April 29, 200619 yr i love these. reminds me of austin. these are exactly the kinds of buildings they like to remake into coffee shops, bike shops, taco shops, antiques, etc. down there. so not just used car lots. definately buildings worth taking another look at and saving.
April 30, 200619 yr Adaptive Reuse! very funny. There's a used car lot right at the corner of Liberty and Reading that is being converted into payday loan joint. Now which direction are we going with that? :)
February 14, 20169 yr No, that's just Cincinnati law. Former business around UC closes? It first has to become a hookah bar before it can become something else.
February 15, 20169 yr yeah whats with all the hookah bars lately? same in ny. i thought there were no smoking laws. how do they get around that?
February 16, 20169 yr yeah whats with all the hookah bars lately? same in ny. i thought there were no smoking laws. how do they get around that? The law doesn't affect businesses that get most of their income from tobacco products. "Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago." - Warren Buffett

February 17, 20169 yr 3794.01(H) "Retail tobacco store" means a retail establishment that derives more than eighty percent of its gross revenue from the sale of cigars, cigarettes, pipes, or other smoking devices for burning tobacco and related smoking accessories and in which the sale of other products is merely incidental. "Retail tobacco store" does not include a tobacco department or section of a larger commercial establishment or of any establishment with a liquor permit or of any restaurant. 3794.03(E) Retail tobacco stores as defined in section 3794.01(H) of this chapter in operation prior to the effective date of this section. The retail tobacco store shall annually file with the department of health by January thirty first an affidavit stating the percentage of its gross income during the prior calendar year that was derived from the sale of cigars, cigarettes, pipes, or other smoking devices for smoking tobacco and related smoking accessories. Any retail tobacco store that begins operation after the effective date of this section or any existing retail tobacco store that relocates to another location after the effective date of this section may only qualify for this exemption if located in a freestanding structure occupied solely by the business and smoke from the business does not migrate into an enclosed area where smoking is prohibited under the provisions of this chapter. February 17, 20169 yr ah ok thanks. so they are just basically smoke shops, maybe with smoking areas for hookahs. it seems 'or of any restaurant' means no food or drink is allowed. just wondering because middle easterners love their tea and meze. traditionally it goes hand in hand with the hookah. offering that would probably move it out of retail and into restaurant world though. has anybody ever visited one of these joints?
February 17, 20169 yr ^ I went to a Hookah joint in the East Village probably 6 or 7 years ago. I seem to remember tea being involved, but no food.
February 17, 20169 yr ^ thats good to hear. i wonder where they draw the line exactly of it being considered a restaurant? i guess as long as there is no alcohol and no food it must be ok.
May 19, 20169 yr We just had a former Pizza Hut that's been vacant for at least 5 years convert to a Chinese restaurant. I'll get a pic next time I'm out doing code enforcement

I'll get a pic next time I'm out doing code enforcement Pizza Hut's aversion to windows is one of the things that's hurt the franchise imho. Interesting to see other concepts benefit from the anti-sunlight "hut."
May 19, 20169 yr Right by the Linndale speed trap, there's an old Burger King that first became a "games of skill" parlor and is now becoming... a hookah place. That street is already lined with them, one more and I think we have a Tobacco District on our hands. Doesn't bother me. If all these hookah places are doing that much business, good.
May 24, 20169 yr Two gems from Cincinnati's West Side... Tanning in a former Hardee's (I think): Electrical union training center in a former Circuit City:
