So 190 days a year

Was downtown and I think it will look great-better even than I had thought. Higher also.

Lowest point is 35 feet and highest ass like 120 or something, so yeah it’s up there

Quoted for posterity.  lol.

My one criticism with the installation is that most of the other installations are in more open spaces and public spaces so it can be seen and appreciated from afar, under, etc. I just don't love the installation above an intersection and where the only places to see it is essentially if you're walking along High or Gay. The appreciation of the piece is heavily dependent on car traffic and the revitalization of retail in that area. Otherwise, it is kind of out of the way for the masses. I just think it would have been better along the river, Scioto Aududon, closer to the convention center etc.

I understand it's Edward's that put it at this specific location so they have no interest in it being in those other places but still makes me prefer one of the largest public art installations in the city to be in a better spot.

I’m pretty sure it is in that location as a draw to bring people to that intersection. There is so much going on and new stuff coming to that area, it’s a great idea. I drove by the other day and saw some people taking pics and looking at it.

I agree it would be cool to have it in a more accessible place, but it does seem his reasoning is wanting more people to that area.

Right. Because he owns all the buildings. He's doing it to make his retail Corridor more attractive to perspective renters and consumers where that stretch has struggled with etc. I dont question why he chose this location and type of piece.  I just like her pieces in different settings.

When it comes to public art IMO, the more the better. I think this piece is exciting and unique and will help give this part of downtown the shot in the arm that Edwards is hoping for

It certainly doesn't preclude more art being added to the riverfront or other public spaces, and actually might encourage it. I'd love to see large scale artwork start popping up in more spots all around the city

Speaking of public art- don't forget to take the art related survey that the city is launching June 5th...

"On Thursday, the Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) announced a formal plan for the future of public art in Columbus. The program has been dubbed “Greater Columbus. Greater ART.” and will be the city’s first comprehensive plan for the city and Franklin County.

“This will lay out a blueprint for the next five to 10 years for strengthening the cultural infrastructure of greater Columbus by casting a bold vision to catalyze the creation of more public art. The plan will serve as a tool to guide communities in public art planning in the short and long term, with an emphasis on the equitable distribution of art in the public realm and diverse and inclusive representation of both artists and the communities they serve.”

Additionally, the larger community is being asked to take part in a survey that will launch on June 5th to help evaluate the meaning of public art in Columbus and collect ideas for the future."

For more info, or to take the survey when it launches, visit www.takepartcolumbus.com.

I don’t feel like there’s any sense in arguing the public art installs should be in one place over the other—it should be in both, imo. And I think we’ll see a lot more of it in the next few years, thankfully.

New Study to Look at Downtown Parking – Here’s What we Already Know

A study is underway that will try to answer some basic questions about parking Downtown. Although different groups and companies have tracked metrics for the area’s garages and parking lots over the years, it can be surprisingly hard to find numbers that everyone agrees on, especially given the (continuing) disruption to traditional commuting patterns caused by the pandemic.

The Columbus Downtown Development Corporation (CDDC) is the entity heading up the new study, which should be complete by the end of the year, according to Amy Taylor, the organization's president.

Here are some of the questions that the study will attempt to answer:

  • How many total spaces are there, including garages, surface lots and on-street parking?
  • How is that inventory divided up among the different sectors of Downtown?
  • How often (and on which days and at which time of day) are those spaces sitting empty?
  • Who is using the spaces (office workers, residents, visitors, etc)?

The City of Columbus, in its 2019 Strategic Parking Plan, estimates that there are “over 100,000” off-street parking spaces Downtown.

Any time there is any mention of parking in this city, especially downtown, I would just like to remind any city officials reading this forum that Columbus would vastly improve if we eliminated all street parking on High Street and reclaimed that space for pedestrian use. From the South side all the way to Worthington! Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Since I first heard about this, I've always been curious about how they'll maintain it - remove the stuff that's inevitably going to get caught in there. Like airborne trash, an intentional shoe, or a dead bird.

Not sure, but she has done a ton of installations all over the world and they seem to be able to keep it clean so it shouldn’t be a problem here

Also it's going to be coming down in the winter months, so if anything it will always have an annual clean up and any repairs/maintenance items that need addressed...

I think with Edwards investing so much into the area, he will also make sure it stays nice and will continue to put it up once spring comes every year

I'm not sure if this the right forum to post, but I'm excited to see they're putting a cap across the High St, 3rd St, and 4th St Bridges south of downtown. I do wish they would cap the entire section from Front St to 4th street, but at least this is a start.

100% agree on capping the entire thing. Maybe this will lead to that eventually happening, when we have a mayor with some foresight.

I'm sure if we can all pool enough cash together, we could get our current mayor to do whatever we wanted. He strikes me as someone who would probably accept 5 digits as well not 6.

Interesting…

Surprised this wouldn’t go in by the Makeready hotel at the Peninsula…and put Chef Dalton’s Cove here, once it inevitably moves from Delaware lol

Either way, I think this would be the only seafood centered restaurant downtown?

I agree I am surprised too. Maybe they want to spread their concepts out around the city? I reached out to a friend who recently moved to Charleston about Hanks and she said she hadn’t been yet, but had heard that it was a “staple,” so that’s exciting. I’m happy good concepts are opening in that area.

Speck did a joint pop up weekend with Jollity and Bincho Boys, which are Dayton concepts that I’ve heard great things about, so I was kind of hoping that was an attempt to create buzz for those concepts because they’d be opening next to Speck. I’m not sad I was apparently off on my guess, but I’m still holding out hope they’ll open downtown LOL.

All the retail sections in the building look like they have paper over the windows, so there is still a chance those could open.

Sounds like we could still be waiting awhile…

Former downtown Greyhound site could become extension of Columbus Commons before its redeveloped

“Pullin said redeveloping the property depends on the outcome of the multimodal study the city of Columbus is doing and how LinkUs shakes out in the months ahead.

These efforts are being developed in coordination with the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation's downtown strategic plan, Pullin said.

COTA and the CDDC also are working on an interim use for the property because of its proximity to Columbus Commons. Amy Taylor, president of the CDDC, said interim uses will likely complement or be an extension of what's already happening at the Columbus Commons.

At the same time, COTA is still working with the Federal Transit Administration to see what is allowed on the site. COTA tentatively plans to redevelop the old station into an interchange between buses, bikes, scooter and other transportation modes. The hub could even become a major BRT station.

The city wants the transportation hub – however details shake out – to be topped with a mixed-use development, perhaps with retail and apartments.”

I’m actually okay with them waiting a bit. I feel like it will be better if it’s hashed out for a bit. There is no reason it couldn’t be a 10 story building but sounds like it would probably be closer to 5-7.

I like your optimism more than mine!

This whole idea seems very half baked... (if that even)

COTA bought this site two years ago now and still has basically no idea what if anything they want to do with it

"an interchange between buses, bikes, scooter and other transportation modes"

What does this mean exactly? Obviously bays for different bus routes but then what else? Bike racks? Striped zones to park scooters at, or pick up Ubers from?

Why do they need this large, prime site to accomplish that? Why can't they turn the two existing (and highly underutilized) downtown transit centers they already own and operate into these "transportation hubs" instead, or even in the meantime?

Why do simple improvements take years of studies and re-studies and "interim uses" aka a grass lot to get done?

It seems to me that COTA simply doesn't need or really even know how they might use this site. Also, the article alludes that their ownership of the site may in fact complicate efforts to develop it with the dense mixed-uses we all want to see there. I'd much rather CDDC buy it and oversee a process to get it in the hands of a private developer (or developers, the site is large enough for multiple projects) with a big vision (ala Scioto Peninsula)

There are also spaces available in Edwards' projects across the street. I know the corner space (former Brioso) was said to be a Parisian sidewalk cafe concept, but the rest of the Madison's, White Haines, and new 100 N High building are also coming soon

I would guess the 100 n high building will be reserved for some super fancy dining place. Hopefully they mix in some more affordable options throughout the rest of the developments.

I know the corner is still planned to be the Parisian cafe…it’ll be interesting to see what goes into the new build. I’d like to see something other than a restaurant, but my money is on a restaurant lol

It’s so hard for retail to afford these spots. Everyone bashes developers when outside companies come in, but often only chain stores can afford this type of rent.

Street Cars.

I just don't believe Columbus will ever get local-level rail service again. They've had many opportunities to move that forward and failed to do so.

I think a lot of the rail is still there, it’s just covered up, so it’s possible, it would just take the right administration.

I just want to echo everyone else. I agree that I want there to be a variety of retail in the area, but the foot traffic isn’t there for some general retail stores to do well. That being said, people are drawn to restaurants and bars and generally want to live near them. So, the more good concepts downtown, the more people will want to live downtown, and the more people living downtown, the higher the demand for the bodegas and general stores.

In conclusion, bring on the restaurants lol!

I just think when you can order deodorant at 9pm and have it on sitting on your doorstep in time for your morning shower at a price that's comparable to any big box grocer it's hard to support a bunch of small corner bodegas. I mean Amazon is the second largest employer in the US, so if you want retail it's going to be a bar or a restaurant.
