Now unless the new stadium site is the West Bank parking lot mecca, we better get back on topic.

Might be too small for the Browns, but I like it for a soccer stadium!

On a browns note, Haslam is under investigation with the feds again.

A retractable roof sure would be nice on a day like today.

^ I respectfully disagree. Give me this, over playing on a carpet in an air-conditioned warehouse, any day.

Any reason they are attending this game - maybe to see how much they can contribute

Already have one stadium obstructing the waterfront, don't need another.

I went to the game today and I was reminded of how hard it is to get to the stadium.  And it has nothing to do with it being on the lake and we definitely don’t need (it would awesome, but it’s not a necessity) a land bridge.  The stadium is right on a major highway, yet all the exits are closed.  The stadium is right on a public transit stop, but RTAs website says it wasn’t running today.  Stadium is surrounded by vacant land, but you can’t park there.  Yes you can go early.  Yes you can get dropped off and walk a half mile.  But it really doesn’t have to be this hard.

Drove past and RTA was definitely running, so not sure why they listed it as that. But yeah, every exit is closed and it is a pain.

To be fair that on ramp /section of the freeway shouldn't exist. It's a nightmare.

There was a closed door meeting in Haslams suite with Goodell, Dewine, County and City reps an hour before the game. So you can put two and two together there.

Feels like the I-team has talked to everyone but the city and the browns which are the two groups everyone else seems to be waiting on as well. which also everyone saying the browns and city haven’t said anything can’t possibly be true especially since the governor and goodell were at the game together. All this lead up makes me think it’s something beyond a renovation

I know the game is in Houston, but based on the current weather, they should seriously consider a stadium with a roof, and preferably a retractable roof.

Nope.   It's a big home field advantage against teams that never practice/play in cold weather.

lol based on what?

Half the Browns roster isn't from cold areas like Cleveland. They don't spend time in Cleveland during the start of the off season when it's freezing cold. And the browns don't practice in this crap weather either, they go inside to practice.

The Browns hate playing in crap weather just as much as any other Dome or Southern team

How has an open air stadium played to the Cleveland Browns advantage??? Maybe a dome is EXACTLY what the Cleveland Browns franchise and the city of Cleveland both need???

I don't know if it is or will be a factor for the Browns new stadium, but I find it hard to believe that the NFL isn't demanding (either directly or indirectly) teams to replace old stadiums with domed stadiums.  Cold weather games typically result in lower attendance, lower scoring games, the possibility of relocating or delaying games, and (of lesser concern to the NFL) higher injury to players.  None of these are insurmountable of course, but I would imagine if the NFL can pressure cities, and counties to spend extra for a domed stadium in order to protect their bottom line, they would be.  I mean, why not?  It's not costing the NFL anything.

Just keep it downtown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another thing is the NFL season has now gotten much longer.  The regular season goes into January and the conference championship games are at the end of January.  Hopefully the Browns will be playing more January football in the coming years.

I guess all this supposed pressure did not work in Buffalo.

That, and a profit-sharing mechanism in perpetuity (since the NFL won't let Cleveland receive direct equity).

The idea of the NFL pressuring owners for certain things untrue. The idea of persuading owners to get a dome has been debunked a few times (at least) in Buffalo. The NFL knows how to extort taxpayers but they don't extort owners.

Also re: delaying or relocating games - very few have been moved and they're typically only moving or delaying games when it's too dangerous for the public to get to the games (and tie up resources). Unless you dome an entire county, you aren't getting around a massive weather event.

Re: people not attending - if a team is good people will show up, shoot if they stink people will still be there. I was paying attention to tickets for the Bills this weekend and I was worried the stadium would be half empty but if a team is good, people will be there. If it's two 0-5 teams playing the stadium will be empty but it's probably still sold out (the only hit will be to the owners that lose out on concessions, otherwise NFL ticket revenue is profit shared - even playoffs - not to mention they're making boatloads more money from TV anyways).

Here's a photo from the Bills Indy in 2017 (the bills were 6-6 at the time):

Ever notice that no teams in the AFC North have domes, but 2/4 teams in the AFC South do?

It's the same reason you're seeing more school districts in Texas build two-tiered stadiums - the potential for extra revenue.

With the way things are trending it seems like extreme heat is more of a threat than cold.  In baseball the situation is obviously much worse. When all of our pro sports are played on artificial grass under artificial lights I think we’ve lost something.

The NFL isn’t mandating domes at this point though. Jimmy can spend whatever he wants but I’m really just concerned with what taxpayers get back from their contribution. I’m all for fans being more comfortable but I have a feeling even a dome would be rarely used.

I doubt there is support from taxpayers to pay for a dome stadium. Especially since the majority of people who attend games are not from the city of Cleveland or even Cuyahoga County. From KJP's recent reporting, it sounds like the Browns and city have agreed to a pretty extensive building rehab, which seems like a reasonable compromise to me. The Browns haven't made any official announcements but in their public statements they have always said they wanted to refurbish the existing stadium.

If Buffalo should have put a new stadium downtown, where they could very well do without a dome.

Building a new open air stadium in Orchard Park would be the equivalent of the Browns building one in the Chardon town square.   It's like they are asking for the stadium to be filled with lake effect snow!

One thing to consider on a dome vs open air, is that the NFL schedule has been expanding deeper into winter.

Not too long ago NFL season was only in fall, with playoffs in late Dec & early Jan with the Super Bowl in late Jan.

I remember the 14 game regular season ending in mid-December, two weeks of playoffs and the Super Bowl in mid-January,

Nothing much, but Mary Kay has seen the stadium plans.

is anyone watching the Lions vs. Bucs taking note of how pathetically dark and dreary it looks inside Ford Field? It makes me wonder if they’re using discounted fluorescent lighting.

I would hate to see the Browns forced indoors in a fixed roof stadium especially when half the season the weather is pretty great.

Agreed.  I think Football should be played outside in the elements.

Would a dome be instrumental in the site hosting more events, possibly a Superbowl, yes.  I wouldn't mind a partially domed or retractable situation.  I want something that provided the best fan experience for football as well and an income generator (hosting no football related events) so the site can start to pay for itself and be a catalyst for nearby development.

Agree! What’s strange to me is there seems to be no real momentum toward incorporating a domed or retractable roof stadium with the Convention Center. No studies, no real (visible)  lobbying effort, no mention of ROI…just crickets!!!

I wonder if the NFL could end the regular season a little earlier so the playoffs can occur before the weather gets really bad? Maybe start the season earlier. Maybe eliminate the bye week.

Mother nature would need to be consulted.  There is no date that would ensure games could be played in moderate weather.  On any given day, the weather in Dallas, Kansas City, Minnie, Chicago, Cleveland, Cinci, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Metro NY and DC Beltway could all vary widely.

Look at micro climates and nearby states.  The weather for games the third Sunday in November, that start at 1PM we could see the following; snow in metro Cleveland, while Buffalo is under a Blizzard watch, sleet in Pitt and 50 degrees in Cinci.  Parts of FL could be under a Hurricane watch.  You never know.

I find it interesting that we complained so much about the current Browns stadium being a waste by only being usable for a small part of the year and how a dome would be better and now it seems the tune is changing.

IIRC, a majority of people on this forum were in favor of a multi use stadium, with nearby connections, from the planning stages.

I support a domed stadium built away from the lake and connected to big hotels and light-rail.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Sounds promising. Maximizing the life of the current stadium and also keeping it DT after the s**t that was floated before about potential sites in the suburbs. Its going to be a big tax payer investment regardless so there needs to be some sort of ROI for the public which a stadium in the suburbs surrounded by 20k parking spaces doesn't offer.

Personally I'm a traditionalist and prefer outdoor stadiums, the indoor venues to me are largely sterile save for the dome in New Orleans. However I would like some additional protection from the elements for spectators and more cover over seated areas plus I'm not convinced a dome here will add enough events to make it worthwhile financially however if thats what they want to do and people support them going all out, I can roll with it too.

That being said though, there is playing in cold conditions and then there is playing in stupidly dangerous weather for extra bro points. Feet of snow in Buffalo where people are putting their lives at risk literally travelling to the venue, multiple people in Kansas City being hospitalized with hypothermia.

All of that commentary is us. We have nothing to show whether a roof is a good investment or not, which again is what’s strange.
