From the vault: some NYC cityscape views on a not-so-average day in 2004 (Republican National Convention).  Route went up 6th Avenue, east on 34th and then down Broadway to Union Square (though I walked much of it backwards).

Don't we marchers look silly now with the war going so well...

Anyhow:

Some protest sarcasm.

Uh oh, some masked "anarchist" losers light someone's paper mache on fire and toss some cherry bombs...

So NYC's finest start moving in...

Some on horses...

And start building a wall and blocking people in.

I got a bit freaked and jumped over a barrier to get out of the middle.

The whole scene was being enjoyed from above by these FootLocker employees.

The crowd keeps building and things stay a little tense...

But then the blockade ends and we continue down Broadway, passing the Flatiron Building (what a gem).

Who woulda thunk it, but not everyone in NY really wanted the RNC rallying in their town.

wow, that's tense. i like how they tell a story.

as for the last guy, it wasnt *that* bad having so many people in town. still, i kind of agree with him, i dont think nyc is the best place for either party to have a political convention. nor for the olympics for that matter.

"Corporations are people too!" lmao I love stuff like that

I was at the convention. I enjoyed the convention, but stepping outside was like going into a war zone. But New York was nice. Trips to Ground Zero, the Empire State Building, Saks, Bloomingdales, Fifth Avenue, Central Park! Great convention and trip! I hope Columbus has a shot at getting the 2008 RNC, but we have some pretty tought competition.

I love the show of pure force of the NYPD.  Always have had a liking for those types of displays....maybe some parades like the Chinese are needed where you parade as much artilerly around as possible.

That was a fun time.  I went to visit a friend in Manhattan that weekend.  I got off the train at Penn Station around 9:30 PM, and was greeted by hordes of police with bulletproof vests and machine guns.  Proceeding toward the 1/9 subway station under Seventh Avenue, I remember a line of police forming a human wall in front of the Seventh Avenue entrance to Penn Station, and effectively blocking the escalators to the LIRR tracks.

Kinda bonkers until you got through the station and onto the subway.

i got off the train from work monday at union square and landed right smak in the middle of the immigration rally. it was more like a party tho. a colorful, hyper crowded party. tons 'o cops.

Yeah, it's fun until they over-react and start arbitrarily arresting people. Seriously, I 'm not sure such displays are really needed anymore in New York; it's a pretty safe city in general (per capita incidence of murder, rape and all serious property crimes is actually lower than the national average, not just low for big cities: see http://www.cityrating.com/citycrime.asp?city=New+York&state=NY)...and aside from the small group of punk kids who threw the fire crackers and quickly ran away, peace marchers aren't much of a threat to law and order.

The funniest thing I saw that day was a dumb-lookin' fat bald guy in a white tank top standing on the sidewalk pointing at all the families and yuppies and students walking by in the march and yelling "freak show!" over and over. Ahh, sweet irony. Wish I had taken a video of that.

Ten years later....LOL. You should have seen when the Klan had their little rally in Cleveland the day the Browns returned in 1999, though some of us had the cops laughing at our references to cousins and farm animals and that may have spoiled the show a bit.
