June 13, 200619 yr There's several gyms downtown. They include at CSU (Woodling Gymnasium), at One Cleveland Center (St. Clair at East 9th), at the Cleveland Athletic Club ( www.clevelandathleticclub.com ), the downtown YMCA, the Club at Key Center and most downtown hotels have fitness facilities. I found this blog written by from someone from New York City, but it has some worthwhile links.... http://www.cjc.org/blog/archives/2004/10/24/gyms-in-downtown-cleveland/ "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 13, 200619 yr the big daddies like Bally's tend to be out in the burbs. we checked out this before we moved to a condo with a gym (also CSU has a new gym opening real soon, of not already so) http://www.clevelandathleticclub.com/legacy.html they may have specials. There are others downtown cannot think of names (some quite pricy) .... Believe me it is only a matter of time before there are more afordable choices. I was hanging out with some neighbors tonight and was surprised that a handful drive to the suburbs to go to the gym -so the market is here, the industry just needs to catch up. glad you liked the Market. Mondays are a good intro day, not too chaotic. Wednesdays are my favorite. everything is open, but crowds not bad. Fridays are busy, and Saturdays crazy! wait till you get to know the vendors (except many or the produce ones, a whole other story)They will treat you like gold. not exactly your Publix! I think the bars in the warehouse area are generally more pricey. most are night clubs. for a pub atmosphere try the Little Bar and Grill off on side street of w6th (great cheeseburgers and respectable wings). Either way you can do some serious bar hopping there. Some how my heart is in Ohio city, even though I am nearly equal distance b/t the two. My young whipper snapper neighbors seem to gravitate to w.6th (warehouse) as much as OC.
June 13, 200619 yr Another downtown gym is Fitworks - it depends on what all you want. I'm not a spa/pool/sauna user nor do I need a track, so the downtown Fitworks suits my needs. http://www.fitworks.com/locations.asp One word of advice - do NOT hesitate to go to one place and when they ask you to sign up, tell them "______ was willing to sign us up for $10 less a month - can you beat that?". Negotiate them down and don't be afraid to walk. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
June 13, 200619 yr FYI on the Warehouse District Panini's and Nauti Mermaid on W.6th, and Johnny's Little Bar on Frankfort (which is an alley that runs perpendicular and next to Johnny's Bistro Downtown) are the most casual places in the Warehouse District without cover and pretty good prices on drinks. I especially like Johnny's Little Bar, because it is a cool authentic 'neighborhood' bar in the Warehouse District. The Chophouse, which is a pretty nice place, has a really nice happy hour from 4-7 with 22 oz. drafts of their homemade micro-brew at $3, and half price apitizers. I'm not sure what their regular prices are. Hyde Park is a very nice restaurant and bar- not in the Warehouse District, but very close in the Landmark Building next to Tower City on Prospect- has $4 martinis during happy hour. I like it a lot because I think it is reminiscent of the old school Cleveland with a lot of people wearing suits and everyone smoking; even cigars. Bar Flyy and Velvet Dog dance clubs on W.6th have reasonably priced drinks and NO COVER. I'm not a huge fan of dance clubs, but I'd probably prefer Bar Flyy. Velvet Dog, however has an outside bar and deck on the roof-top with incredible views and is a definate must-do in the Warehouse District. I went to Mercury Lounge a few weeks ago, but don't remember if there was cover or not. I don't think there was, but it is definately a cool Miami style atmosphere. Drinks were a little pricey there if I remember correctly. Sushi Rock is awesome about anytime of the week, but Wednesday nights especially get packed with a good crowd for half-off sushi. I've only been back in town and 21 for a few weeks now, and I'm not completely aware of all the prices at bars and places. I still know its pretty difficult to get ripped off in Cleveland based on my experience at other cities. I wouldn't hesitate at all to check a place in the Warehouse District for drinks. By the way, there is a taxi stand on W.6th, but late one Friday night when I was there I didn't see any cabs hanging around there. My friends and I waited a couple minutes and flagged a cab down to take us all the way to Westlake, and considering the distance it was a reasonable fare with no problem.
June 13, 200619 yr Thanks all. My g/f will be happy. Correction as to my house as well. It's on Bridge ave a little west of w 28th. Such a great spot, I wish I didn't have law school to worry about. Oh well, I'm moving up there the first week of july, school starts august 14th so at least I get a good month in. I seriously am in love with Cleveland. I don't know if you all are aware, but it gets a bad rap for some reason.
June 13, 200619 yr I don't know if you all are aware, but it gets a bad rap for some reason. Welcome to Cleveland!!! Cleveland gets a bad rap?! You gotta be kidding me?! The people who are often guilty of giving the city a bad rap...are those who live here. The city's (and NEO Region) reputation and image is starting to change and with people like you moving to our great city....the city can only get better! Good luck with law school...the new crib.....and life in general! Oh......and don't be a stranger to the East Side!
June 27, 200618 yr Anyway, my girlfriend wants to know where the best gym would be in terms of location and amount of equipment. Anyone know? I had a membership at the HFC Athletic Club at the Cleveland One Center on East 9th Street http://www.cleveland.hfitcenter.com/ until I became a student and had free gym access. They were really great there - not intimidating at all - and had good facilities (swimming pool, outdoor track, etc.) and classes. It is mostly a lunch-hour gym and it does get kind of busy at lunch, but other than that I would highly recommend it!
June 28, 200618 yr "I don't know if you all are aware, but it gets a bad rap for some reason." hahaha. I just saw this. No comment. It made me laugh out loud for real. If you do check this thread out, welcome to Cleveland! I didn't see where you're moving from. Just curious. I don't care what anyone says, Cleveland kicks ass.
June 28, 200618 yr try the old Tower City fitness, now called "rezultz" or something like that. Nice new owner and free parking under tower city if you use the flats entrance. Clean. Reasonable. Small local biz, not a chain.

Guess I'm naive on the whole Cleveland issue. I'm coming from West Palm Beach, FL (can't stand it) and, I agree, I love Cleveland. I love CSU, the city with barely any traffic problems, the great public transportation, the bars, the cheap housing, the people, the sports, all the diversity of the neighborhoods and, most of all, Ohio City. I'll be settling in on the 2800 block of Bridge Ave around July 12th.
June 28, 200618 yr Welcome to the OC LGR! We'll be neighbors! I'm about a block from you! Thanks. Maybe I can join in on one of those Urbanohio tours you guys do before school starts and sucks the life out of me.
June 28, 200618 yr Thanks all for the gym ideas. Anyone used CSU's new gym and rec center? I can use that for free so I'm anxious to check it out. I hear there's a gym, swimming pool, basketball court etc..
June 28, 200618 yr ^the new rec center won't open up until August, i believe. According to the developer of the old YMCA building on Franklin in Ohio City..he wants to turn three floors of the old building into a gym/fitness center (the rest will be lofts). He says that it should cost about $35 per month and members would have a key card that allow access. It wouldn't be a full scale fitness center.
June 28, 200618 yr ^ That is desperately needed in The O.C. (a fitness center). I heard, though, that he won't keep the pool because of liability issues? That's a shame but I guess I understand.
June 28, 200618 yr As of yesterday, the developer hadn't completely ruled out the pool, but I wouldn't bet on it.

That's a shame but I guess I understand. city of Cleveland residents can also use any of the city rec centers . cudel has an indoor pool. Isnt there an outdoor pool in tremont? I know at one pt it was closed on weekends due to funding.
