Streetscape related: a few folks on twitter were talking about lack of enforcement regarding pedestrian ROW's and construction projects and after tagging Kerry M., he's going to have people out 'inspecting' Jack and the area by Corner Alley for violations of the new law. That's great, but also Kerry, my dude, have you not walked around your district lately? These are two of many where peds get the shaft.

This is long overdue and will go a long way in making our streets more welcoming for pedestrians. And also, hopefully, help restaurants out too.

My link doesn't appear to be working, but a French graffiti artist is in town doing work at CLE Urban Winery and the parking garage behind City Club on Prospect.

Thanks everyone for the photographs of Downtown Cleveland showing development progress in Playhouse Square and SHW Headquarters  I have been looking at certain photographs and noticed some issues that I wish The City maintenance would look into.

 

1. Public Square's southern half has lost many trees and it appears more are dying or diseased. Every time one is removed The City just covered up th whole with another concrete paver instead of replacing the necessary trees that are part of the overall design. One can see how people crave the shade provided by the trees as noticed where the furnishings land.

2. The consistent street lights down Euclid Ave from Public Square to University Circle are different fixtures across the street from The Playhouse Square Theatre.  It seems lazy not to have them consistent with the others.   

3. Many of the crosswalk bridge patterns are in major disrepair along Euclid Avenue.  Either missing stones or stones lazily placed back without any consideration to match the pattern back.  This is most pronounced at Euclid Avenue and East Ninth.

 

I think The City can do better

My suggestion would be for people to raise a stink to officials/the city. Send in these photos with your concerns. It’s like when people post here about streetlights being out but not telling the city/electric company about it.

did you happen to get a pic of the Hanna theater marquee by chance? The last pic on UO of that theater was over a month ago and no one has pics of it at night. I'm really curious to see how it turned out with all the lights. Hoping it looks as gorgeous as all these other ones!

This is all I got. They took the blade sign down, but I didn't get a chance to go on the other side of the street to see the rest.

I have reached out to both The City and The Group Plan Commission that oversees Public Square with absolutely no response multiple times.

I wonder if one of the local TV channels would do a story on the state of Cleveland's "streetscapes," including what you have observed.

But that would be a substantive piece.

Ontario there is like a giant highway. There used to be an island within the southbound lanes of Ontario with a Shell Gas Station just north of Carnegie. That was so much better--and useful--than the situation we have now.

I seem to remember something proposed for that location a while back, probably around the time Jacobs Field opened, but it never happened.

I agree with you. Some of the personnel moves they’ve made like elevating Calley Mersmann are great. But others not so much, and progress is stil soooooo slow it’s frustrating. 
 

The fact that Bike Cleveland is having to basically do the city’s job for them (which is a great effort but is resulting in small improvements) is very sad.

The re-do of the park never made any sense to me. It turned a well-shaded and much used park into a space that’s almost unusable in the summer. Maybe the city hadn’t funneled its quota of cash to LAND Studio yet that year? (Jk-ish)

lol they'll be working on this spot for the next month. The sidewalk on the corner of PS across from 55PS was dug up for idk the past month at least, just like the sidewalk on Euclid being open so long that folks put a fake garden in it. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised but I have my doubts.

When did University Circle add shared bike lane sidewalks? They are equipped with stop signs and everything. It stretches from the Meijers market to at least East 105th and Euclid.

Easy, inexpensive, and a drastic difference

Isn't that just the normal sidewalk though? So they are directing bikes on to the sidewalks. Seems like a menace to people on two feet. Maybe there are not many pedestrians on 105 to matter?

Looks like it.  This is not a real bicycle amenity, it is a fake bicycle amenity trying to shepherd bikes out of the way of cars.

Can’t say for sure from that angle, but it looks to be wider than a standard sidewalk.

Ask for protected bike lanes and you shall receive. They were going up as I took these pictures.

Hate to keep being negative, but these have been up for a while, they were probably replacing ones that already got ran over by cars (the first one got knocked over on the day they originally put them up...).

 

July 19: 

 

To add, these end very quickly and send you into right turning traffic on W25, or if you're going east it sends you onto the deathtrap of a lane on the bridge or you need to navigate across to the bridge without a bike box or anything to safely navigate other than the crosswalk. These lanes look cool but they're pretty useless.

Yeah I was gonna say that. I hate being negative but the ones they put up on Detroit west of W25th were gone within weeks after they made a big deal about putting them in. You can see videos on YouTube of motorists having fun purposefully running things like these over.

 

Good step to take but this is by no way permanent. We need some solid (pun intended) solution implemented to protect major bike lanes like these.

At City Hall especially….

I can't blame the city for idiotic drivers. While it would be nice to have bike lanes that are separated with concrete or something more permanent, they shouldn't HAVE to. There is no excuse for purposely running these over. Any competent human can ride alongside these without destroying them.

FYI, this was from last Friday, so it was a quickly completed job!!

 

Hopefully that means the crews can move on to other repairs in the area!!  😀

Or, better yet, finish the building. Add an addition in the same style as the original. It's already a gorgeous building, imagine how much better it will look finished! The one thing this building doesn't need is an "interesting" modern addition.

Simple math says someone is being left out. Cavs have Max Strus for the next four years at an average of $15 million per year. And that's not enough to put him on the billboard with the starting five? Or do they think Okoro is going to win the small forward spot? 

@KJPI hope someone asks that same question at design review.  I also would love to know the reasoning that the "U" and "A" are different fonts than the other letters

Rather than just another Cavs mural, I suggest hanging a new a banner that resembles the finished facade of an office building. 

Gee whiz, that sad old brick wall has been un-welcoming visitors to Cleveland now for over 90 years. - The worst!

This circa 1928 photo has the Landmark Building completed thanks to a little artwork done at that time. Several other structures in the Cleveland Union Terminal Group weren't yet completed, including the new Higbee's department store.
