I bet if the state GOP leaders were simply old school Republicans who would jump through hoops for any economic gain, Cincinnati could have pulled this in, but as it stands, the bat s**t crazy no doubt scared many away.

Don't worry, I just saw an ad saying that Governor Ramaswamy is going to make Ohio the county's most business-friendly state!

Both Salt Lake City and Cincinnati were perceived as blue cities within red states, while Boulder is seen as a blue city in a blue state. With controversial legislative proposals now being considered in both Utah and Ohio that would be in conflict with the inclusive worldview that is an intrinsic part of Sundance, the move to Boulder seemingly lessens what could have been a source of increasing tensions for the festival.

The Sundance Film Festival announces its new home: Boulder, Colorado

The Sundance Film Festival will have a new home starting in 2027: Boulder, Colorado. The Sundance Institute made the announcement Thursday after a year-long process.

"Boulder offers small-town charm with an engaged community, distinctive natural beauty, and a vibrant arts scene, making it the ideal location for the Festival to grow," the institute wrote in a press release.

The announcement says the festival will center in downtown Boulder, at theater and venues around the pedestrian-only Pearl Street Mall, as well as spots on the campus of the University of Colorado Boulder.

"Our walkable downtown, iconic venues, and beautiful landscape at the base of the Rocky Mountains sets the stage for the Sundance Film Festival to flourish in its next chapter," said Charlene Hoffman, the CEO of Visit Boulder.

I mean mostly yes.Trumper and his MAGA minions have changed the trajectory for a lot of the country.

Sundance placed a pretty sizable chunk of their decision based on each states political climate especially towards LGBTQ.Ohio and Utah are politically charged against such groups  right now.

Cincinnati may have overcome the coastal bias in a fair competition. But the states view on gay rights sunk a very good bid for Cincinnati.

All the more reason they should have chosen Cincy. You can't win electoral college elections by conglomorating in a just a few areas of the country.

Sorry folks, this thing was never coming to Cincinnati.  Winter/skiing is part of its image.

Plus, the movie business is in steep decline and might not exist at all in 10 years.  Watching a movie on streaming isn't special.  Movie stars aren't special anymore, they're just influencers.

But that is what Sundance is kinda about in where they want to host their festival. In a welcoming bubble environment away from a hostile state government.

I have zero doubt Cincinnati would have changed the majority of festival goers opinions about the city and region if Cincinnati won the bid and they attended.

Maybe in another 10 years?

An hour drive to ski slopes is pretty close. People take day trips to ski from Boulder and Denver all the time. People fly out west and then hit multiple resorts that are an hour plus away all the time.

And if you're focused more on skiing, you can stay closer to the slopes and drive in for a day for Sundance.

Sure but it is not nearly the setup or accessibility to skiing that Park City has.The US Olympic skiing team is based and trains out of there probably the best skiing in the country around Park City.

Not to get too off topic but has anyone noticed 3 or 4 of the US Olympic's aerial ski team is out of Perfect North Slopes?

Oh please.  If you want to experience an unwelcoming environment, go to a party in the Hollywood Hills or, I presume, Park City.  People in the movie business are pretty much the most narcissistic/psychopathic people alive.  Hollywood will eat your soul.

I was definitely hoping Sundance would land in Cincinnati, but this was in the back of my mind the whole time. The festival would have lost its prestige and importance over the years just by decline in the industry (aided by "elitists" ignoring it after the move), but Cincinnati would have been the scapegoat.

Pretty much the only movies we watch anymore are kids movies, or bad movies on Rifftrax. Neither of those types of films are Sundance material. The rest of our viewing is TV shows.

The movie business will always be around, it will just shift to different forms. Chances are smaller Indy film labels, like A24 will take over and start to gain more and more success. There are plenty of great movies being made. The main studios are only focusing on big budget dumb films, but plenty of smaller studios are making good stuff.

The streaming services are going to be the biggest distribution point for movies going forward. A lot of the best stuff I've seen lately has been distributed by streaming outlets
