Agreed. I was really hoping that the Rhodes tower renovation would include some architectural measures to lessen its odd blockiness, but always knew there would be no way state money would be allocated for something like that. So I'll take the lighting, at least it now contributes a bit more to the skyline at night.

Doesn’t sound like this is officially tied to the CDDC’s plan; however, it does align with the plan’s goals, and it’s similar to the CDDC’s Common Thread project, so I’m putting it here. I think this could be great for downtown, if done well. I hope it’s successful.

My pipe dream is for COTA’s Greyhound redev to include a new first floor Central Market, where this hub could start. But I’m going to guess the city will be looking for already available space.

Columbus plans new downtown marketplace focused on women- and minority-owned businesses

“Columbus' elected leaders want to help female entrepreneurs and minority-owned businesses set up shop in brick-and-mortar downtown spaces.

To achieve that goal, Columbus City Council is taking steps to open a new downtown marketplace, Councilman Nick Bankston said. The marketplace program would include graduated rent support, a tenant renovation fund and technical assistance.

Plans are still in the early stages and an exact location for the market has yet to be selected. But Bankston said the goal is to find an area that already has retail activity, and serve as a "catalyst" for continued growth of both the tenants and downtown Columbus.

At the end of this quarter, the city will begin seeking an entity to offer the technical assistance. That entity could also serve as the master leaseholder for the facility, or two different organizations could be involved.”

The city has selected Columbus Empowerment Corporation to run its Downtown Commercial Marketplace Program, which was first announced at the beginning of this year.

“The City of Columbus will launch a Downtown Commercial Marketplace Program to support up to ten existing businesses relocating or expanding to downtown Columbus to stimulate downtown commercial activity.  The business advisor will assist the selected business in achieving financial success, measured through profit and loss statements through planning, counseling, and connecting businesses with other business development resources.  The advisor will also be responsible for reaching out to neighboring small businesses to offer business counseling and to offer to connect the businesses to business development resources.”

As far as I can tell, they haven’t announced a location yet. Although I wonder if plans may have changed from a single marketplace style to potentially up to 10 separate storefronts?

This is a pretty smart idea. Help a few businesses get setup downtown and collect hard data the entire time. If they are successful, you get to show everyone those numbers to prove it's worth considering a move to downtown Columbus for your business.

Gross, what an absolute waist for two buildings on the square. Screw these s**tty religious organizations.

Center for Christian Virtue buys the Columbus Dispatch building on Capitol Square

The five-story building at 62 E. Broad St. is right next to another Center for Christian Virtue building at 60 E. Broad St. Both are directly across the street from the Ohio Statehouse. CCV plans to list the 60 E. Broad St. building for sale.

“From our new location across from the historic Ohio Statehouse, CCV intends to cover our leaders with prayer and to influence our representatives to do the right thing for the good of our neighbors, our city, and our state," Aaron Baer, president of the Center for Christian Virtue, said in a media release. "CCV will be better equipped to rise to meet the needs of the day because of our new home.”

Seems it's only one building - not terrible though considering the fact that Capitol Square is much emptier than it should be. That said, it can't be worse than what happened to the Wendy's on Broad.

They own the building next to this one also. Eh, I would say this organization is worse than the Catholic church putting a museum downtown.

Gross. But didn’t they just buy and renovate their current building just within the past few years? Seems kinda odd to turn around and sell it now.

I don’t think they are selling their current building. They are probably trying to expand so they can manipulate government and try to make Ohio 1845 again.

But they also talk about being across from the statehouse at their new location blah blah. How can both be true? How can they "cover our leaders with prayer" if they are gonna sell the building?

That would also drive a stake in the Wolfe family heart so I am for it.

That would be wonderful.

The CBF article is very confusingly written. I think this is the synopsis: CCV bought the Dispatch building at 62 East Broad for $1.1M (Dispatch had originally listed the building at $2.15M last March). CCV currently owns the building next door at 60 East Broad and intends to list it for sale.

Gee, our own little K Street.

Looks like the United way demo might be moving along soon.

It’s Already Been a Big Year for Downtown Development Proposals

East-Broad-Street-downtown.jpg

"We’re just past the halfway point in 2023, and so far there have been eight significant development proposals submitted to the Downtown Commission. If each of those end up being built as proposed, it would mean over 1,000 new residential units added to the city’s central core.

To put that in perspective, in terms of units proposed, 2023 has already surpassed the total from any of the past five years.

Marc Conte, Executive Director of the Capital Crossroads and Discovery Special Improvement Districts, told CU that he found the numbers “really interesting…I was a little surprised by the number of proposals [this year], especially a few months ago when there were the proposals for Spring Street and Rich Street.”

“I think we will avoid having too many units come to market at once since some projects will inevitably not move forward and others may take longer if they are lining up other funding like historic tax credits,” Conte added."

I wish the second one had a lot more approved or in construction, but yes I am happy with how much is going on.

There is a lot under construction right now, they just didn't include it in the list.

I wonder how many more starts we could realistically see this year too? I’m thinking maybe 2-3?

I figure we could possibly see Vine St, Fulton 340, and the Jaycee Arms project start this year, maybe even Aspire?

The United Way redevelopment has a high chance of starting this year.

I think that’s iffy. The project hasn’t been approved yet. Until it’s approved, money won’t be spent on final construction documents. That can take 6 months to a year depending on complexity and workload. Bidding and getting the contractor on board can take awhile. I don’t see construction happening until 2024.

Of course, I hope it happens faster.

Hmm interesting…

Yep exactly. It will be interesting to see how the build this, because the only parking is to the south and all the windows on that side would have to be removed.

Finally! I was just thinking recently how we hadn't heard anything about this project in forever... Glad it's been moving forward behind the scenes

CAPA bought the church back in way back in 2012 according to this article, https://www.dispatch.com/story/business/2012/05/04/capa-buying-central-presbyterian-church/24084492007/

Also, minor but I'd definitely consider this to be Capitol Square, not the RBD

Three dining/drinking spots planned for former Downtown Columbus bank building

"Edwards plans three connected venues on the ground floor of the Galleria building, at 20 S. 3rd St. The floor has been largely empty since Au Bon Pain restaurant closed in 2014. Planned for the space:

  • A biergarten on the south side of the building that would seat about 100 indoors and 100 on a patio on what is now East Capital Street.
  • A tapas restaurant on the north half of the building that would seat about 100 indoors and 70 on a patio on 3rd Street and in a narrow strip between the building and Trinity Episcopal Church.
  • A speakeasy bar that would seat about 40 and would be accessed through a secret door in the bathroom of the tapas restaurant.
  • The former lobby of the Galleria building will be outfitted with lounge-style seating.

The Galleria spaces have been demolished but construction work has not begun yet on the new restaurants. Edwards said the spots would be managed by Makeready, the new hospitality arm of the Columbus-based hotel investment and development firm Rockbridge. Edwards and Rockbridge are also partners in the 32-floor Merchant building planned for the parking lot of the North Market."

I really hope they keep the beautiful little park next to the building!!  It's kind of tucked in and a feel like overlooked, but when you go by it, it's beautiful!!!  I'm not even sure if the park is part of the property, there is that little strip of surface parking between them.

I hope this is only short term - we need more height over here.

There’s plenty of space around the Square to build taller. I’m hoping all the amenities going in around there creates more incentive/demand to build on the Wolfe property.

From the renderings it looks like they want to extend the highline park all the way to 3rd covering the biergarten.

I think that was the original plan and I’m glad they are doing that.

I actually love this. There’s plenty of space on Cap Square to build tall, and the more activity in the area the more it incentivizes developers to build and people to live and work.

Someone (sorry I can’t remember off the top of my head which one of you) also figured out that Makeready was opening Hanks on High, next to Speck. They seem to really be investing in Columbus.

Agree, I usually want more height and this building is pretty damn ugly, but I like this.

I think it would be a perfect spot to create an awesome rooftop garden. It could connect to the high line they are building and have native plants. Great space for a downtown park type place.
