Posted July 6, 20231 yr My favorite place on earth Piazza Navona: Piazza Del Popolo: Villa Borghese: Saint John Lateran: This was my favorite ancient site we visited. Saint Clement is an 11th century basilica near the Colosseum. Underneath the 11th century church is the original 4th century basilica. Underneath THAT is a 2nd century temple dedicated to Mithras. The church itself is beautiful, and winding further and further down the complex is a pretty thrilling experience (if you are a huge dork) This was my favorite part. This was originally thought to be an 8th century fresco of the Virgin. Current opinion is that it’s actually a modified portrait of the 6th century Eastern Roman empress Theodora. Needless to say there aren’t many 6th century paintings hanging around, especially in the western empire. Yeah it was November and there were a lot of dramatic skies. My iPhone was doing some interesting stuff when I adjusted the focus/lighting too so maybe a bit of cheating especially on the night shots. But the saturated blues are all Italy
