Well I say it was pretty good. They stuck to downtown and didn't get into any hoods, but that was cool. Good to see the city shown in a positive light and the lawyer who took the job in Cleveland who "bought a house he could afford." reflected a real life growing trend of people moving from the coast to more affordable places.

We can rest easy and not have to go into damage control mode this time.

Shoutouts galore!  Aside from a couple digs about weight and "everyone's a model west of the Allegheny", it was a fun and unoffensive episode.  The above mentioned stock footage, transitioning (via pink hearts) to on-the-street scenes of Tina and Jason's characters interacting with stereotypically friendly midwesterners, all set to what I think was an original song they wrote for the episode, a jazzy loungy-type number praising the town.  The sequence can be seen at http://www.nbc.com/30_Rock/video/#mea=92846

Liz: "What smells so good?"

Floyd (inhales): "Cleveland!"

Jack: "Where have you been?"

Liz (dreamy): "Cleveland!"

Jack: "For God's sakes, Lemon, we'd all like to flee to The Cleve, and club-hop down at the Flats and have lunch with Little Richard.  But we fight those urges, because we have responsibilities. "

Floyd: "It was a crazy idea to begin with.  We were on a vacation high..."

Liz: "Exactly!  It's like a drug."

Floyd: "Right.  If the whole world moved to their favorite vacation spots, then the whole world would live in Hawaii, and Italy, and Cleveland."

Liz: "Totally!"

We've been treated worse.  :-P

DAMN!! I MISSED IT!!! ANY RERUNS POSSIBLE SOON???

I think the episode is available on www.NBC.com / itunes after 2 AM

I thought it was great -- the lyrics to the song playing in the background while they were in "The Cleve" were hilarious!

Talk about coincidences.... My sister just called me and said there was a neat show on NBC that I would like. Turns out it was the same show, and she has Tivo! So she's making a copy of it for me.

They also added this little interactive map on NBC's website...

KJP, are you OK?  we already saw that map, you're usually much quicker...you feeling ok?

There you go Cleveland... Your image is not as dark as you all may think.

I had friends from South America, South Florida, Cleveland & Columbus that got together to watch the show at my house.

My South Amerian friends are intrigued with talk of Parma (good lord)...

I will be in Cleveland this weekend and Pittsburgh the following to see my family...  8-)

I'm loving all the postive comments.

They are also in the process of posting two more "Cleveland" movie clips on the website.

LOL. I just don't watch TV much at all (aside from Weather Channel, CNN Headline in the a.m. [i'm in love with Robin, who's from NE Ohio], Law & Order reruns, and the occasional Cavs/Indians/Browns game). So I had no idea what 30 Rock is or what the discussion was about.

30 Rock writer, producer and actor Tina Fey, it turns out, has a Northeast Ohio connection in her husband Jeff Richmond, who attended Kent State University and is a producer and composer on the series.

Turns out my sister went to Kent with Jeff. They were both in the Music-and-Speech program together. Small world.

Damn that's some good music.

I just looked on the NBC map. I've probably been driving past it for years, but I didn't know we have a Women's Air and Space Museum!

^ ditto

It's amazing all the naysaying that was going on about this episode before it even came out, and how it could only be bad.  This seems to be way too typical of us C-towners and Ohio residents.  I thought the show was funny, light hearted and really a positive portrayal of Cleveland.  It would be nice if all of us could see Cleveland in the same light as was "portrayed" in the show.

Go Cleveland

^^ & ^^^ It's inside Burke Lakefront Airport. While I knew it was there, I had never been inside until about a month ago. It's a small but interesting collection.

And that was great! Granted, it was very tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top, but I really enjoyed it, and outside of a shot of a highway cloverleaf, it was pretty nice stock footage too.

I have to agree - Cleveland has produced a lot of great comics (from Bob Hope to Molly Shannon), but for some reason a lot of Clevelanders have lost a sense of humor and more importantly the ability to laugh at ourselves.

It made we want to visit, for what that's worth.

Lawd!

Hopefully the marketing campaign being launched in 6 days can build on this positive momentum. I hope its an entertaining and informative and not boring and informative like those Michigan adds. Cramer where are u from?

OBSERVATION

This is not a dig at anyone, but some of the comments made by posters are clear examples of the wonderful things Cleveland has to offer and the lack of a PR strategy.

When you're own citizens, especially those interested in improving the urban fabric of the city, don't know about a major (albeit small) museum, how can you expect suburbanites, regional/exurb residents, visitors & event planners, etc. to know about it??

Cramer where are u from?

Cincinnati.

I honestly can't remember the last time I was in Cleveland. Must have been the late 80s.

An edited version of that ep should be made into the tourism spot. You've already got a catchy tune. Of course, I'm a huge 30 Rock fan.

I've never watched the show before, but I enjoyed it - besides it being funny, I think what it said about Cleveland was great...

So we're a bit overweight, we're friendlier than everyone else

So sometimes you can smell the Cuyahoga, you can afford to live here and go to see Tribe games & the RRHOF

I say roll with this - we know some of our worst traits, but let's laugh them off and enjoy the great publicity.

Hey now - I have been busting my arse on the elliptical three times a week for six months in anticipation of swimsuit season! Grrrr...

Seriously though, I thought it was great - although the skyline shot that goes from day to night was from 1991 - Key Tower was just getting finished.

It made we want to visit, for what that's worth.

Cramer, you can pet a real police horse in Cincinnat, y'know.

They mentioned Parma? LMFAO. How can the Cleveland area be mentioned WITHOUT Parma. :)

If you go to that NBC link you can see the show and read people's comments about it. There are a few negative, but most seem to be pretty positive.

well this is my formal apology to tina fey. it wasn't a love letter, but it was harmless fun. i enjoyed it. i know its harder to do, but it proved you can be very funny w/o being mean too. good for them. if anything mean at all in it was a rip on ny'ers not clevo.

fwiw since nothing was filmed in clev other than the stock footage i took a look at the link and the only scene i recognized was that the "are you a model?...you should eat something" scene was shot on the brooklyn heights promenade.

parma came off a lot better on 30 rock than it did a few years ago on mtv real world nyc (of course to this day i think they set up that naive clueless redneck parma kid on purpose).

ps -- speaking of ohio on tv does anyone watch on cable national geographic channel? they have a show called 'naked science' and they had an episode called 'dino meteor' i saw where at the end they counted off the effects (in sloooow motion from ground zero moving outward) of a theoretical killer meteor that hit dead center in columbus, ohio -- yikes! that caught me off guard and was creepy.

Interesting. I've never heard urban sprawl described like that before! poke.gif

except you would beg for the days of urban sprawl if that actually happened!

You sure? Who can tell the difference anyway??

quite sure. they said all of ohio would be gone in seconds.....and then it just gets worse from there. even the worst sprawl developers cant move that fast.

Then why is it, darn it, that some big city TV producer had to spin such a sweet, clever tale that could have been done locally? its a dichotomy for sure. Flee to the Cleve. I just love that!

As a side note, I saw the Womens Air and Space Museum location this weekend. I was riding down Marginal Road and there it was, right by Burke Lakefront!

Next Episode of 30 Rock -- "Hiatus:"  Maybe at least one more shout out to C-town?

"As TGS' summer hiatus approaches, Liz deals with the difficulties of her long-distance relationship with Floyd while she enlists Kenneth's help in locating on-the-lam Tracy. Meanwhile, Jack's impending marriage to Phoebe brings his mother, Colleen Donaghy, to town."

Thought it was quite a money pit, Ed and Kathryn Farris got an amazing return on their investment in a 1903 bank. Bob and Cathy Collier put in a lot of all-nighters renovating an 1878 brick school that had sat empty for nearly 60 years. A Non-Spider Film Shot In Cle? You bet. The completely OH-based Precinct 13 production of Robert Kurtzman's The Rage is getting some buzz in Fangoria magazine.   Don't forget the parks and residential near such red light district. Brilliant I say!

Anyone know what the film production crew was doing at Shell station at the corner of West 117th Street and Clifton Boulevard Friday morning (June 29)? It was a pretty sophisticated operation, with digital recording equipment, white screening, a large cast, one of those small refuse trucks Lakewood has and police protection?

Carmody wasn't the most accessible guy I've come across. The least the guy could do is return my phone calls for articles I was working on. Hopefully his replacement will be more accessible.

It's good that Ivan Schwarz seems to have lots of Hollywood experience, too, which is really good. And probably pretty necessary.

Hopefully Carmody will continue to reap benefits for Ohio in whatever he pursues next. Hopefully it's not just a lot of talk and not a lot of action.
