May 6, 200619 yr Moonloop, I walk thru that park fairly often. Today was very interesting though, it was a microcosm of many of OTR's problems and potential. As I entered one end of the park I noticed an apparent homeless person laying in the grass, but I checked myself and thought that just 2 days before I walked thru Sawyer Point park and saw an apparently employed person also laying in the grass, so I thought.. well it IS a park, people DO lay down in parks, so I moved on. To my right approached two city employees in orange safety vests picking up trash. Hooray I thought. Then as I came up to the beautiful gazebo I looked to my left and saw 4 CPD officers arresting or at least ticketing someone, part of the recent increase in that type of activity. I also thought, hooray (while aware that it was just feet away from the school). I moved on a short piece and engaged in a conversation with an elderly (I am assuming) local resident. We watched the 'arrest' and he layed a little old timers advice on me about this and that and even suggested we should have a 'dry' downtown. As I traveled a bit further I looked over to 12th Street and observed about a dozen folks of all stripes just 'hanging out', but sadly several with the omni present bottle-in-a-brown-paper-bag. I wondered what Erich Kuenzel would say if his SCPA was there, and why aren't they saying that same thing with Wash. Park School already there. (you notice I don't have any answers!) And finally I reached the corner of 12th and Race and watched the crews digging trenches and laying gas lines and watched another crew rehabbing the old 'Bank Cafe' building for future residences for the Art Academy students and I thought about how far that area has come in just the last two years, (12th and Vine) from almost constant drug trafficing to now new Gateway Condos, new art student housing and promise of major rehab a the NEC of 12th & Vine. And then finally I thought that in about a year I won't be able to see that, experience that, feel that because my department is moving to some stoopid warehouse freakin' cornfield building in Blue Ash where I will have to get in my stoopid car just to drive to a stoopid Arby's. ... and I was quite sad actually. So.... just another beautiful day in the neigborhood. aren't you glad you asked? ;)
May 6, 200619 yr ^ have you ever been to this? It is very interesting, under that paddlewheel are a series of "smoke stacks" in some type of geomertic pattern, most have speakers in them and each plays a different sound associated with the river front, wharf, warehouse, horses, etc. You can create your own reality by moving around within them. That's what these school kids were doing. It is very fun. Now in contrast.. West Chester has a.... has a.... a. a
May 6, 200619 yr How fantastic...great thread...I've maybe seen half of those, tops...I need to explore more...

I'm sorry to hear that. :( I'd be extremely disappointed if I were in the same situation. Great pictures, though!
May 6, 200619 yr I feel your pain about getting shipped out of DT Cincy. I worked in the Queensgate area about five years ago and enjoyed immensely my walks on the bridges(that included watching PBS getting built), 3th, 4th, getting an up-close view of the flood of '97 and to the library. Then our NKY president had the bright idea of expanding to a larger building. Mayor Qualls and the city were useless. We weren't big enough to justify their assistance so we built a new place in NKY. The president was quickly replaced and my company nearly went under. We're back on solid footing, but the only highlight now is the occasional wild turkey trying to get into the building.
May 6, 200619 yr Fantastic thread. You got all of the good ones, there. I'm going to miss that dragon, too.
May 8, 200619 yr ^ well - the whole building is being repainted that 'interesting' green color. and frankly the old boy was looking his age. Someone can correct me but sometime back in the 70's there was some sort of project to paint giant murals on the sides of many buildings. Most are now gone, I'm thinking old "Puff" there and this one below here may be the only ones left. And this one is now concealed by the Enquirer building garage, you can see it if you go down this alley.
May 11, 200619 yr Very Nice. I have only lived in Cincinnati a month and I am enamored by all that this beautiful city has to offer. Just when I thought I have seen it all (I live downtown and I walk everywhere), something else comes along and makes me fall in love with this city even more. Great thread. http://www.cincynati.com
May 11, 200619 yr OTRFan, these are great. I have seen 90% of them but you managed to show me a couple I missed out on. Well done and great idea for a thread. Your contribution to Urban Ohio has been a pleasure!
May 12, 200619 yr Great thread OTRFan. The only mural left from the early 70's "urban walls" project is actually on the east facade of the Jewelery Exchange Building at the SE corner of 7th & Race. (I'm not sure it does anything for me.) I don't think the dragon was a part of that. A great website for Cincy's downtown public art can be found at: http://www.idiotech.com/oacdocs/oachome.html Go to "Index" for a list.
