When I worked in the Kroger video dept people were always dropping their Blockbuster videos in our drop-box.  Then they'd get pissed because we didn't drive them over to Blockbuster immediately while they were getting fined.  That's not an issue anymore.

Would much rather see this store in Liberty Center than just 3 miles south of its larger store in Kenwood.

Fire ravages Downtown store

Cincinnati fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire they say destroyed the inside a Downtown business early Tuesday.

Bang & Olufsen at 6 W. Fourth St. lost an estimated $100,000 to $250,000 in equipment, they said.

The business sells high-end electronics.

Fire officials said crews fought two or three Dumpster fires when they first arrived and then found a man in an alley and another inside one of the buildings, with his dog, on the second floor.

holy crap, that is probably the type of store that could least handle the effects of a fire of any size that i could think of. i'm sure they have insurance, but the thought of all that wrecked well designed high end audio merch is painful.

^ I know, I was thinking the same thing!

I looked inside yesterday and the place was completely destroyed. it was a serious fire, they had guys in there cleaning it out.

^ Interesting reasons to choose Cincy.

^ Interesting reasons to choose Cincy.

Very pleased to read these reasons.  However, one quote from the Business Journal article really startled me...

"Cincinnati ranked ninth nationally for retail spending at $67.7 billion"

Something wrong here; no way this could be true!  However, within the Kenwood Collection's own promo brochure PDF, I discovered an oval figure encircling Cincinnati-Dayton-Louisville as a region, plus the retailing $$ figure from above.  Only then did the quote make sense.

The owners of the center consider that the building's service area. Whereas a smaller shopping center may only have a three-county service area. A lot of times they are split into primary and secondary service areas. Dayton, Louisville and Indiana would be the secondary service areas for this development -- though with high-end furniture the secondary may actually be more primary. Right now, until the Columbus Ikea opens, Columbus may be in the primary service areas for both the Cleveland and Cincinnati Ikeas.

That sucks. Saks will probably be next...question is will they completely abandon the market like they did in Pittsburgh?

oh no.

cripe retail is seriously going through changes these days.

i’d hate to be in that business.

That sucks. Saks will probably be next...question is will they completely abandon the market like they did in Pittsburgh?

They still have six other locations in the region (Anderson Town Center, Kenwood Towne Centre, Northgate Mall, Florence Mall, Kenwood Furniture and Tri-County Mall).  I remember reading somewhere when they first announced the downtown one was closing that the Kenwood location is one of their most profitable ones in the country.

^I think the comment was about *Saks* potentially abandoning the Cincinnati market entirely.

I think part of the delay for the 4th & Race apartments has to do with the eventual exit of Sak's  That will enable a footprint for a new development 50% larger than the current one.  I think the Hyatt's ballroom(s) are above the Sak's store so a new project would be fairly complicated.  Also, there is a parking entrance to the Hyatt's valet that presumably would have to stay open.

The Sak's valet guys:

These 2 national retailers are coming to Over-the-Rhine

bonobosover-the-rhine*750xx2048-1155-0-342.jpg

Two national retailers are opening locations in Over-the-Rhine.

Warby Parker and Bonobos have both signed leases for retail space along Vine Street in the historic neighborhood just north of Cincinnati’s Central Business District. The retailers took spaces in buildings controlled by Cincinnati Center City Development Corp.

Officials with 3CDC declined to comment. Messages were sent to both retailers but neither responded immediately.

This is very unlike 3cdc...to bring in national chains that is...I wonder if they are changing up there strategy for otr?

National chains may be the only ones left that can afford the rent.

Does 3cdc not control the rent prices?

Maybe they are now allowing national retailers because they haven't had tremendous luck with local ones. There are a few that have been around for a long time and seem to be doing well, but there has also been a lot of failures. On the other hand, local restaurants have been doing great, so 3CDC might be less interested in having national restaurant chains (or, say, a Starbucks) open in OTR.

Well increased foot traffic for mall-type tenants can only be good for other businesses in the area, but these places come and go without many people noticing them because they can't hang illuminated signs.

I think the reason for the lack of large signs is 3CDC, not the city. I believe 3CDC told American Legacy Tours that they were only allowed to have a window cling and no proper outdoor sign, because they didn't want it to "clutter up" Vine Street and detract from the other nearby signs (Holtman's, The Eagle, etc.). Meanwhile on Main Street, UrbanSites restored the historic Tower Furniture sign with new neon and it back up on the building.

Columbus-Based Pursuit Expanding to Cincinnati

There’s another in the list of businesses that Columbus and Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood now share. Columbus-based suit shop Pursuit is headed for the Queen City with its second storefront expected to open this fall at 1433 Vine St. in Cincinnati.

Launched as a class project by Founder Nate DeMars in 2011, Pursuit operated as a pop-up near Ohio State’s campus before moving to its Short North storefront at 937 N. High St. in 2015. Now the men’s retailer is expanding again, calling Over-the-Rhine an obvious first choice for their growth.

Kenwood Collection will be adding a Whole Foods Market

It looks like the long-awaited grocery store at Kenwood Collection will be a Whole Foods Market, not the originally planned 365 by Whole Foods.

It's true. Sometimes a retail space will get leased by a new retailer from the same industry as a previous tenant. A lot has changed at this site in the years since Kroger closed their store. I don't know if a Whole Foods will succeed here, but I don't think the fact that the Kroger wasn't successful here many years ago isn't necessarily a sign that Whole Foods will fail.

The whole thing was only half-baked when the Kroger was open in the late 2000s.
