That could save the city millions of dollars. I proposed this several years ago with the savings bonded to fund mass transit signal prioritization improvements on RTA's 10 busiest routes including the Rapid through Shaker Square. Wonder what the city plans to do with the savings?

The potential proposed closure on Huron is being led by Playhouse Square, with support/facilitation from Downtown Cleveland, Inc., LAND Studio, and other stakeholders including the city. It's by no me

Probably pay more double-dipping pensioners.....

Not to mention, LED lighting is visually much more attractive.

^ Yes for sure. High pressure sodium bulbs put out a terrible color spectrum. They get used everywhere because they are surprisingly efficient.

It would be nice to see one standard fixture instead of the 50 different kinds of streetlights we have downtown :)

C'mon mrclifton88[/member], let's not exaggerate here. There are only 15 different types of streetlights downtown ;) Well, at least that's how many I could find, I'm sure there are probably more random ones out there. I decided to go out for a bike ride around downtown tonight and took the pictures below of as many different types of street lights that I could find. It's pretty astounding. The most annoying part is that many of these styles are mixed in together on the same streets. On top of that, even the same styles have different types of light bulbs in them. It's a mess. I don't recall ever seeing such a thing in any other city I have been to.

I find it quite interesting that these can be used for all sorts of data gathering. Weather, Social, Criminal - that is awesome.... and scary... but still, awesome (says the GIS nerd in me)

Looks good except for the painted up brick pavers. I'd rather they left the street alone. Thumbs up for everything else.

I like it the way it is -- Gotham gritty.

I like the new wayfinding "lake/city" and the new landscaping.  Otherwise add new lighting under the bridge and keep it simple.

Except that there's no way to actually get to the lake going that direction....

Unless the port authority puts a ferry terminal at the end of the West 9th bridge for my high-speed catamaran to Port Stanley and fast trains from there to Toronto! ;)

I wonder what ever happened to the Rock and Roll Boulevard concept? Or is this a result of that proposal from about ten years ago or so?

Do they actually play music or just decorative?

It's still "Rock and Roll Boulevard." The only kind of branding it received was putting up the street signs though, but they're still there.

I am underwhelmed by the stacked speakers! 3 sides of these stacked boxes will be grey monoliths.  I find the idea sketches more inspiring and hope they could create the stacks more like those concepts.  I also wish they would state whom the artist is. It feels like a Mark Reigelman design.

Do they actually play music or just decorative?

From what I've heard... yes, they will play music. Think bells chiming on the hour--but the bell chimes will be music from artists that have been inducted into the hall of fame. The idea is to un-moor the Rock Hall from North Coast Harbor and bring it into the rest of downtown.

Well that's kinda cool... I like the concept but just not sure about the execution. We will see!

Little more info:

Downtown/Flats Case #  DF 2015-105

Address: East 9th Street Corridor

Company: LAND Studio

Architect: Mark Reigelman; Communication Exhibits Inc.

Description: Speaker boxes will placed within the Public ROW. The boxes will be dedicated to a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, and music of that artists will project out.

Clever idea. I just don't really like it, aesthetically speaking.

Here's Litt's write up about the project. Fills in some of the blanks

'Rock Box' public art project aims to link the Rock Hall - and rock music - to downtown

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The sound of rock and roll is coming to East Ninth Street.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Destination Cleveland are planning to create a seven-piece, rock-themed sculpture and sound installation along the downtown business spine in time for the Republican National Convention in 2016.

Ok, I was wondering if they were "functional" speakers.  If they were just sculptures, then I thought it was very hokey.  Not sure what I think of it yet.

What ever came of the idea to place plaques with the rock hall inductees down on the sidewalk like they do for the Hollywood walk of fame? I remember seeing some around city hall (or close) but no other ones.

From Steven Litt's article regarding the Rock Box concept.

Harris said the concept for the Rock Box installation grew out of an earlier attempt to extend the museum's presence into downtown with its "Walk of Fame," planned as a series of brass sidewalk markers celebrating Rock Hall inductees.

But he said the initial installation of 14 brass markers, embedded in sidewalks on Lakeside Avenue near Public Auditorium, where Rock Hall inductions have taken place, did not fare well in Cleveland winters.

"They got scraped up by snow plows," Harris said. "Water infiltrates. Ultimately, it becomes a very long-term maintenance nightmare. And as a fitting tribute to an inductee, they're not as strong as this new concept will be and not as sustainable."

Sounds like this new concept replaces the brass markers

Ah thank you.

That sidewalk plaque idea was pathetically unoriginal.

At this link is the winning entry from PORT for the Main Ave. bridge underpass. There was a recent mtg  on the 16th  where revisions were presented but I don't see those anywhere. This project would have a big impact but with a very limited budget of 800k it will be tough to realize.  A few more dollars would help.

Another great idea would be to replace the '80s trash receptacles around the Rock Hall and anywhere else where they still bring the streetscape down.

And the fake plants in front of the Rock Hall. Please.

For the most part, I like this a lot. I just hate the name MABU. It sounds silly. Must we give every little area a unique name? I'm also not sure how I feel about the "LAKE" and "CITY" signs. It should be pretty clear which way is which, anyway. And it's not like there's actually access to the lake from that area.

I'm being picky though. Overall I really look forward to this.

Is this another project that will be ready for the RNC?

^ Nice! Now let's standardize all the light posts in downtown Cleveland

Cool, I wonder if they are LED.

Wow cool!  Are they doing both sides? Wish they would put those all through downtown

Didn't get a pic, but saw some new seats and tables bolted into the sidewalk outside of Heinen's, the grocery section next to Geigers. Looks a bit haphazard if I'm honest. Not sure what to make it it...

My hovercraft is full of eels

The new lights on the bridge look great. I wonder how long it'll be before they all have different colored bulbs, or if the city has started doing that on install now?

Maybe a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway. Why do streetlights need different colored bulbs? Or am I just not reading into your remark correctly?

Oh wait, never mind I get it.
