Snoop Dogg to carry Olympic torch ahead of Paris opening ceremony

American rapper Snoop Dogg will be among the torchbearers carrying the Olympic flame in the final stretch before the opening ceremony of the Paris Games on Friday.

Snoop Dogg, 52, will carry the torch through the streets of Saint-Denis, the northern Paris suburb that is home to the Stade de France Olympic Stadium, the town's mayor, Mathieu Hanotin, said on X.

"Saint Denis: last step before the Eiffel Tower. An international cast @SnoopDogg for the last stretch of the Olympic Flame," Hanotin wrote.

The rapper, who is also contributing to NBC's coverage of the Games, is better known in the sports world for his Snoop Youth Football League. The championship game is called the "Snooper Bowl."

Other carriers of the torch in Saint-Denis on Friday include French actress Laetitia Casta and French rapper MC Solaar.

The identity of the person who will light the Olympic cauldron on the night of the opening ceremony is secret, with less than a dozen people in the know.

Yes. Add dope smoking to the Games. Epic rematch between Snoop and Willie Nelson. Willie is 1-0 last I heard.

Ahead of every olympics, they hype some facility not being ready for the games (at Beijing it was the air pollution).  This time, since France is a functioning place, they built fear by warning that the river was going to be polluted.

Lol. It's so hard to believe people are actually upset about this. Just being miserable living in a constant state of outrage about art.

^^ LOL. Virtue-signaling snowflakes.
Also, I notice the sports-bar themed Harry Buffalo isn’t part of this boycott. I guess money still talks, even when you’re clowning yourself this hard.

I don't know rugby or watch rugby, but you don't need to to appreciate how epic this finish was for the US women's team to claim the bronze:

I played in high school, college, and then mens league for a second. What the women's team has accomplished is nothing but remarkable in such a short time. Australia won the World Series of Sevens this year, so that was no small feat.

Ignatius, where I went was a club team when I played. Now they're regularly state and  and have also been national champs and runner up to national champs. And unlike back in the day the national champs are in fact decided by a nationwide tournament.

They frequently travel to Europe and beat premier junior sides in places like Ireland and France. We are a decade away from a competitive rugby scene on the global stage.

There's a junior rugby league from prek to 8th grade in Cleveland now that's very popular. It has teams all over the region that play at Ignatius for their games. Once my kid can walk he will be playing.

wow thats great to see rugby blowing up at the youth levels like lacrosse did. i had no idea.

i think this is in part why the big four pro sports struggle with attendance and old neighborhood park ballfields are empty. people have other sports interests.

Ya. Look at pickleball as an example to that. Though pickleball is so popular you see parks getting rid of entire swaths of tennis courts to build pickleball courts.

I wouldn't be surprised to see pickleball as a test sport in the 2028 Olympics.

Leisure time in general is far more fragmented and specialized. Used to be baseball, woodworking and drag racing were all males were into.

i can’t get an answer from anyone on this, yet everyone is wondering … do they still do that gymnatics event where they twirl the ribbon flags on sticks? nobody is certain - thx for solving the mystery if you know …

Rhythmic gymnastics. It starts the week after next.

Look at all of these gimmicks and dumb artificial controversies.  Plus ads on the team uniforms and uniforms that don't have national flags on them.  Looks like Snoop Dogg is being set up to be the mascot of the 2028 games in LA.  Maybe they'll play his songs at the medal ceremony...for every winner, every country.  Mariah Carey took over Christmas.  Snoop Dogg is taking over the Olympics.

The whole thing is just an influencer van-in.  LA is going to be the 2028 Red Bull Games.  Opening Ceremonies in Olympic Wonderbread Stadium.

In Atlanta they paraded a bunch of Ford Trucks around the stadium and then Gladys Knight popped out of a secret hatch and sang Georgia, or something.  In LA they'll parade '64 Impalas w/hydraulics around the stadium and Snoop will emerge to sing Little GTO or Little Old Lady from Pasadena

A quick google didn’t find an answer, but I’m gonna guess that *at least* half the participants at these games were born after 2000. The event and it’s associated spectacle, inevitably evolve with the times. If they didn’t, athletes would still be doing everything butt-naked.

Meanwhile, the man on the Turkish silver-medal-winning mixed air pistol team is a 51-year-old dude who didn't wear eye or ear protection.  Looks like a software engineer that management has assigned to debug things that management doesn't actually understand.

EDIT: I wrote that before I even glanced at /r/ProgrammerHumor and the guy is all over the memes there. 😆

Everything popular culture related is fragmented and specialized.   The 'net did that.

One could argue if that's a negative or a positive.   I'm in the latter camp.
