shoots and see the staff working them.
March 29, 20178 yr I mean, it would be nice if productions used all-local everything when they go some place, but movies are very expensive to make and if it's a big studio backing it, there is an extreme discouragement against anything risky, they are very, very risk-averse, especially if it will cost the production money, or even worse, in safety. There are a lot of regulations and classes required to be a unionized crew member. And there's a lot of skill and things that distinguish one working professional from the other. If you're a producer or director, are you going to want to put your whole production into the hands of people you "think should know" what to do, or are you going to bring crew you've worked with before, who can set up anywhere, in any town, any time, for any duration, who have already proved that they know what to do and they get things done expeditiously, correctly and cautiously. Building a reputation that people who work here know what they're doing and can be relied upon is literally person by person and requires year over year of repeated work. Yeah, it's going to make more sense to hire the seasoned location scout and fixer that's a Clevelander if you are shooting in Cleveland, but if you've worked with a camera operator who understands what you want with little direction and conversation because they've shot for you before, you're bringing them with you, not hiring some guy you don't know in CLE.
March 29, 20178 yr yeah, i would imagine some things are ok for local and some are not -- and you want your familiar crew when you can get it. and no doubt its hard to earn a reputation far from hollywood. just an observation from walking by the ny street shoots, but it always seems like the majority of the staff people you see there are early 20-something film school types holding clipboards and the like. i imagine as generally the work is sporadic you would have to have to have side work and to be very flexible, so maybe that makes sense? it looks like a tough business, but very interesting none the less and it always catches your attention and makes you think about it when you see it. a lot of people complain when there is a ny location shoot because of the disruption, but that is mostly because of losing parking. i dont have a car anymore, so shoots dont bother me at all. i do miss the 80s-90s days shoots tho, when they would leave the catering table out so people walking by could take stuff. nowadays the catering is mostly holed up out of reach inside tents or trailers. ha.
April 25, 20178 yr Movie Co-Starring Matthew McConaughey to Begin Filming in Lakewood Lights. Camera. …Lakewood! Part of Downtown Lakewood will be transformed into a Hollywood film shoot, with the action slated to begin Monday, April 24. The film, yet to be given a title, stars Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bruce Dern, among others. The movie tells the true story of Richard Wershe Jr., who in mid-1980s Detroit at the age of only 14 became an undercover informant for local and federal law enforcement agencies and then established himself as a major drug dealer. The story follows that time of the boy’s life as well as the relationship with his blue-collar father, portrayed by McConaughey. Kevin Foster, the assistant location manager for the film, said that Rust Belt cities of Cleveland and Detroit share many similar characteristics, noting that Lakewood was a perfect fit. “This is an ideal situation,” he said. “We’re happy to have this opportunity to film in Lakewood.” MORE: http://www.onelakewood.com/movie-co-starring-matthew-mcconaughey-to-begin-filming-in-lakewood/
April 25, 20178 yr I want to be in a Bruce Willis movie 8-) It actually sounds like a really interesting plot and good idea for an action film. Bruce Willis’s new movie “Acts of Violence” is now casting talent to work on scenes filming in and around Cleveland, Ohio. The movie follows two vigilante brothers who infiltrate a human trafficking ring to extricate a loved one. Epps will co-star as head bad guy Max Livingston, who leads a human-trafficking ring and is pursued by Detective Avery (Willis). May 1, 20178 yr Well, give Matthew credit for finding the coolest place in town. Yep, that was Matthew McConaughey at Lakewood bowling alley CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Matthew McConaughey took a break from filming "White Boy Rick" for a little bowling on Sunday. The Oscar-winning actor showed up at Mahall's 20 Lanes in Lakewood sporting a glorious 1980s mustache and wearing a hat that said "Alright," a nod to his signature catchphrase, "Alright, alright, alright." The bowling alley, which doubles as a bar and music venue, posted a photo of McConaughey on Facebook, writing he dropped by with some friends. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2017/05/yep_that_was_matthew_mcconaugh.html
May 3, 20178 yr Did you guys know about this? It just popped up on my Facebook news feed out of nowhere; live footage from WKYC. They're setting up the set in Public Square for the show American Ninja Warrior. I've seen clips of the show; it's actually sort of entertaining. Athletes going through a crazy obstacle course. Pretty cool that they're doing it in Public Square of all places. Is traffic downtown, around the square especially bad, due to this?
May 3, 20178 yr I knew about it. My son loves this show and I was super excited when I heard it was coming here but unfortunately they won't let anyone under 12 in.

May 31, 20178 yr Elliot Ness stories are so overblown, if not entirely fabricated. Elliot Ness was an attention-seeking media whore. During prohibition, he would call the media and tell them to show up at the site where he was about to raid Capone's bootlegging operations. He'd wait until the media had everything set up to take pictures of the raid before busting down the door and by that point, everyone inside had already fled. He had almost nothing to do with bringing down Capone and he didn't solve the Torso murders case. Unless they're going to show him burning a shanty town to the ground in a fit of rage, where the murders happened and considering that case-closed, it's going to be horribly inaccurate. I never understood Elliot Ness' hero status and glorification. I noticed Elliot Ness' grave stone in Lakeview Cemetery a couple weeks ago. There was an Elliot Ness beer on his grave lol.
May 31, 20178 yr ^You know, a movie about the "real" Elliot Ness and his media-whore antics would probably be really fun to watch. You should sell that script to someone! “To an Ohio resident - wherever he lives - some other part of his state seems unreal.”
May 31, 20178 yr Eliot Ness' greatest successes were actually in Cleveland before the Torso murders. He was a very effective safety director for the city. He cleaned up a corrupt Police Department and turned it into a professional law enforcement agency. What Eliot Ness was not able to do was to be an investigator which he tried in vain to be in investigating the Torso murders. It ultimately did drive him to drink and got him a one-way ticket out of town after twice running for mayor and failing. May 31, 20178 yr the elliot ness story isn't about his arrests, its about how he used pr in a modern way to fight crime. and he was genius at it for awhile.

June 2, 20178 yr The real story of Eliot Ness is tragic one (and also very comical and ironic at the end.) I watched a documentary on his life, being a media whore, having his own accomplishments overblown and taking credit for a lot of major things he shouldn't have - a borderline fraud. Also how he turned into a hard-core alcoholic at the end and having a lot of skeletons in his closet. The documentary had a lot of historians and even close friends and insiders who were still alive after his death. His true story would make for a great drama (with a lot of comedy in between!) Yet very tragic at the end. Overall, he did have an interesting life. I just hate when TV shows/movies portray things as real when they weren't. They end up doing history a disservice, I think. He did modernize the police force in many innovative ways. It's pretty cool that Cleveland led the country in that regard (although it's ironic that Clevleand currently has one of the least modern police forces in America right now.) He's the reason why we have internal affairs Depts and forensics. Too bad we don't have a modern day Eliot Ness here. I'm sure there's a lot of corruption to be exposed.

July 17, 20177 yr Alternative Press Music Awards tonight: Despite venue change, APMAs aim for local and global domination Updated on July 17, 2017 at 8:18 AM Last year's APMAs reached over 500,000 viewers around the world via Amazon Music and its official Twitch channel. The show hopes to double, if not triple, that number this year with a venue more befitting an awards show. The genesis for the idea took place several months ago when Shea began examining made-for-TV events like the Grammys and the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. He wanted to emulate their flashy camera angles, smooth flow and eye-popping visuals that grab you on TV. "With the move to State Theatre, it's very much like the Tony Awards now in a way," says Shea. August 16, 20177 yr We were there that night. We were sitting in the top row of the bleachers and my son, who is a big Moravsky fan, had a sign for him. He was standing behind us with a couple other competitors talking and my son showed him his sign. He climbed up to our seats, signed my son's sign and then hung out with us for a little while watching some of the earlier ninjas compete, and telling us about what they were doing right / wrong, and about how the competition works, generally. He's a nice guy and it was a real treat for my kids. Also, it was cold as hell that night. I can't imagine what it felt like falling into the water.
August 17, 20177 yr We got VIP tickets so we were there both nights. First night we were there until about 1am. The second night we had to bail at around 11:30 because the kids were tired and they had school the next day.
