Posted June 11, 20232 yr Udine, picturesque city near the Slovenian border and the traditional capital of Friuli. First, a few pictures from Aquilea. This was one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire in the 2nd century. It was largely destroyed by the Huns in the late empire. It’s thought the refugees from the surrounding area eventually founded Venice in the 7th century. Not much survives from antiquity, but the spectacular 4th century mosaic floors of the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta have been preserved. The basilica also has some remarkable 11th century frescoes On to Udine and the Piazza della Liberta. One of the most beautiful squares in a country comprised entirely of beautiful squares The main piazza, Giacomo Matteotti Around town Udine was ruled by Venice for 300+ years so you’ll see lots of the lion of Saint Mark
