This is just Google Earth, I'm assuming? Google Maps looks the same.

Google Maps is showing it for me. It looks good! I like how recent it is. So much has happened since I was last in Cincy for Blink 2019.

Based on the buildings that are still standing in Cincinnati where TQL Stadium is located, it appears the last time the satellite images were updated was in 2018 (at the most recent). Those buildings started coming down at the end of 2018, and they are untouched in the satellite images.

Looks like it's been updated! I'm hoping Columbus gets a refresh soon so we can see LDC, among other recent developments.

Google Maps in the US will change to Gulf of America and Mount McKinley

“We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources,” the company posted on X. It added that when “name changes vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name. Everyone in the rest of the world sees both names. That applies here too.”

And in four years, it'll be back to Gulf of Mexico and Denali.

More on that:

Google’s maps division on Monday reclassified the U.S. as a “sensitive country,” a designation it reserves for states with strict governments and border disputes, CNBC has learned. [...]

Some team members within the maps division were ordered to urgently make changes to the location name and recategorize the U.S. from “non-sensitive” to “sensitive,” according to the internal correspondence. The changes were given a rare “P0” order, meaning it had the highest priority level and employees were immediately notified and instructed to drop what they were doing to work on it.

Google’s order states that the Gulf of America title change should be treated similar to the Persian Gulf, which in Arab countries is displayed on Google Maps as Arabian Gulf.

Somebody changed US-23 south of Columbus to "Corridor C" years ago and it hasn't been fixed. Ohioans aren't used to calling their highways using the Corridor letter (unlike West Virginians) so it's quite confusing when their GPS is barking at them to get on Corridor C.

"Google’s order states that the Gulf of America title change should be treated similar to the Persian Gulf, which in Arab countries is displayed on Google Maps as Arabian Gulf."

I was just commenting elsewhere that one does not call it the "Persian Gulf" in Dubai or Saudi Arabia.

And one in Japan doesn't call Japan "Japan" either.  The Persian Gulf has been called that, internationally outside of Arabia, for decades. The United States has called the Gulf of Mexico that name for centuries until a former reality TV host decided to change it on a whim.  If the Persian Gulf were suddenly changed to Dubai's Swimming Pool, then you'd have a point.

But this isn't that.

The problem here's not the names, it's that L'Orange has taken an authority that has very long been a deliberative process - renaming geographic features - and either unilaterally reversed earlier decisions, like McKinley or Confederate base names, or just made up new ones, like Gulf of America.

There was no mention of GoA during the campaign, right? He first mentioned it in his inauguration speech, which gave Hillary a chuckle as I recall.

The only good thing to come from this whole episode has been the memes.
