Perhaps relevant - my understanding is that Current Events only shows up if one is logged in. (The intention being to avoid randos coming in and derailing conversations.)

am I the only one who thinks the current events section is a net-negative for this forum? it breeds resentment and, honestly, only serves to lower the credibility of everyone who regularly posts in there. I popped in this morning after not looking at it for several years, and it's just as ugly as it ever was.

This conversation has happened before. If you don't have dedicated space for it, it pollutes the regular topics ad nauseum. You would see people shoe-horning the political posts into other topics. You can ignore the current events section if you aren't interested in it. The Admins can even ban you from current events if you'd prefer to not be able to access that part of the site at all.

There are enough other forums for political comments.  Don't need to do it here.
