The new lights on the bridge look great. I wonder how long it'll be before they all have different colored bulbs, or if the city has started doing that on install now?

If there are fortunate enough to get replaced when they are out which doesn't seem to be very common here.  The past few months I have come across this bridge I think that whole side has been out.  I was really hoping they would pay more attention to such things with the RNC coming up, but worry since even Rockefeller Park still has much of its lighting not working and what is working, seems to be different colors.

A very mediocre sign for a very high profile location. I always hoped the 'Free Stamp' would find it's way back to where it was originally intended.

BTW does Benesch know they are moving in about three years? Right. Right...

Yeah, my first reaction was also wondering about that move...

How easy would it be to add/subtract tenant names to that sign?

That hot pink color is the worst. Honestly they would look better if vandals spraypainted them.

Mark Reigelman has worn out his welcome in my opinion.

^Yeah, that sign seems more appropriate for a strip shopping center.

Does anyone know why there are still Christmas lights around every other light pole down Euclid Avenue? Not the biggest deal, but it just seems like 'tacky central,' especially with the convention coming up. Keeping Christmas lights up all year seems like something you would see in Parma, not Downtown. (JK )

I personally enjoy lights. If they're not green and red with wreaths, I don't know that I see the issue. Especially in the currently gross section between 9th and 12th.

You're spot on there! That's why I got far, far away!

P.S.- Chardon and Canfield are mirror images of each other. So looks like you're in the same boat.

If they turned them on, I would agree with you- but they don't. Leave them up all year and not in use and they get destroyed in the elements, then you have to take them down the next year anyways because they've stopped working. To me it just seems tacky to keep them up on random light poles throughout the year with no reason, especially when they were hastily wrapped in the first place. I guess I'm in the minority for wanting better standards.  I suppose you're also ok with those concrete planters on Euclid/9th sitting empty sporadically through the year and becoming makeshift trashcans?  :-)

Eh, come on now. You're twisting what I said (or didn't say). I didn't know they weren't lit....haven't noticed. IF they are lit, that's one thing. Leaving them up unused is stupid. I absolutely do not like the empty planters and 150% agree Cleveland needs a backbone against developers and higher standards overall.

I guess those make up a little bit for those beautiful mature trees they tore down last(?) year in the PNC plaza there.

Ah, the annual planting of the trees that will be removed in the fall when they die. The city plants trees like someone people plant annual flowers. Here's to hoping they survive.

So true. Luckily the city is overflowing with cash!

Is this a normal mortality rate for transplanted trees?  If not, what does the supplier have to say about it?  Some of the Euclid Corridor trees sat dead for years, might still be there.  Some of the Euclid Corridor treelawns look like litterboxes, because even the grass didn't take and nobody cared.

This is why I'm leery of spending much on "streetscape improvements."  Unless that means storefront renovations, but somehow it never does.  It always means the worst landscaping money can buy.

I am a little more optimistic with these trees than the last ones there. Strangely enough, I have a friend who is a major in botany. We were having a conversation about these particular trees over a few drinks this weekend. (Only UO people can talk about this at a bar) He said tat because they took the metal grates out, these ones have a significantly higher chance of surviving. Apparently those metal grates allow virtually no water to reach the roots of the tree.

I could be wrong, but I don't recall seeing gatorbags on newly planted trees in past years. Those things should help this new crop make it through their first summer or two.

Immature trees need the same attention as anything else you'd plant in your garden. They need to be planted in the right soil-type, pruned, fertilized, and watered until they reach maturity.

Combine that with the tough growing environment downtown -- short, cool growing season and lack of sunlight depending on location -- and you get lots of trees that die early.

This isn't the only downtown with trees, my question was whether other cities experience this problem on a similar scale.  Other northern cities perhaps.

Luckily the city is overflowing with cash!

Is it cheaper to remove and replant trees every year than it is to take care of trees you already have?

I'm pretty sure the cost of trees is very high, actually.

Were trees planted all the way down E. 9th?

I thought maybe this could go here. The hideous Lincoln Building (even uglier now with the Westin AND Drury open) now has plywood/plexiglass storefronts going in on two sides. What the heck is this?

This CleDotCom article by Michelle Jarboe from a few years ago addresses the topic of the Lincoln property.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- What's old is new again for downtown Cleveland's Lincoln Building, where a landlord is adding 200 parking spaces to serve oncoming hotels and drivers in the city's pinched convention-center district.

Empty office and storage space in the St. Clair Avenue building, which started its life as parking, will revert to its original use as part of a larger overhaul. Under plans presented last month to the Cleveland Landmarks Commission, the building would hold 540 spaces -- up from roughly 340 today. Those plans also call for renovated storefronts and, in an unusual twist, 17 loft apartments on the top floor.

Landlord Jim Breen has talked for years about renovating the Lincoln Building, a nondescript, mid-rise structure next to the IMG Center. Now, he believes, the timing might be right.

His sixth-floor office tenant, Oswald Cos., moved to another downtown property..."

I remember that article, but I don't think this is part of that.  These storefronts are just temporary.  Seems like maybe they just want to get rid of the plywood for the RNC.  The real overhaul as described in that article doesn't seem to be in the works anytime soon.

I past a truck filled with parking meters from E. 9 and Vincent on my way to work this morning. Are they removing them for the film or something else? Anyone know anything about this?

Also, they were installing chess sets at Perk Park yesterday evening... I assume those ARE for the film, but they looked awesome there.

They were also filing the median along Superior (starting in front of the Library), with ornamental bushes and thousand of cut tulips on Tuesday for the filming that was to take place starting Wednesday.  There was also a great looking flower stand at the corner of  E. 6th and Superior in front of the Fifth Third Building.  I was hoping it was something that was actual operating there, but then realized it was also likely there as part of the filming.

The flower stand was destroyed and leveled as of late afternoon yesterday. Actually thought a pop-up retail shop would look great permanently next to the Fifth Third Building.

I'm hoping these movie props get people thinking about how we can take better advantage of our public space downtown, especially on Superior.

Pass this along. DCA looking for cleanup volunteers.

DCA has a very unique volunteer opportunity available for those who have a passion for seeing downtown Cleveland shine!

We will beautify selected areas along E 9th Street, Mall B, Public Square, US Bank Plaza, and around the perimeter of the Gateway Sports Complex.

We need a crew of 30 people each day in order to meet our deadline of June 30th completion.

Installation dates are May 21st, June 4th, June 11th, June 18th, and June 25th

Hours: 7:30am – 2:00pm. Break at lunchtime for a tasty lunch provided by some of our favorite food trucks

I noticed a contractor two days ago ripping up old bulbs and plants around Shaker Square yesterday. I hope they get to planting new ones and some new trees along Moreland! I stepped in a hole of an old tree long removed and nearly twisted my ankle :(

That would certainly make me happy S.C.

I will see what I can find out as I haven't been wondering around over there for a bit.

Not sure which thread the question of the new trees planted on Euclid and 9th being dead or alive was asked, but they are indeed alive. They all have buds and little leaves have finally started to open. They are probably so slow right now from the transplant shock.

They are installing the signage at the former BP building. That white picket fence shouldn't be around too much longer, I'm betting.

^ I hate to admit it....but I think they do look better in person than in the renderings. I like the way the color pops against the backdrop of the buildings

I know everyone here seems to hate them but I can tell you the moment they were put out people started taking photos with them and exploring trying to find where they are all located. They will be a huge hit with most of the public and all kids!  Haha you can't please everyone.

Also: side point.  The library is a beautiful building but have they ever thought of cleaning or repairing the Superior side? It's getting quite dirty compared to the Mall side...

I like the snails, but the mercats look really out of place

Maybe the mercats were squirrels I think I would like them more???  I guess it's just that this artwork isn't very site specific.  You could pack up all of these plastic animals and bring them to LA, Tokyo, Fargo, Elk Rapids MI, and not change a thing

I'm not a fan but my fiancee and her kid love them -- especially all of the critters down at the Science Center. Guess I've just become an old fuddy-duddy!

Now about that new playground for downtown... (OK, no plans yet, but they need one!)

The new ward 3 councilman strongly agrees

those things all over downtown remind me of the Dr Who power of 3 episode....

These are totally different and very cool and will without doubt get tons of great attention, obviously the affect will be lost on many but that's not shocking at all.
