This would be great location for a boutique hotel, or anything else for that matter.  In the past 10 years, there's been alot of development that's occurred in downtown columbus.  But this particular block of High Street has stubbonly remained surface parking lots.  Cap City Savvy, one of our local blogs, recently described it as a "hole in our city" here at http://capcitysavvy.com/2008/04/06/mommy-why-is-there-a-hole-in-our-city/ .

The big question now is whether Jim Jackson can make the project happen.  I hope he can.  I've seen his involvement with the redevelopment of former Toledo Edison steam plant over at http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,3089.0.html.  Does anyone know of any other projects he's been involved in?

City Hall campus plan takes shape

Expansion of former police HQ would anchor reorganization of offices

Business First of Columbus - by Brian R. Ball

Friday, October 24, 2008

Columbus officials hope to begin consolidating offices at the City Hall campus in two years with a proposed $23 million renovation and expansion of the former Central Police Station.  The city gave a conceptual plan for the site to the Downtown Commission on Oct. 22, a blueprint that includes adding 27,000 square feet to the 98,500-square-foot building at 120 W. Gay St.  The building has been empty for more than 20 years, since construction of the new Columbus Division of Police headquarters next door.

The 78-year-old former police headquarters at 120 W. Gay St. would get a new glass facade under an expansion planned by Columbus officials.  The building has been empty since the current police headquarters opened next door more than 20 years ago.

“We want to respect its history, to showcase its history,” Harris told the commission.

How do you respect and showcase history by hiding it behind an ugly modern sheet of glass that completely changes the character of a building that is an outgrowth of the Civic Center portion 1908 plan of Columbus?

Does anyone have a photo of the building that would be demolished? I also agree with Urbansurfin, how does an ugly glass addition respect the buildings history? Why not make the modern addition blend in with the originally building?

I don't have any pics of the building that would be demolished, but it's no great shakes -- pretty nondescript, and in bad shape. The city's planning office is among the agencies there, and friends in the office -- people with preservation sensibilities -- do not seem to regard it fondly.

:shrugs:..... I like the green space

The idea is good, but the addition of a curved glass facade seems somewhat odd, and in the rendering is ugly.  Just how that showcases anything other than poor judgement is beyond me....doesn't seem to work on any level.

Now with 100% more fountain.

Now just add Kona Grill!

Thanks for the renderings Walker.

I don't know if I like that glass addition to the old police building.  But I know I like it much more in front of that proposed park rather than in front of the existing parking lot.

Big improvement in accessibility between the trail and Gay St.

Here's a rendering of the conceptual site plan for the City's downtown campus that was presented at the October Downtown Commission meeting that was referenced in the Business First article.

Hopefully they'll include signage from Gay St to the trail and from the trail to Gay St including the businesses located there.

OT, but the trail leads to a number of streets lined with businesses including 3rd and King east of the river, where if traffic calming were implemented would much less intimidating to reach (the streets are 25 but obviously need enforcement, particularly King). Include signage from the trail and it would become more useful for going places than purely recreational.

I am not a big fan of the new front glass entrance but the rest of the addition isn't so bad.  They need to work on that park a little, add a little more to it.  Make the path go along the building and put no green space between the building and the path, making the parker bigger.  I think with the green space as it is shown now would just be dead wasted space, for show, no one would feel comfortable using it.  As for the rest of the park, put in bushes, an intimate fountain, some benches, more trees.

One reason I heard was that it´s for security purposes. Still, I wonder if that price tag is typical. 1$ million could go towards making Front north of Broad a two-way (long overdue).

^wha...?

In my spare time, now that I seem to have so much at the moment, I have been fooling around with SketchUp, it's an addiction, I swear.  I've been modeling a few buildings in Columbus, such as Rhodes Tower, National City Bank, Bordon, and Midland.  Today I decided I would model one that was not built but came very close.  So here it is from Google Earth.

CbusCapitol.jpg

Only Rhodes Tower and Capitol Tower are my creation, all other buildings are from Google Earth creator 'wopkins', minus the State House, that is from Google Earth Staff.

Very nice!  Capitol Tower would have been at the northeast corner of Third & State.  It would have been located next to the Dispatch building.  It would have also been owned by the Dispatch. They still own the property which consists of a good looking (but now vacant) classical bank building and two surface parking lots.  I believe it got derailed during Bush 41's recession in 90-91.

By the way, I predict an MTS post saying this should be moved to the Abandoned Projects thread .

i didn't know that thread existed, I'm on my way out the door and wanted to get it up before I left.

Cool.

Good job Jeremy.

Well, he's not in this section and I think this thread is cool :).

Just another angle.  National City, Bordon, Midland, Rhodes and Capitol Tower are my creation, all others belong to Wopkins or Google Earth Staff.

You tell em CDM!

I haven't thought about the long lost Capitol Tower for years.  And I remembered a website that had a rendering of it some time ago.  At the time it was called skyscrapers.com.  Now its been merged with a company called Emporis.

I found this rendering at http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=capitoltowerplace-columbus-oh-usa

That smaller building to its left is the Dispatch Building and that's the Statehouse in the foreground.

Looks nice, but you know this would mean at least four more parking garages.

Better than 20 more surface lots

Anyone have good unobstructed views of the midland building?  or any high rise for that matter in columbus?  I'm going to do more buildings.

^Looks like that thing in Nashtucky.

Your rendering of Borden is fantastic!  Even has the reflective quality.

I distinctly remembering seeing that rendering for the Capitol Tower in the Dispatch when I was around 8 years old. I was so excited something like that was going to go up downtown. Sadly, of course, it never happened. I've always though the Dispatch and and it's media empire could easily consolidate in a building like that downtown, even to this day. Maybe one day the plans to construct Capitol Tower will resurface.

Thank you so much.  I got it's reflective quality from this photo.  I took this a couple of years ago.

I've always though Borden was one of the most underrated of Columbus' towers... along with the art deco 5/3rd.  Beautiful stuff.

I apologize for the poor quality, my camera was on the fritz, but atleast you'll get an idea! I'll have better photos tomorrow!

Love it!

As promised, here are some better photos. I took these today on my way back to Cleveland.

Yeah! I love 'em.

You know I hated this project at first, but now I am starting to like it.

Both ends are also accentuated by higher-density, glass covered buildings with retail; Carlyles Watch and the new CCAD dorm building.

what, CCAD is building a new Dorm?  Why haven't I heard about this?

Yeah, they are. Crazy hehe. Would be interesting living in a dorm right downtown like that.

Beautiful shots Chadoh!  This project is really starting to come together.

Thanks! I have to agree with J. Remy, at first, I didn't care for it, especially the building facing 4th. But now, after seeing it put together, well, at least some of it, I really like it! Especially the units on Gay Street! Very cute!
