Unfortunately "temporary" in the city of Cleveland can mean anywhere from 6 months to 6 years.     For instance, the "temporary" water lines that have been around Detroit and West Blvd for 6 months.  The city dug up the sidewalks to install new lines, then just stopped.....  Before this, there were constant water main breaks and steel plates in the road for years....

Or the temporary jersey barriers on Public Square? ?

Repaving of E55th and Woodland intersection has taken 3 months and backs up the entire east side at both rush hours.

Not sure if this is the best place for this, but it's at least not the worst place....

 

 

 

Looking at the Euclid Grand forum mention was made of the historic looking street lamps that used to accompany the no-longer existing Bond Building. There are many aesthetic considerations related to streetscape that are easily noticeable and seem correctable or at least improvable  - but they seem to occur and sometimes persist (Other than pre-RNC). Just curious, who oversees these “details” in Cleveland?  I know  there are pressing “real” problems in basic quality of life issues...But are  design-related decisions (such as the type of street lamps, etc) overseen by the CDC or are they random items that come before  City Council?  

Tbh the best time to replace the streetlamp's is now, due to the city putting in the new LED's across the city.

Does anyone know what ever happened to the steel and glass tree-like Objet d'art? I liked them and was under the impression they would return at some point... somewhere. But what do I know, ya know? 

 

Update on Cleveland Public Power's conversion to LED streetlights across the city:

• As of 1/22, the project is 33.02% complete.
• 20,070 streetlights have already been converted to LED.
• Overall, it seems like CPP is moving from south to north with their neighborhood installations.

I wonder when they will get to downtown.  So many street lights are out- this should make a huge difference.  Does anyone know if this includes the Healthline lighting? 

Apparently not. There is nothing to indicate that anything has occurred in the CBD or along Euclid.  Based upon the interactive map, they've started outward, at the city line (neighborhoods), working their way inward, towards the CBD.

I've asked this before, in all seriousness. -  Who is in charge of the  aesthetics of the streetscapes and "open spaces" in the city?   The median strip on the Ontario (pretty sure it's Ontario) entrance to  downtown off the highway is just overgrown weeds.  There's space there for some sort of landscaping and it would make a positive impression.   @urbanetics_ is absolutely right when he says that "Sometimes the little things are the big things".  Fix some of those little things and the big things start looking a whole lot better. 

^In that same take, the highway exit ramp onto Carnegie from I-90W is (or at least was as of 3 months ago) a total nightmare. Weeds, TONS of trash, just general dirtiness...it was quite the unpleasant welcome to downtown on my previous morning commute. I know the city’s bad with maintenance but the same pieces of trash were sitting there from last summer thru winter, and they’re probably still there even.

 

Not a good impression for anyone, whether you’re coming for work, home, or especially visiting. Your first impression’s off to a pretty bad start.

Lack of attention to detail may not seem like a big deal, but when accumulated, it detracts from the entire downtown experience.

 

And don’t even get @mrclifton88 and I started on all the issues with lighting, whether it’s burned out / strobe effect / miscolored / old Christmas lights still left up / any other issue. We just had a conversation about all that.

 

A truly GREAT city pays attention to these details and ensures a clean, cohesive and maintained experience in all regards.

How about the city get some of the able-bodied unemployed folks out there to do some cleanup.  Or maybe it could be done as a community service for high school students. Or maybe it could be done by adults who are ordered by judges as part of their sentence for a misdemeanor.

Usually the issue is that there are so many disparate parties involved that nobody knows who is supposed to fix what and the City seems to get bogged down in pointing fingers at others instead of just fixing things.  Unfortunately for my sanity, I am hyper-detail focused so I notice all of the little things that need to be done and never are.  Most people probably don't notice but after a while this just adds up to be a problem.  I would welcome any ideas on how some of us could assist.  I have sent things to Kerry McCormack before and he is pretty good at addressing things.  But there are just so many... lighting usually goes to CPP or the specific property management. As far as tree maintenance, I'm not sure who that is.  DCA does great keeping the planters nice but dead trees are another huge issue... along with trees that have been ripped out and filled in with CONCRETE like on the Superior side of the Arcade... the area around the Casino Welcome Center and Wahlburgers is a mess- the lights are broken... I just dont understand why nobody has ATTENTION TO DETAIL?  How do you walk by your property and not notice these things.  For as great a job as Bedrock has done with the May Co Building I don't understand why they aren't maintaining what they already have.

Almost all of the freeway entrances into downtown are unwelcoming.  The only routes that are decent are E. 9th coming from 90E and E.9th coming from 2W.  But E. 9th coming from 77N, E. 14th, E22nd, etc. to me are not great.

As far as I’m aware, within the interstate right-of-way (including ramps) ODOT is responsible for maintenance. For some of the fancier ramps with flowers and such, I believe they enter into an agreement with the city to maintain.

 

Other than that, inside city limits the city itself is responsible in its ROW. And the are notoriously bad at maintaining anything.

Wow @GISguy that sounds very cool... let me know if I can help in any way if you do that.  I know a lot of us on here probably have the same detail-focused (dare I say OCD) view when it comes to maintenance needs in the downtown area; we just don't always know where to go with that information to get things fixed.

As they say (or maybe just I say) the best thing you can have to prove your point is a map (and these days, a mapping application). Everything is spatial, especially when it comes to stuff like this. Our GIS department uses survey123 to track down problem properties for land banks.  It's a great tool!

I think this is a great idea.

 

It provides ROI and gives unemployed folks some interim employment in exchange for the money they receive. I know they must also look for employment, but it could at least be temporary and part-time.

^In the past the union has been very protective of their territory and do not respond well to attempts to have outside groups do any maintenance. Unfortunately they don’t want to touch it themselves either but that doesn’t stop them from trying to block others. Not sure how you get around that. Especially with Frank in charge. 

Then the politicians need to give the unions an ultimatum: clean the $%#! streets and medians or we'll have them cleaned.

 

It's an eyesore!

 

So what, it's ok to have weeds and year-old trash in these areas? Do the union bosses even live in the City or downtown?

I know this hasn’t worked well with the “adopt a highway” program, but I would love to have the opportunity to landscape and maintain a small plot downtown and put up a small sign that says it is being maintained by my small business. 

These things used to be quite common, but you need a mayor that gives a s$it first, and that you don’t have.

lol you have a point. FWIW after some sleuthing this particular space is run by 'The Greening of Detroit' which is a non-profit and is part of The Detroit Partnership which is affiliated with Univ. of Michigan. Long story short, I know our local extension program is probably over stretched/under funded but as long as it'd be out of the city's hands (like, completely 10 ft pole+ away from the city) it could maybe work. Assuming the city doesn't acquiesce their control, or play ball I'd say some UO guerrilla gardening might be in order.

^ NYC has community garden projects, maintained by various community groups and they are well maintained and popular.

On the other hand, should the fact that the city isn’t doing a good job with maintaining It’s few green spaces be the reason why we don’t create new enriching green spaces that make the city even more welcoming?

I'm excited for another tonedeaf DCA response. I mean, I get that they're repairing the place but comeon, you only need your work truck there no need for the workers to think this is their personal parking. If only there was a surface parking lot ACROSS THE STREET. 

 

Maybe we need some jersey barriers on this area of the park. Ugh, I really wonder what an active mayor would be like.
