Would much rather see this store in Liberty Center than just 3 miles south of its larger store in Kenwood.

I would rather they roll out small format Bloomingdale's locations in upscale markets rather than additional bland Macy's locations.

^Dude, your crazy!!!    I think 8 houses on my street own quads.  And I am in a suburb.

In Columbus, all the houses on your street would each have 3 quads.

Outdoor store opening in Over-the-Rhine

By Lisa Biank Fasig, Thursday, April 3, 2008

A shop catering only to the joys of outdoor living is opening in Over-the-Rhine, complementing the area's clutch of recently arrived stores that feature contemporary furniture and household items.  Called Outside, the store will sell furniture, decor and entertaining items for the patio and yard, from chaise lounges to acrylic drinkware and contemporary grills and accessories. It is scheduled to open at 16 E. 12th St., at the corner of 12th and Jackson, on April 5 at 11 a.m.

Terry Lee, a former director of visual merchandising at the late McAlpin's department store chain, is opening Outside following years of serving as a consultant in product design and development. His store in fact will feature products from one of the companies he still works with, Dayton-based Sticks + Stones.

Owner hopes new art gallery gives Fourth Street a pop

BY BRADEN LAMMERS | April 25, 2008

It is everything Warhol. Or at least, Warhol inspired.  Andrew Van Sickle is attempting to reinvigorate the Fourth Street art district with his new gallery, AVS Art. Located in a former jewelry store at 315 W. Fourth St., the space features pop art and opened April 14.

"I'm here to bring Fourth Street back," Van Sickle said.  Appealing to a broad range of people is key to his vision to rebuild an art district that thrived in the 1970s and '80s.  Van Sickle is primed for the challenge. He gained valuable experience working with artists and mentors Paul Warhola, Andy Warhol's older brother, and the Rev. Howard Finster, whom Van Sickle characterized as a "Warhol of the South."

A graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a marketing degree, Van Sickle describes himself as an "idea person" for artists. Despite the down economy, he thinks his plans to use marketing and cross-promotion to appeal to a variety of customers will help AVS Art become a fixture in Cincinnati.

Showcase Cinemas outlets close

THE ENQUIRER

Showcase Cinemas outlets in Bond Hill and Erlanger closed today, with signs directing visitors to other Showcase locations.

Spokeswoman Tracy King of National Amusements, operator of the Showcase chain, declined to comment.

She said the company would issue a statement .

The Showcase chain operates in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky at Kenwood Towne Centre, Cincinnati Mills, Springdale, Florence, Huber Heights, Western Hills, Milford and the Kings Island area.

The company is scheduled to open a 16-screen Cinema de Lux theater in Florence in July.

National Amusements, based in Dedham, Mass., operates more than 1,500 screens internationally under its Showcase, Cinema de Lux, KinoStar and Multiplex brands.

These two closed out of the blue today.  I figured Bond Hill would close some day, but Erlanger was a surprise.  Maybe they should bring back drive-in's ;) Any others close in Ohio today?

Those were old and increasingly gross theatres. I'd be curious to see if National Amusements speeds up their search for a spot along the 71 corridor since Millworks isn't moving at all. Unfortunately the spot next Circuit City is probably too small for a movie theatre.

The Erlanger one is not a surprise as the new stadium seating Cinema De Lux (the high-end Showcase, which usually includes a full service bar in the lobby - one is in Springdale) is opening in Florence, and will have more screens with the modern amenities.  If Millworks in Oakley ever gets going, they plan a Cinema De Lux there as well.  I thought they would keep Bond Hill open until then.

It looked pretty 'closed' a month ago when I was in that 'hood.

I heard this closed because of Bedbugs.

Yup, I'm heading there tonight for their opening.  Hopefully it stops raining.

^This will be a fun place, I bet. Great space filler for sure.

Well, I'm officially old.  I visited that website and 1) I have no clue what makes "unheardof" appealing and 2) I'm a little annoyed that I don't "get it".  I mean, what's that chainsaw all about?  Something tells me this is what all the kids will be into now.  And I'm not even 30 yet.  Well, youth was fun while it lasted, I suppose.

The article breaks down why this place is appealing.  The website hasn't officially launched yet so that probably explains your confusion.

^ Then there's hope for me yet.  Thanks.

The opening attendance was a bit disappointing, but I believe it had more to do with the short timeframe of getting the word out.  Not only was unheardof impressive but there were two art galleries in the same block with openings.

Let me tell you:  THIS is exactly what I'd like to see more of in Cincinnati.  It's the kind of thing you see in places like Chicago and Lower Manhattan all the time.  Fourth Street is on its way to really being a true gem of the city.  Architecturally, it's already there...and thankfully.

What a great Friday evening that was.  I encourage everyone to show their support for these new businesses, whether it's your thing specifically or not.  The more people who come to these things, the more word-of-mouth will carry.  We can never have too much of that.

Enzo's: Don't Call It a Comeback

After a couple month hiatus, Enzo's, the OTR coffeehouse/lunch spot is back up and running.  The menu looks very similar to the old one (mmmm....paninis), but still no evening hours: 7:00am to 2:00pm.  We assume that, like before, Enzo's will stay closed on the weekends, but we hope they decide to experiment with, at least, Sunday brunch.

http://www.buycincy.com/2008/07/enzos-dont-call-it-a-comeback.html

Great news.

Enzo's did try some Saturday hours, so maybe that will come back at some point.

Great news, but those hours are terrible.  Not being an OTR resident, there is no point where I could even stop by Enzo's to see what it's like.

I am an OTR resident, and I still can't spend much time there.

Smart car dealer squeezes into Kings Automall

http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2008/09/15/daily39.html

The Smart Fortwo, that diminutive European auto known for its high gas mileage as well as its ability to park sideways against the curb, is pulling into Cincinnati with a dealership in Deerfield Township.

The dealership, at 9847 Kings Automall, is among three U.S. locations to open recently, the others being in Las Vegas and Birmingham, Ala.

I think the dealership has been there for a while? A co-worker bought one.

Is it legal to park sideways in all jurisdictions? It would be annoying to have to know the laws each city you park in. Parking sideways seems dangerous, unless you back into the spot the same way you parallel park - by going ahead of the spot first, then backing in.

Kings automall?  Barf

I think the dealership has been there for a while? A co-worker bought one.

probably from a dealer in Indy or C-Bus.  Does Louisville have one?  I thought they did.

I don't think you necessarilly need to buy them at a Smart dealer.  I know the Jeep Chrysler dealership by my house in Cleveland sells them, as I am sure several other dealers sell them.

As for buying one, I never would in CLeveland as the thing would do nothing for you in a Cleveland winter.  I looked at one, and had no idea how the thing would get through even three inches of snow...which obviously is pretty much standard in a winter up here.  They are basically like motorcycles. They can be driven in the summer on clean roads but obviously not the winter with snow and pothole roads...and I am not in the market for a seasonal car.

No, he bought it here. Had it since this summer.

Actually, I'd rather have a Stupid car.

I bought a 4 yr old car 5 years ago for under $12,000.00.  It gets 31 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg in the city.  So, for an extra 9 miles, it really would never be worth it to me based on the lack there of safety in these cars and not being able to drive it in a minimal snowfall.  I see a couple people every morning on 480 in Smart cars, and they are dwarffed by every other vehicle on the road.  Honestly, i don't know how one would make it out alive if involved in an accident with an SUV or even a mid sized sedan.  Bottom line, they are going to have to come out with something alot better than these to persuade me to buy one.  Oh, and also, I can't fit my wife and kids in it.

Crate & Barrel opening in less than two months

Crate & Barrel, the contemporary home furnishings chain, is on schedule to open its first Cincinnati store before the kick-off of the holiday shopping season.  Spokeswoman Bette Kahn said the store will open in November before Thanksgiving, but declined to be more specific. The two-story location will be the region’s first, and will anchor the developing Kenwood Towne Place at Interstate 71 and Galbraith Road in Sycamore Township. Other tenants at the development, many of which also will open in November, include Kroger Fresh Fare, the Container Store and Borders Books.

I saw a billboard that the Container Store in Kenwood opens in early October.  Forget the exact day.

  • 2 weeks later...

I saw another store front with a new sign in the window, and interior work being done on W. 4th Street.  It is immediately next to (west) of Unheardof, but unfortunately I forget the name.  Anyone have any insights?

yea, i saw it too.  i think i remember it being called Fanatic, but I dont really remember.

Smart cars are too big for me and the gas mileage sucks. My An600 averages 60 MPG.
