Posted October 24, 20231 yr Thought it was worth having a topic on this specifically. I don't know how much any of y'all have played around with AI image generation for buildings, but it can be preeettty cool. See the below example, which is one of my favorites.
October 24, 20231 yr Interesting to see the blend of International style and historicism with the classical colonnaded entry. The blend is kind of a look towards tomorrow as well as to the past. I would almost be afraid to ask an AI program to design a house or building with Victorian architectural details-then again, depending on which archival design sources were used, the results might be as interesting as this example. Thanks for sharing.
October 24, 20231 yr I asked Dalle3 to generate some images using this portion of your comment as the inspiration: "I would almost be afraid to ask an AI program to design a house or building with Victorian architectural details-then again, depending on which archival design sources were used, the results might be as interesting as this example. Thanks for sharing." Here are the 4 images it created on the first try.
October 26, 20231 yr Wow! Well, this is almost a case of being careful about what you wish for. As a Victorian architectural enthusiast of many years, all I can say is that all of the designs pass the authenticity "sniff" test. That first mansion easily fits into the Queen Anne category with Italianate style arched top windows and a prominent tower which is obligatory for that style. The scale and proportions are perfect which is sometimes tricky to do with Victorian era houses. The streetlamps, cobble stone pavement, and landscaping are spot on as well. I'm impressed! Moving on now to the next image, the gardens and conservatories are a bit "dreamy" looking but also authentic. The large conservatory is reminiscent in design to the famous London Crystal Palace in the 1850's. In fact, the more I look at it, the whole composition reminds me of the printed trade cards from the Victorian era which would have idyllic scenes featuring daily life. Nice. Next is a palatial ballroom of the type that Europeans of the Victorian era danced to the music of Waltzes. The saturated colors are authentic to Victorian era prints and paintings as well. The blues in the stained glass dome and the painting over the fireplace nicely balance the reds which is amazing considering that a machine came up with the composition. I think the last composition is the most satisfying. I recognize the skyscraper backdrop as probably Cincinnati inspired. The thoroughfare with the grand Victorian apartments/condos is one I wish could come true. Of course, today's labor and materials costs would make such picturesque street scenery unlikely but I can almost promise you every space would be rented, owned, or leased if such a thing existed. After contemplating on this for a while, it nags me to think that AI can come up with more aesthetically pleasing designs than many human architects or designers could. I'm aware of some of the risks associated with the new technology but at least this aspect offers a lot of promise, in my opinion. Thanks for taking the time to come up with these renderings and sharing them.
October 26, 20231 yr As an architect, one of the things I've found AI really useful for is early concept presentations. Showing a general sense of overall design aesthetics is really useful for getting a client excited about the direction you are going, but it often requires either time-consuming conceptual design, something that's likely not yet worth spending time on before approvals on direction, or scouring pinterest for the perfect image, something I hate doing and is a massive time sink. Instead, just ask AI for a very specific image and you'll generally get what you are looking for and is good enough to convey a general idea/vibe to go off of. I'll admit it has also taken my prompts and done inspiring things with them which I then can use to create real spaces out of. No shame in using the tool to my benefit haha.

Thanks for taking the time to come up with these renderings and sharing them. I am a computer programmer and I've been using ChatGTP4 for a few weeks to help me with projects. I have concluded that the AI model is already a much better programmer than I am, despite my years of professional experience. Within seconds, it can generate code that would take me hours, even when I'm already familiar with the type of task that needs to be done. But it also has an encyclopedic knowledge of basically all code ever written, so its performance on topics I'm unfamiliar with is incomparable. That said, the AI model still sometimes gets tripped up on minor details or gets itself stuck in loops. So for now at least, a "human in the loop" is needed to work with the AI to define goals, give feedback, and refine the solution. People (and AIs!) are creating specialized AIs that manage other AI agents, so this state of affairs might not last for long. In any case, I highly recommend ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) - which gives access to ChatGPT4 (much better than the free ChatGPT3.5) and DALL·E 3, the image generator I used to create those images - to anyone interested in exploring AI. I'm personally an enormous believer in these new tools, and I'm dedicating almost all of my free time to learning about them and playing with them. For better and for worse, I think the advent of AI might end up being the most consequential moment in our lives, and perhaps all of humanity. Edited October 27, 20231 yr by carnevalem
October 27, 20231 yr Yeah, I've had extensive conversations with my colleagues about it and the reality is that those who embrace it as a new tool will be the ones to find success in the future. There's no stopping its growth, might as well make use of it. I'm just ready for it to be able to take my sketches and ideas and do the boring side of the work in creating drawing packages haha. If I could draft a few details and have it interpret them and develop a full drawing set that is buildable, that would be fantastic. I'm making use of some generated imagery (albeit photoshopped to help alleviate some weirdness in certain areas) in a client presentation that's upcoming. I highly doubt anyone will be able to recognize what's real and what's not.
October 27, 20231 yr Author I too subscribe to the GPT-4 premium version. Right now it's a fun toy for me. Not practical for much. I think it's a lot better at coding than legal analysis. But that will change. Based on what I've read from folks more knowledgeable than I, it seems AI will be more than just a nice new tool. Seems like a suite of transformative technologies on the same scale as the industrial revolution, coming at us in perhaps a tenth of the time the industrial revolution took. But for now, I like it for creating images that I could imagine but never actually create by myself. Stuff that maybe we'll build someday. Like this:
