November 8, 20168 yr Capitol Square Ltd. is seeking historic designation for its former Dispatch HQ building at 34 S. 3rd Street - so it can be eligible for state historic tax credits to help finance improvements to the 91-year-old building: http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2016/11/04/former-dispatch-headquarters-seeks-place-on-historic-register.html
November 8, 20168 yr Some other 34 S. 3rd Street building news, according to the article - http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2016/11/04/former-dispatch-headquarters-seeks-place-on-historic-register.html: The Dispatch Printing Co. sold The Columbus Dispatch to GateHouse Media - which moved the newspaper's offices to 62 E. Broad Street. The Dispatch Printing Co. and Capitol Square Ltd., subsidiary of Dispatch Printing, still maintain their executive and finance offices at 34 S. Third Street and there are currently about 40 people working in the building. Dispatch Printing said it plans to lease the remaining space at 34 S. Third Street for office space. The company’s radio stations – 97.1 TheFan and 1460 ESPN – might move into the building from their current location in the Brewery District. Dispatch Printing said it has no interest in selling the building. It also said it plans to install new heating and air-conditioning systems, plumbing and windows in the building. The company, under Capitol Square Ltd. and 34 South Third Ltd., owns a surface parking lot behind the building and parcels south to State Street. In the article, the company CEO said it plans to develop the property it owns on the block with Nationwide Realty Investors. The city’s Historic Preservation Commission will hear the historic designation request at its Nov. 17 meeting. The designation request for 34 S. 3rd Street would not include the iconic neon "Dispatch" sign atop the building. That sign was sold along with the newspaper and the new owners currently lease space on the building for the sign.

February 17, 20178 yr Construction activity has picked up at Gay & High. A pedestrian tunnel is underway beneath W Gay St. and the crane arrived this week. The weather certainly isn't slowing anything down... I've mentioned it in other threads but watching this worker at the tip of the crane made me nauseous!

March 18, 20178 yr Recent photo of the on-going renovation of Citizens Building at the southwest corner of Gay & High. The historic 9-story office building is being renovated into 65 apartments with ground-floor retail space: http://www.columbusunderground.com/construction-roundup-downtown-columbus
March 18, 20178 yr The Citizens Building renovation is being done by the Edwards Companies. This is the same company that has been building the Neighborhood Launch development along Gay / Long Streets east of 4th. Edwards is also building a mixed-use development across Gay Street from the Citizens Building that will stretch along High Street to Long Street (85-111 N. High Street). This 85-111 N. High Street development will contain 164 apartments on four floors above ground-floor retail storefronts and an underground parking garage. The Citizens Building will eventually have access to that underground parking garage via a tunnel being installed under Gay Street. Below is a day-time / night-time photo of that tunnel construction from http://www.columbusunderground.com/construction-roundup-february-2017:
March 18, 20178 yr One more note about the Citizens Building at the southwest corner of Gay & High. When Columbus Monthly named their Top 10 restaurants in Nov. 2016, the top rated restaurant was a relative newcomer, Veritas Tavern: http://www.columbusmonthly.com/content/stories/2016/11/best-restaurants-no-1-veritas-tavern.html Veritas Tavern has only been open a few years in Downtown Delaware. But it has gained a reputation for its molecular gastronomy razzle-dazzle and other kitchen wizardry during its brief existence. In the Columbus Monthly article (linked above), Veritas confirmed that it will relocating from its Delaware location to the ground floor of the Citizens Building. The restaurant would double in size from its current 1,300 square feet to 2,700 square feet in the ground floor of the Citizens Building. A Spring 2017 opening was mentioned in the article:

March 25, 20178 yr For those who enjoy history and old photos of the area, I ran across this photo below of the Normandie Hotel at 259 E. Long St. The comments from the facebook group are as follows - "The Normandie Hotel originally opened in 1891 but suffered a large fire on September 4, 1907. The rebuilt hotel opened on April 1, 1908 and closed on September 29, 1970 and was razed. The old hotel was considered haunted by some". The New Normandy Apartment building now resides on that location.

June 1, 20178 yr More about the new plans for 16 E. Broad and 20 E. Broad Street from the Dispatch and Business First. The new owner plans to renovate both buildings into office space. 16 E. Broad Street is a 12-story building that opened in 1901 and was designed by prominent local architect Frank Packard; 20 E. Broad Street is a four-story building which opened in 1869, is known as the Hayden building and is the oldest building facing Capitol Square. For some idea of the scope of the 16 & 20 E. Broad Street office renovations, look at 145 E. Rich Street. This historic four-story building at Fourth & Rich was also purchased by this new owner and recently completed a renovation into new office space. The exterior is unchanged, but the interior was opened up to highlight the historic features of the building: https://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,419.msg854996.html#msg854996 http://www.dispatch.com/news/20170601/two-historic-buildings-on-capitol-square-to-become-office-space http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2017/05/30/photos-inside-a-developers-vision-for-two-historic.html

September 27, 20177 yr https://redbrickdistrict.wordpress.com/ Blah blah blah! Not sure if we should trust a blog that had a lifespan of April 2008 to June 2009  However, I seem to remember that a property owner (or owners) back then tried using this "Red Brick District" name to see if it would stick. Looks like it didn't. But now that UO is using it ... well we'll see. I've got no problem using it. It's not within the Discovery District, RiverSouth or any other established downtown district. And it beats posting these projects in the Random Projects thread!
