October 24, 201311 yr Does this have anything to do with the parking garage conversion? Maybe, but while the TJ Maxx opens up to the the old Tower Place mall, it is actually a separate building and isn't owned by the city as far as I know. It is weird though as it seemed pretty packed all the time for a TJ Maxx.
October 25, 201311 yr How about in the evenings and on weekends? Saturday is a big big day in retail.
October 25, 201311 yr When it was announced that TJ Maxx was building a new store in Newport, I just assumed that meant the demise of the downtown store. When these retailers scout locations, they're just looking at the population, income, etc in a given radius. With the drive time overlay they established for the Newport location, they probably assume they'll still catch the downtown population. A big free surface parking lot, and a location next to other big box retailers probably just seems like a no brainer for them. I think that store was driven by mid day worker traffic, whereas the Newport location will probably more closely match their normal peak times of nights and weekends. I hope something will go in to the TJ spot quickly, and that whatever does locate there has more of a presence on 4th street. TJ Maxx was almost invisible on 4th.
November 13, 201311 yr Saks, leaves downtown. Interesting that this final decision came AFTER the election. I would assume they figured any deal with Mallory would be null & void. http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2013/11/13/saks-fifth-avenue-leaving-downtown.html
November 13, 201311 yr Saks Fifth Avenue leaving downtown Cincinnati for Kenwood Collection Saks Fifth Avenue will leave downtown Cincinnati to open a new store at the Kenwood Collection. As the Business Courier reported in September, developer Phillips Edison & Co., the owner of Kenwood Collection, has been working to land the upscale department store as an anchor for the retail portion of the long-stalled mixed-use project. Phillips Edison announced Wednesday morning it has a signed letter of intent from Saks to lease about 80,000 square feet of space over two levels of the building that overlooks Interstate 71. November 15, 201311 yr Well, fact is Downtown dwellers just don't zombie-shop like suburbanites do. It's almost kind of like people who really care about music raging out over pop music and nu-country selling well while "real music" flounders. Meanwhile, the music hounds only buy used records, download stuff and share it for free amongst themselves, while the pop zombies religiously buy CDs every time they go to Target. Ask a city dweller what they did last weekend and you'll hear, "Well, we got up Saturday and ran for 1 1/2 hours, went to the museum, spent $150 on dinner at a nice restaurant, then we caught a show. Friday we got drinks and dinner at a new pub in the Arts District. And Sunday we relaxed around the house then went to a coffee shop for 4 hours. We did stop at the vintage clothing store for a few minutes but didn't see anything we liked." Hey suburbanite what did you do? "Duh! I shopped all Saturday. You know, like I do every Saturday. Also Sunday I had a lot of purchases I had to get out of the way."
December 19, 201311 yr Northgate Mall to add movie theater The owners of Xscape Theaters are working to bring a 14-screen movie theater to the site of the former JC Penney store at Northgate Mall, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Alliance Management Co. applied with the Colerain Township Zoning Department for a 58,171-square-foot theater with entrances from the parking lot and the mall containing 1,570 seats, concession stands and a party room. May 8, 201411 yr Bang & Olufsen opens Downtown store Bang & Olufsen, the Danish luxury consumer electronics retailer, recently opened its Downtown Cincinnati showroom. It's one of 50 U.S. locations, and the only store in the Midwest, for the company, which carries audio, video and multimedia products such as televisions, music systems and speakers. A plug-and-play line, geared to younger urbanites, includes headphones, as well as streaming and portable music systems. Available "smart home" systems range from simple to complex and can control everything from music to temperature to gates and more, according to Per Bokmand, who owns the new showroom with business partner Carlos Navarro. May 8, 201411 yr Huh. Sadly, my first thought is they'd do better in Kenwood. Hope that turns out not to be the case! Anyone know how the improvements on 4th Street might affect foot traffic near their location at 6 W. Fourth?
May 9, 201411 yr Here's their website: http://www.bang-olufsen.com/en From the looks of it, they look more like a home customization type of store. Their showroom is 2,200 sq. ft., and if I'm not mistaken is in a townhome downtown? So I think they are building off that vibe ~ a high-quality, high craftsmanship product for finer homes and young professionals. Especially young professional millennials. I'm assuming they figured the type of young professionals that would be most likely to buy their products because they would be ones that are more socially active, more involved in the community, more likely to have parties and social gatherings in their apartments or condos, etc. So looking straight at a target market of OTR, Mt. Adams, Northside, Clifton, Oakley, Covington, and Hyde Park. I can see this working well, now to get some better advertising / name recognition...
May 9, 201411 yr I can see this working well, now to get some better advertising / name recognition... Better Name recognition? Bang & Olufsen has been THE celebrity name brand decades. I've always thought of a metro area having a Bang & Olufsen store as more of a status symbol than IKEA. I still remember the first time I was walking through Phipps Plaza in Atlanta past Versace and Prada stores. It wasn't until I saw the Bang & Olufsen store that I said to myself, "Wow, this place has money." They're SO high end that they can locate wherever the heck they want and people with money will pay the valet parking to shop there.
May 9, 201411 yr Do these $50,000 speakers make bad songs into good songs? A million years ago, I got some new speakers & a guy told me they made records he didn't like sound good. I don't know what $300 equates to nowadays but I don't think it's $50k and if you're playing MP3s....
May 9, 201411 yr Hey I've been in a listening room at a hi-end place on the upper east side, and heard what a $100,000 stereo system sounds like in a custom-built space. It really does sound incredible. Better than a live performance because live performances are rarely in perfect rooms with sound men who know what they're doing. My guess is that the benefit of the hi-tech brainpower that goes into producing hi-end audio equipment is mostly lost when the room itself isn't ideal, which in a typical house or condo it isn't. Like taking a sports car on a gravel road.
May 9, 201411 yr That is sweet and the only Midwest store! That's like Jay-Z and Beyoncé only show is here. Epic! But I'll stick with my Bowers & Wilkins.
May 9, 201411 yr That is sweet and the only Midwest store! That's actually a lie (surprise surprise, the Enquirer didn't fact check) as there are three in Chicagoland, one outside of Minneapolis, and one in Kansas City. Still, it's a big deal for us to have one.
May 10, 201411 yr Great addition to downtown Cincinnati! The local franchisee of the store is listed on their website (http:// beocincinnati. com/) as being 6W4 Smart Homes, Inc.

Glad I'm not in the know then - I'm too "middle America" for stuff like that (and proud of it). If I had an extra $50k lying around I sure as heck would not spend it on a sound system. Not while people are still living in poverty around the world, historic buildings are being carelessly bulldozed, and neighborhoods are being torn apart. But if they can make it, power to them.

August 19, 201410 yr Developer: Saks not heading to Kenwood Collection Phillips Edison & Co. said Tuesday that it is no longer pursuing a lease with Saks Fifth Avenue for retail space in The Kenwood Collection. The Sycamore Township-based real estate developer had been in negotiations with the luxury department store chain for more than a year. It was announced in November that Saks would leave its Downtown location once a new store was built at the mixed-use development along Interstate 71 at Galbraith Road. Cont "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
August 19, 201410 yr Things Seemed very very odd to me for months now that no retail tenants had been announced since Saks so I'm shocked but then I'm not. So I would assume Tiffany's is not going to Kenwood Collection either and I'm wondering will this mean a major renovation of Saks Downtown location?
August 20, 201410 yr I think one of the conditions in the letter of intent that Saks signed was probably that the Kenwood Collection had to secure X amount of other luxury retailers in order for them to move. My guess is that, since very few tenants have been announced, Saks didn't seem confident that this goal could be met and decided to back out. My concern is that this could mean the departure of Saks from this region all together. I seem to remember reading that Saks as a whole was struggling and that they were downsizing, or at least no longer expanding. I also know that the Saks in Downtown Pittsburgh closed and they chose not to relocate elsewhere in the region, so it's not like such a move would be without precedent. I really hope today's announcement means that Saks is committing to downtown, and that they are going to renovate their store. However, I haven't seen anything that says "we are committed to downtown", or really anything to indicate that they are committed to staying in the Cincinnati market.
August 20, 201410 yr Having worked in commercial real estate for a big box department store in the past, I can say with certainty that the lack of additional anchor stores in the Kenwood Collection had to make their team nervous. Very few stores like that can succeed without at least two, usually three anchors. Wouldn't be surprised if this means KC was asking for a high premium on rent and CAM charges that didn't fit with the current ecosystem of tenants.
August 20, 201410 yr Saks staying in downtown Cincinnati, for now Tom Demeropolis Reporter- Cincinnati Business Courier Saks Fifth Avenue will continue to operate its downtown Cincinnati store for the foreseeable future. A spokeswoman for the high-end department store wrote in an emailed statement, “After further review of the opportunity to relocate our existing Saks Fifth Avenue store currently located in the city of Cincinnati, we have elected to remain in our downtown location.” http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2014/08/20/saks-staying-in-downtown-cincinnati-for-now.html
August 21, 201410 yr With the Bang & Olufsen store on 4th Street, if you squint really hard you can see the beginnings of a luxury retail zone, but mostly it's just unrealized potential at this point. With 3CDC now managing the 4th and Race project in addition to the dunnhumby Centre, they're in a position to be oversee a significant chunk of retail space in that area. If done properly, it might just work. We'll have to wait and see how successful 3CDC is at attracting retail tenants. The newly vacated TJ Maxx spot adds to a lot of empty retail space along 4th and along Race St.
August 21, 201410 yr Currently on 4th now that TJ Maxx is gone it feels very empty right there... especially when you consider Mabley Place not being open yet... hopefully they can find a tenant or two for that development.. otherwise you will have that empty... much of the McAlpin building empty and the TJ Maxx space empty. But between 4th and Race and Dunhumby plus Renaissance hotel all going on that is bound to change.

November 6, 201410 yr I'm ready to be one stylist construction worker...even though I work in an office.
January 7, 201510 yr After a recent remodeling of the ground floor retail space, 14 E 4th St. will soon soon be the new home of April Florist & Gifts. They currently have a very small space in the Tri-State Building on Walnut St. next to Simon Says, which I'd bet is looking to expand. It'll be nice to see a business open in this stretch of the block. Unfortunate that Bruegger's was forced to close last year... January 7, 201510 yr I agree. I was walking that way the other day with my Mother (as a post holiday visit from her from Dayton) and that entire area just seems so ripe for some retail offering. I don't know if it's the density or what, but it just seems like there could naturally be a really high-end vibe from 4th street if the right type of clothing and retail outlets popped up there. I also have noticed how much brighter 4th street is lit up at night than a lot of the other downtown streets... I'm not sure if it's because they replaced the street lights with LED's or if it's just denser so the lights reflect off of the building. Regardless, my mom hasn't been downtown in a while, so we were just mosy-ing around and she was REALLY, REALLY impressed (almost jealous) of downtown Cincy. I think 4th street is ripe for some high-end retail. Anyone else?

I hope eventually it winds up being something like the area around Union Square in San Francisco which has about the same level of historic architecture though on a much bigger scale. That's just a dream though - one of all too many fantastic pedestrian districts in Cincinnati that are completely and utterly underutilized... Though I am very happy that at least East Walnut Hills (DeSalles Corner) finally has some activity these days that was another such district that made me scratch my head as to why it wasn't more popular... Time will tell what happens on 4th street.
