The funds will go towards the creation of wetlands, bioretention cells and a detention basin within Stage 3 of the Towpath Trail Extension Project. These green infrastructure elements will remove stormwater from the combined sewer system, treat stormwater drainage and reduce run off pollution to the Cuyahoga River. The Green Infastructure elements on the Stage 3 site will reduce storm water runoff by an estimated 5.7 million gallons a year. NEORSD will award a total of $2 million to twelve projects through the 2016 Green Infrastructure Grants program. These projects will reduce runoff by an estimated 10.5 million gallons a year. This is nice, but I'd be much more excited to win a TIGER grant for say, an actual transportation project, like the North Coast Transportation Center... It's kind of ironic Cleveland won a grant for the Red Line Greenway project because the way funding is disappearing for RTA and the seeming inertia to do anything about it, hikers may be soon walking next to abandoned rapid transit tracks... But hey, if RTA and the Rapid go under, folks can have Blue and Green Line greeway walkways; even a Waterfront Line greeway too. Urban greenways and hiking trails seem to galvanize more interest than actual transit project in this town. The Edgewater pedestrian tunnel funding is nice...

October 28, 20168 yr State grant aids Cleveland Metroparks' lakefront connector trail (photos) CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland Metroparks system has won an $850,000 Clean Ohio Grant that will help cover a connecting trail between Edgewater and Whiskey Island. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources administers the grant program. This follows receipt of an $8 million federal TIGER grant in late July. The name is an acronym for Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery. The state money is not for a bridge that would connect Wendy Park on Whiskey Island to the existing Willow Avenue Bridge. Joe Roszak, the Metroparks chief operating officer, said the trail covered by the state grant will allow people at Edgewater to get to the proposed bridge. December 21, 20168 yr A minor update on stage 3 of the towpath connecting Steelyard to the north end of Tremont. The status on the web site was just updated. Until a couple weeks ago the page said something about final design/engineering and site acquisition. March 1, 20178 yr An update to the above, it appears stage 3 is under active construction. They've been clearing the path around Tremont the last couple weeks. I saw equipment working around Clark Field near the animal rescue shaping the land. :clap:

August 30, 20177 yr I still have yet to take the Towpath Trail north of Independence, but I'll have to make a point of it sometime after it's really complete. Well, first I'll have to get back in better shape, because the 27 miles from Akron Northside to Lockkeepers is already more than enough to wipe me out, even with the train available to take me home.
September 5, 20177 yr Just got back to the great state of Ohio this a.m. Despite the ungodly humidity, I decided to spend the whole day exploring the new Lake Link and Towpath Trails. Fun! My accomplice today was a great friend, a real estate developer from Cbus, who has his eye on the area. We can not wait to see what transpires with the Scanton Peninsula, as anyone can easily see the future ahead is a bright one. However, the timeline for change may be longer than we like, as at times we were overcome by alternate waves of garbage and sewer smells, not good. Just another reminder that the entire area is a work in progress and part of a long term plan. We were disappointed that Tremont, that one of the premier neighborhoods was so dead during the daytime. I had to tell my friend it's more of a night time destination...maybe it's different now, but today it was very sleepy. The saving grace was that Brick and Barrel Brewing was open, and we made a major investment there :-) Nevertheless, my friend is a long term thinker, and he left with a great impression of the area. What was cool was we saw a lot of other people checking out the trail, taking pics and enjoying the day. The Peninsula offers a lot of intriguing views of Terminal Tower, the downtown skyline and all of the cool ships coming up the Cuyahoga. Amazing. I myself would gladly invest in the area, if only I were a little bit younger....

Man, that area is not exactly the prettiest section of trail lol. My fiance and I biked downtown, put our bikes in her car, drove to Canal Road, and continued to bike another 15 miles from there. That's how awful connecting from Steelyard to Denison is.

I think a Manhattan Project site is definitely sign-worthy in that context, if not a little bit scary.
May 29, 20187 yr I was taking environmental law in law school when I learned of Harshaw Chemical. A truly dark history in that building, and still a sizable radioactive presence if you take a radiation meter down there. On a day with a strong wind from the path, some baddddddd waves can hit you. Additionally, the adjacent railroad tracks still gather water that ultimately run off to the river. ^There is some quackiness in the video, but he takes a radiation meter near the path in the video.

August 26, 20186 yr Question, I would like to ride the Towpath trail from Canal Fulton to Downtown Cleveland next weekend for Labor Day. Does anyone have tips for navigating the trail where it stops and starts again south of Downtown Cleveland? Thanks!
August 26, 20186 yr In another month it will be really easy! but for now, It is continuous till you hit Harvard Road. You are going to have do go about half a mile on the road while construction of phase 1 is completed. Follow signs to Steelyard, where the path picks up again for about 1 mile. Path will take you up Quigley Hill to where it stops at West 14th. Take W14th Thru Tremont. Take it all the way to Sokolowskis Restaurant, and then towpath pick back up under the Innerbelt bridge. You can then follow it right into downtown. Have fun!!

So that makes more sense that the path they wanted to take was actually along the old canal route.
