Cyclones. Reds if it were playoffs. Cyclones need our support!

Probably going to try to go to the game on Saturday night - any takers?

yes.

^ I would but I have to work.

The game tonight was awesome. Cincy dominated the entire game. The Cyclones ended up winning 8-3.

Yeah, I went to that game as well.  I've never seen that many goals scored in a hockey game!

How was the crowd attendance?

Not sure what the numbers were, but it was a decent crowd.  I get the feeling that they might have done better if the Reds weren't playing right next door with such amazing weather.

How was the crowd attendance?

The Enquirer reported 3,000 and some change.

Cyclones Rally From Three Down To Win In OT, 5-4

Date: 04/26/2009

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones wiped out a three goal deficit and used a short overtime to claim a 5-4 win over the Elmira Jackals on Saturday night. Jimmy Kilpatrick’s second playoff goal at 1:46 of the extra session off a rebound gave Cincinnati a two games to none edge in the best of seven series for the North Division title. The winner of the series advances to play the winner of the Florida-South Carolina series in the South Division for the American Conference championship.

Frederic St. Denis started the game winning play with a feed to Ian McKenzie at the Elmira blueline. McKenzie hustled down the slot and fired a shot that Michael Teslak knocked away. The rebound came back into the slot and Kilpatrick, who was trailing the play, rifled the shot home.

Elmira grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Pierre-Luc Faubert netted his first goal of the period and seventh of the playoffs at 1:44. Chaz Johnson and Travis Gawryletz had the assists. Mac Faulkner evened the scores at 1-1 with his second playoff goal at 12:43, re-directing an Ian McKenzie feed from the top of the goal crease. Faubert’s second of the period at 15:45, put the Jackals ahead once again. Johnson and Slavomir Tomko had the assists on the score. Elmira had four power play chances to Cincinnati two and the Jackals outshot the Cyclones, 12-7.

The Jackals extended the lead to 3-1 when Steve Yetman picked up his fourth goal of the playoffs at 1:44 from Benoit Doucet and Tomko. Elmira made it a three goal bulge at 7:05 when Doucet collected his second of the postseason from Derek Couture and Wes Cunningham. With the Cyclones shorthanded, Faulkner got loose on a breakaway and was chopped down by an Elmira defender. The result was a penalty shot opportunity that Faulkner converted and closed the deficit to 4-2. It was Faulkner’s second of the night and third of the playoffs. The shots again favored Elmira, 10-9.

Cincinnati scored a pair of third period goals to force the overtime. Faulkner completed his hat trick at 11:31 grabbing a rebound at the left post and jamming it into the net for his fourth of the playoffs. Felix Petit and Bryan O’Hanley had the helpers on the score. Then, after killing off a 1:16 five-on-three shorthanded situation—which included a Jackals goal that was waved off after it was ruled kicked in by referee Ryan Sweeney—Cincinnati launched its comeback. Dustin Sproat’s sixth goal of the playoffs on the power play with 2:08 to play knotted the scores. Sproat got to a loose puck in the slot on the right side and shoveled it in, as Jimmy Kilpatrick and Mark Santorelli handed out the assists. Cincinnati controlled the shots, 13-5, in the third period.

In the overtime, Cincinnati outshot the Jackals, 2-1. For the game, the Cyclones held the upper hand in shots, 31-28. Ryan Nie took the victory, stopping 14 shots in relief of starter Loic Lacasse. Teslak absorbed the defeat for Elmira, stopping 26 shots.

Game three of the series will be played at First Arena in Elmira, NY on Wednesday night (April 29) at 7:05pm. That contest will be carried on MAX-FM (97.7 and 99.5) at 6:45pm.

Great game last night.  The comeback was amazing, $3 24oz Miller High Life was nice, and I caught a t-shirt shot into the crowd.

I have never seen anyone that excited about a t-shirt.

Cyclones are now up 3-0 in the best of seven series following a win last night.  They could wrap this thing up in sweeping fashion tomorrow night in Elmira.  If not, then game 6 will be back in Cincy Tuesday night at 7:30pm.

Cyclones Finish Off Elmira 2-0 – Head To Conference Finals

http://www.cycloneshockey.com//team-news/cyclones-finish-elmira-2-0-%E2%80%93-head-conference-finals

Date: 05/02/2009

ELMIRA, New York – Ryan Nie stopped 24 shots in collecting his first playoff shutout as a Cyclone, in a 2-0 win at Elmira. The Cyclones got goals from Dustin Sproat and Kyle Rank to secure the four game sweep for the North Division playoff title. Cincinnati also claimed the North Division regular season title as well. It is the second straight year that the club has won both honors.

Cincinnati will play either Florida or South Carolina for the American Conference championship next week. The South Carolina Stingrays holds a two games to one edge in the best of seven affair for the South Division title. Cincinnati knocked off the Stingrays in five games a year ago for the conference crown.

The Cyclones scored the only goal of the first period with 24.7 seconds remaining in the stanza. Dustin Sproat snapped off a shot from the bottom of the left circle for his seventh score of the playoffs. Gerard Miller and Jimmy Kilpatrick handed out the assists on the score. The physical nature that the Jackals are noted for was evident as Cincinnati had three power play chances to Elmira’s one. The shots on goal favored the Cyclones, 12-7, in the opening 20 minutes.

A scoreless second period kept the score at 1-0. Each team had scoring chances, but goaltender Ryan Nie for Cincinnati and Michael Teslak for Elmira kept the scoring chances from being converted. The shots again favored the Cyclones, 9-7.

Cincinnati extended the lead to 2-0 when Kyle Rank intercepted a pass deep in the Elmira end and turned it into a breakaway that resulted in his second playoff goal. The shots on goal in the third period favored Cincinnati, 12-10, and for the game the Cyclones held the upper hand, 33-24.

The Cyclones will play either Florida or South Carolina for the American Conference championship next week. The schedule will be released as soon as it is available. The Cyclones will host game three of the series on Wednesday, May 13 at U.S. Bank Arena. The fourth game of the conference championship will be on Friday, May 15 in Cincinnati and if a fifth game is needed, it would also happen at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday, May 16. All these games would start at 7:30pm.

Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. For the latest news, notes and information on the team, visit: www.cycloneshockey.com . Ask about the Family Four Pack (four tickets, four hot dogs, four Pepsis, four Cyclones winter hats, four public skate passes at SportsPlus and a SportsPlus game card) for just $77!

Next game for the Cyclones will be Wednesday, May 13th at US Bank Arena. That game will feature the notorious $1 beer special (PBR, Miller High Life & Icehouse). That's enough to get me in the seats...anyone else what in?

If not this game, then the Saturday game on the 16th would also be good as they'll have the $1 hotdogs and $3 24oz Miller High Life special going.

All games at 7:30pm.

I'll probably be there for the beer special alone. Seeing the game is just a bonus lol

I plan on going to the Wednesday game and maybe the Friday game as well. Now if I can find a DD for Wednesday then I'll be all set.

For the second year in a row the Cyclones will be playing the South Carolina Stingrays for the American Conference Championship.

WHO DEY!!!

The Cyclones are trailing in the series 2-0 right now.  Obviously everything is still on serve as it comes to home ice advantage.  We have the next 3 games here (Wed, Fri, Sat) if it gets to that.  I'm planning on going to the Wednesday game ($1 beers)...drop me a line if you want to meet up prior to the game.

Me, Sherman, and Ronny (Gordon Bombay) were going to meet and head over to the game, meeting at Sherman's place and walking over.

I'll be at the game. I'm supposed to meet up with a friend. Maybe I'll see you guys there.

South Carolina Captures Conference Title In 3-2 Win Over Cyclones

Date: 05/16/2009

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The South Carolina Stingrays scored a late third period goal to claim a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Friday night. With the win, the Stingrays take the American Conference championship and will play Alaska in the Kelly Cup Finals starting next weekend. It si the third time that South Carolina has advanced to the championship series.

The Cyclones netted the two goals of the first period. Rookie Mark Santorelli collected his first pro playoff goal at 9:41, as Jason Woll and Mac Faulkner added the assists. The lead extended to 2-0 at 18:16, as a power play from rookie Ian McKenzie off a rebound gave the two-goal cushion. It was the first two goal lead of the series for the Cyclones—who entered the game having led just 5:11 during all of the first three games. Jimmy Kilpatrick and Mark Van Guilder had the helpers on the McKenzie goal. The shots on goal favored Cincinnati, 13-8, in the opening frame.

South Carolina returned the favor by scoring both goals in the second period. Josh Godfrey scored his first pro playoff goal at 7:49 with a blast from the point. Pierre-Luc O’Brien had the assist on the score. The Stingrays tied the game at 12:24 with a shorthanded goal from Max Lacroix—his seventh of the postseason. Travis Morin had the helper on the score. The shots on goal favored Cincinnati, 7-5, in the period.

Rookie Nikita Kashirsky grabbed a puck on the right halfwall with 2:41 to play and fired it inside the far side post for his fifth goal of the playoffs. It was an unassisted goal and provided the heroics for the win. The Cyclones pressured the South Carolina goal in the final minute but were unable to score. The shots on goal favored Cincinnati, 6-5, in the third period and for the game the Cyclones held the upper hand, 26-18.

Jonathan Boutin stopped 24 shots to pick up his eleventh win of the postseason. Ryan Nie stopped 15 shots in taking the loss. Head Coach Chuck Weber will participate in the final Cyclones Coaches Show on Monday night at Jefferson Hall at Newport on the Levee from 7-8pm.

Wrote an article today for Queen City Discovery about the minor league hockey situation in Cincinnati and in neighboring regions such as Dayton, Ohio and Fort Wayne, Indiana. I'm a big fan of the Cincinnati Cyclones, but feel that the arena the team plays in doesn't really suit the product. After going to many Komets games as a kid visiting family in Ft. Wayne and recently checking out the Dayton Gems, I'm convinced a team in the IHL (or some minor league hockey team) should come to call the Cincinnati Gardens home.

How Minor League Hockey Should Be

Like the Cyclones? Remember the Cincinnati Stingers? Where would you rather see a hockey game? Gardens or the Bank Arena?

Always the Gardens!

I love going to AHL games here in Cleveland, but we have a similar problem in that Quicken Loans Arena is just too big to have a good minor league hockey atmosphere.  The sightlines in the lower deck on the sides are also quite lousy, since they have a low angle of ascent designed for basketball.  We've had problems keeping teams around and every time one leaves, there's talk that the CSU Convocation Center, with its 13k capacity, would be better for hockey.  Unfortunately, as far as I know the place does not have the capability for ice so that was never a viable option.  The Q is the only place to see hockey in Cleveland.  Better than nothing, I suppose.  We're lucky Dan Gilbert found a way to bring it back.

If you want to see a good sporting event at the Gardens, check out the Cincinnati Rollergirls- http://www.cincinnatirollergirls.com/

We beat Cleveland and Columbus last year and I can't wait to go back and watch the Black Sheep take them down again.

I was only to the Gardens a few times as a kid, so I don't remember it too well.  I used to go see the Mighty Ducks hockey team, and the indoor soccer team, the Silverbacks.  From what I remember, it was kind of run down and deteriorated, so I say use US Bank Arena. Also, there is nothing really around the Gardens, so going to a bar or restaurant after the game probably wouldn't happen nearly as much as it does at US Bank. I guess from a seating perspective, something like the Cintas Center would be perfect.

Minor League Hockey is supposed to be gritty. My sense is that Gardens will make selective investments in their facility if they feel it would pay off. The neighborhood around has actually improved over the last ten years with the destruction of the apartment complexes and the building of the Sunrise neighborhood - Golf Manor probably isn't as nice. Until the Cyclones tried to big time with the rest of IHL, things were really clicking at the Gardens. XU games there in the late 80s and early 90s were fantastic.

Minor League Hockey is supposed to be gritty.

I couldn't agree more.  It always felt like a hockey game at the gardens.  Like a fight could break out on the ice or in the stands.  I do understand that the gardens doesn't feel as nice, clean, whatever.  But it has character that US Bank Arena doesn't have (just saying it sounds sterile).

I've been wanting to go to a Lake Eerie game for awhile (still don't know why they called it Lake Eerie and not Cleveland, but oh well). The AHL is my favorite minor league and I miss Cincinnati not having a team in that league. I really like that they offer a ticket deal with the RTA that gets you a pack of hockey tickets and RTA passes. Do they usually only seat the lower bowl?

I wouldn't say the Gardens is run down, just older. It could definitely use some cosmetic improvements. It was slated to get some modernization with the arrival of the RailRaiders AHL team that never materialized. The thing with US Bank is that when you think about it there really isn't much around it. GameDay is just down the street, but everything else is further up in downtown. The walk isn't that bad, but unless it's early Fall or playoff season that can be a very cold walk and I'd just as soon get back in my car and drive up into downtown or across the river just as if I was at the Gardens I could be to a bar or something in minutes. Now if we had that streetcar...

^What bar could you be at in five minutes coming from the Gardens? Club Ritz?

Molly Malone's, Gaslight, that other one in PRidge.

It's time to get back into the AHL.

^They were never in the AHL to begin with.  They were in the IHL, which folded.

^They were never in the AHL to begin with. They were in the IHL, which folded.

You are correct. The Cincinnati Cyclones were never in the American Hockey League (AHL). The original Cyclones were part of the ECHL in 1990. Eventually owner Doug Kirchofer purchased an International Hockey Leage franchise (IHL (not the same IHL that exists today)), sold his ECHL franchise and moved the Cyclones branding/logos/etc over to his new IHL team. At the time the AHL/IHL were about on par talent wise, both had teams that were independent and had NHL affiliates and were generally considered "AAA" levels of hockey. In 1996 Kirchofer purchased Riverfront Coliseum and moved the team downtown, at this time the Cincinnati Gardens got an American Hockey League franchise, called it the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and two AAA minor league hockey teams existed. Eventually the IHL Cyclones folded around 2001 and Kirchofer sold the arena to Neiderlander Entertainment. The Ducks continued, Neiderlander purchased the dormant Miami Matadors franchise and the Cyclones licensing and created the third franchise known as the Cyclones. This third team joined the ECHL, but folded again in April 2004. After the 2005 season the Ducks failed to reach an agreement with the parent club of Anaheim and rebranded their franchise. After a debacle of securing a new affiliate agreement, the Cincinnati Railraiders never played a game as they had no parent club to help foot the bill. Cincinnati was without a team. Neiderlander then brought their dormant Cyclones franchise back for the 06-07 season, this is the franchise you see today.

The current IHL is the former UHL and is generally considered "AA" along with the ECHL also being "AA."

I was actually aware of the history, the point is that Cincinnati should have at least AAA level hockey.

^I'd support that, but only if the Cyclones move up a level.  I don't think there is enough demand for two minor league hockey teams to be successful in this town.

  • 2 months later...

On cylconeshockey.com there is a press-release about a new affiliation with the Florida Panthers. The new AHL affiliation is with the Americans which is Weber's new coaching gig. Not present in the press release is that we are no longer affiliated with the Canadiens but are retaining our Predators affiliation.

I'd rather have kept the Canadiens affiliation because of their history but I guess there's no reason to complain. Does anyone know how it works with retaining players with a new affiliation? Minor league hockey is such a different beast than baseball.
