Stern questions Seattle's commitment to Sonics Associated Press NEW YORK -- David Stern gave another warning that the SuperSonics could eventually leave Seattle, saying Thursday that the city is, "not interested in having the NBA there." The NBA commissioner also touched on the situations regarding the Trail Blazers and Hornets during a conference call, but his strongest words were saved for the Sonics' future in Seattle. Stern has said the Sonics' lease with the city is the worst in the NBA, and he went to Seattle in February to ask Washington state lawmakers for tax money to renovate Key Arena.
April 14, 200619 yr NOPE! I don't think there is a chance! But , hey, have you heard - the Cavs are in the playoffs! he he he

April 14, 200619 yr The Monroe area is the perfect location. what, does monroe have a good chicken and chili restaurant? otherwise, it would be awful, governor
April 15, 200619 yr ^Why would Charlotte be looking to move?? That's same thing I was wondering... they're only in their second season and they're playing in a brand new arena.

April 16, 200619 yr Aren't you the people bitching about a soccer stadium in Richfield? And I would go to a hockey game in Cleveland but...oh wait... "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
April 16, 200619 yr Aren't you the people bitching about a soccer stadium in Richfield? And I would go to a hockey game in Cleveland but...oh wait... Soccer althought gaining popularity, it is still "second tier sport" in the states (along with Hockey, Auto Racing, Country Club Sports (Golf, Tennis & Cricket). If, in the past, you were to attend a hockey game in Cleveland, you would have been able to sit in permium seating ALONE as our minor league team probably drew less attendence than a high school team in the metro Cleveland area. So Cbus can have its lil hockey franchise! :-P
April 16, 200619 yr Maybe it's time for Ohio State to take back what was originally theirs. I think I'd prefer TOSU-C over CSU. :-P

April 17, 200619 yr At one time or another there was a business man from Las Vegas (originally from Cincy) who had the dream of bringing an NBA franchise to Cincinnati. That was the reasoning for those exhibition games Cincy saw for a few years (testing the market). I dont feel that there is any realistic chance (Cincy is a college Bball town) but who knows if someone has money and determination anything is possible.
April 17, 200619 yr Umm Columbus doesn't have major league franchises besides NHL, but they were able to PRIVATELY finance an arena district and they have the best economy out of the three biggest cities in Ohio so I think you should all quit ragging on Columbus. Its lack of Pro sports just boosts morale for the sports they do have. The way Columbus is expanding (even the inner core seems to be seeing a lot of construction and gentrification) in the next 20 years It's probably going to be a lot bigger and they'll have no choice but to consider Columbus as a good market for more pro sports, even though Cinci and Cleveland are already saturated.
April 17, 200619 yr ^ Are you sure about that? Even if Cincinnati has produced more job than Columbus recently? Since 2000 Columbus has produced 15.3k jobs while Cincinnati has produced 25.3 k http://data.bls.gov/PDQ/outside.jsp?survey=sm

April 19, 200619 yr That's what it reflects. So Cincinnati could have lost 20k job but gained 45k, gaining a net of 25k jobs. of course i don't know what the true number of jobs that's been lost though.
April 20, 200619 yr snap again. :x I thought I saw something stating otherwise but oh well. Guess I was wrong.
May 5, 200619 yr We'll I don't see the Columbus....... oh thats right, Cbus doesn't have a top tier professional sports franchise!! lol And the cavs will make it to the second round! Well at least you're not a pompous ass... oh thats right, you are!! lol
May 5, 200619 yr ^well he's right. Key word professional. Bluejackets don't count, nor have they ever in their existence.
May 5, 200619 yr If anything, give the franchise to Dayton. They always get the shaft And "getting the shaft" is a bad thing? ???

May 5, 200619 yr Aren't you the people bitching about a soccer stadium in Richfield? And I would go to a hockey game in Cleveland but...oh wait... you would? you don't even go to hockey games in your own town. but i understand, i don't go either. i also agree the nhl sucks and is a joke too. it was a top tier league about six or eight teams ago, before they opened the flood gates and let just anybody have a team.
May 5, 200619 yr ^i wish they'd go buck wild with contraction. no one in florida arizona or texas gets a team. Hell lets go back the original 6

Actaully, I have been to a hockey game in Columbus (two years ago, but still...). The point was I can't do it in Cleveland, like I can't watch the NBA team in Columbus. Basically, stupid arguement. May 6, 200619 yr Response to an earlier comment: There should be NO teams in Florida!!! Almost every team (no matter what sport) gets terrible attendance....no one cares. Lets not cheat cities/fans, that would appreciate a team, out of a franchise of their own. What about Portland, Oklahoma City, Las Vegas, Louisville, etc?

Lets not cheat cities/fans, that would appreciate a team, out of a franchise of their own. What about Portland, Oklahoma City, Las Vegas, Louisville, etc? i agree with that sentiment. but all any of those cities need to do is get some ownership together and they could get an nhl team if they wanted to. unlike the nhl, the other leagues have enough sense to keep up some control of their market in order to keep up interest, rather than ruin their sport by handing out franchises like candy.
May 6, 200619 yr I would take out about 8 NHL teams. Make it a 2:1 ratio of US to Canadian teams with the NHL returning to Quebec and Winnipeg (so you would have Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmundton, and Vancouver) Why 2:1? That was the ratio of the original 6 (Toronto & Montreal to Chicago, Detroit, NYR, Boston) +1 (NY Americans)
May 6, 200619 yr I think creation of professional sports team in general face difficulty with nearby geographical competion of professional sports teams, and the popularity of college sports. University of Cincinnati (and pehaps Xavier) basketball seem highly popular with the residents of greater Cincinnati and contribute to the negation of the need or market for a NBA franchise team. The same goes for Columbus with NFL; OSU football is so popular, and Cleveland and Cincinnati already have football teams, do they really need a professional football team?
May 10, 200619 yr ^but if you think about it the detroit area (i'm stretching it a bit with msu) supports three teams and three large stadiums any given weekend during the fall. Lions 65,000 at ford field michigan 107,000 at the big house msu 73,000 at spartan stadium
May 10, 200619 yr The same goes for Columbus with NFL; OSU football is so popular, and Cleveland and Cincinnati already have football teams, do they really need a professional football team? Columbus, even if it grew to a metro of 4 million people, will never have a pro football team. They already HAVE the most exciting football franchise in the country. I'd take OSU football over pro football any day of the week (then again, I'm a Detroit fan). Also, OSU football probably brings in total attendence close to what Cincinnati and Cleveland are COMBINED. I don't think you can compare college football to the NFL. First you have to pay 2k to even have the right to buy a ticket, then you have to buy tickets that are $40-$150 each, not incuding club seats.
May 11, 200619 yr ^I always wondered what it costs to go to a big-time college football game. What are the average ticket prices? Do a lot a people get in free? Could OSU fill that stadium at NFL ticket prices?
May 11, 200619 yr And, OSU has huge licensing revenues (logos, shirts, jerseys, hats, etc.), so they probably make more money than most NFL teams in that regard. They basically ARE an NFL team in terms of popularity. This is a stretch. Last time I checked collegiate sports didnt have to pay multi-million dollar salaries...nor do I think they could afford it. Sure the OSU athletic department is quite wealthy ($26 million in profits). This is for the entire department as well, not only football. The Bengals, on the other hand, over the past couple of years have netted around a $23 million profit. But this is after distributing over $10 million to shareholders ($33 million total). I would also venture to guess that this is not the highest amount in the NFL, but it is a local example that I thought would be relevant.

Could OSU fill that stadium at NFL ticket prices? This is the only info I could find about OSU football ticket prices: The discounted rate for one 2006 faculty/staff season football ticket is $336.00. Split season tickets (3 games) are $144.00.

With its extensive revenue sharing system, virtually every team is guaranteed a profit (or near). The NFL rakes in the dough from licensing, tv/radio broadcasts, etc. then distributes its evenly. Add in a salary cap, and voila, owning an nfl team is a cash cow (especially when you get the tax payers to pay for your stadium).
July 24, 200618 yr Bumping an old topic here... I think Cincy/Cbus/Dayton easily has what it takes to support an NBA team. Ohio is in strong need of another NBA team.
July 24, 200618 yr ^I would strongly agree that Cin-Day Metroplex could support an NBA franchise. However, it seems to be the trend that owners want to locate where they are the only ticket in town (Oklahoma City, Las Vegas, etc). SW Ohio is a strong/solid market, but with the Reds, Bengals, Bearcats, Musketeers, Pacers, Buckeyes, Bluejackets, Crew, and the likes already within a hop, skip, and a jump from the Cin-Day Metroplex...I just would find it hard to believe that another major sporting franchise would locate here especially with the heated competition going on for the few questionable NBA teams that might be relocating.
July 24, 200618 yr Man if Charlotte is looking move again, it'll be 35 years before they put another NBA team in that town They're f'n up two franchises in 10 years. I don't have any problems with Cincy getting an NBA team...but if there was ever a sport (outside of hockey) that needs contraction...that would be the NBA. Just fold up Seattle and Charlotte and move New Orleans to Cincy. I can't believe Portland is going to lose their team.
July 24, 200618 yr While the pacers are not terribly far away, there far enough to have SW have a market of it's own for a NBA team. As for the arena, what about the US Bank Arena?
July 24, 200618 yr The US Bank Arena is garbage. Hardly any club seats. What's the price of an NBA ticket? I think Cincinniati could draw 18k a game, but i think that's too small for NBA standards.

July 24, 200618 yr I guess people like Michael Jordan and Jay-Z invest in those franchises to lose money.
July 24, 200618 yr I guess people like Michael Jordan and Jay-Z invest in those franchises to lose money. For the most part, yes. People buy sports franchises because they want to own a sports franchise, not because they are hoping to make money.
