Posted April 21, 200619 yr This one's all over the news and will be the front page headline tomorrow: From www.Cleveland.com: Cleveland firefighters battled a huge fire Thursday in a industrial complex on Transport Road. An explosion sparked the blaze shortly after 12 p.m. Workers at General Environmental Management, a Flats business that treats liquid industrial and hazardous wastes, were using a large crane to move a tank when the explosion occurred, fire officials said. April 21, 200619 yr For the record, this happened in an area where the east numbered streets are displaced, but from a map viewpoint it's between Tri-C Metro and the Flats/Industrial Valley near E. 30th and Broadway (try to picture this area in your head, it's not easy). This is also the same industrial site that has been emitting a bad odor for years, which many people talk about since it's smelled by the 1000's of motorists who use I-77 daily and Tremont residents have long considered this a major issue. Good news: the EPA shut the company G.E.M. down today until further notice.
April 21, 200619 yr I was over by CSU today and I saw a plume of black smoke about a mile directly south. Then I heard a noise, like when a truck goes over a steel plate in the road on a construction site but I realized that was the explosion. The pics from the news choppers didn't seem quite as awful as it looked from where I was standing. Scary stuff! clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

January 10, 200817 yr PD Article about the EPA's findings that GEM has been violating the Clean Air Act for years: http://www.cleveland.com/plaindealer/stories/index.ssf?/base/news/119995766165760.xml&coll=2 Can this place get closed down already? For every whine by industry about there being too much regulation, I'm sure there is a GEM blowing up and spewing tons of illegal crap into the air with impunity.
January 11, 200817 yr Amazing pics!!! Can you imagine living in Cleveland when plumes like those filled the skies and were seen as a sign of progress?
January 11, 200817 yr Wow. I would have freaked if saw that and broke out my Michael Jackson face mask! That must have looked scary! Although, not as scary as Las Vegas this past week.
January 14, 200817 yr This does wonders for our reputation. Buring river, exploding neighborhoods... Thanks for the hype. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
