Posted May 12, 200619 yr Ya know those billboards that are all over the Cincinnati area proclaiming that "God Listens"? I think its an ad for Mike McConnell on Am 700. I heard on the radio today that one of them got some additional verbage added by some graphitti artists so that it reads "God Listens to Slayer". Has anyone seen this? I heard its on the west side. I would LOVE a pic of it if anyone has seen it.
May 12, 200619 yr This is true, I used to see it in the morning on my way to work. It was on River Road in Riverside, facing west just before the "S" curve between Lillianthall and Hillside. It was a black billboard with white lettering that said "God Listens to Mike McConnell" with the WLW logo under it. The person used black spraypaint to mark out "Mike McConnell" and with a different color added "Slayer". They put up a new one with the same ad very quickly, but I noticed this morning it's been replaced by a different billboard. Sorry...No pictures
August 15, 200717 yr WLW under fire again BY JOHN KIESEWETTER | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER August 14, 2007 CINCINNATI - A second WLW-AM promotional campaign in four months has prompted a national Hispanic organization to demand the resignation of Clear Channel market manager Chuck Fredrick. A WLW-AM (700) promotion offering “helpful phrases” to communicate with illegal aliens, with Mexican music in the background, is proof that Fredrick “reneged on his commitment” to “prevent future offensive materials” on the station after removing its “The Big Juan” billboards in May, says Brent A. Wilkes, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) national executive director. Click on link for more information.
August 15, 200717 yr As a Latino, I think.. “Be careful with those hedge clippers around the garden.” ... is hilarious! Although I'm not Mexican, I can understand the community's distrust and concern. Jason Riveiro, the league’s Cincinnati-based Ohio deputy director, says the promotion is “insulting” because of the stereotype, and because of the background music implying that all illegal aliens are Hispanic. Aint that the truth!
August 15, 200717 yr This is deserved ... When I heard the commercial, I was thinking it had very racist undertones.
August 15, 200717 yr Exactly. And, to the new reporters, he probably said "That's Fredrick, with just one E. Thanks for your attention." "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
August 15, 200717 yr I hate to sound like one of those "_________ was better in the old days" kind of folks, but it applies here. WLW was a solid radio station. Those don't really exist anymore, and I only listen to WLW for Reds games.
August 16, 200717 yr I agree. I don't listen to Reds games, tho. I actually remember Bill Cunningham being a respectable person handing out legal advice.
August 16, 200717 yr Bill Cunningham is a nationally recognized @$$**** and nothing more. A huge embarassment to Cincinnati.
August 16, 200717 yr ^I know people, locally, who enjoy him as an entertainer but think he is a complete buffoon. That people, locally, think he is the persona he puts forth is absolutely amazing. and sad When I say he was respectable was around 20 years ago.
August 18, 200717 yr He's on satellite radio. He's not just in the Cincinnati market. ... Satellite has not come of age yet, and it's still small ... C-Dawg, satellite radio has about 14 million subscribers ... lol. BTW, it's so small and has been so unsuccessful that Sirius is launching Mobile Satellite Video. David, somehow I doubt C-Dawg knew that the radio show was broadcast through satellite radio.
August 18, 200717 yr There are jerks like this in every major market, pandering to the hidden racist in everyone, hoping to strike a cord with one of their exaggerated stereotypes. A billboard with a Mexican on a donkey is a bit much for anywhere. Their marketing department sounds either brilliant in an evil way or just plain stupid. Some people who probably could have cared less will now listen out of morbid fascination, and others due to some twisted freedom of speech logic (aka racism they agree with, hidden under the constitution, to assuage their guilt), or just because they like low brow humor. In any event, the station has done what it set out to do: get publicity at any cost. The cost here was the dignity of the Mexican. Like I said, every market has jerks. Here they pick on Asians, Gays, East Indians, Afghanis, you name it. One advantage of a great ethnic diversity is that there is plenty of fuel for fire. A coworkers always had a shockjock station on at her workstation, nice and loud so we could all hear it. She said she thought it was pretty funny but agreed to keep the volume down low enough that we didn't have to hear it anymore. Although I really liked her, I just couldn't get past the fact that she really liked that type of humor. Thank god she left for a better paying job about a year ago.

People like Bill Cunningham thrive because people want to know what they're gonna say next. I don't think it's a reflection of the type of people in Cincinnati; though he certainly isn't helping our relatively poor race relations. He's entertainment. As is Ann Coulter, Howard Stern, Bill O'Reily, Jerry Springer, etc. Conservative doesn't necessarily mean racist, they're just good at making themselves much more obvious. We love shock radio. It's the worst (or best) when they interview celebrities, the questions are designed to corner 'em. They don't know how to be edgy and it's particularly bad in small towns. God I hate the radio!
August 19, 200717 yr Well, for one, WLW's unofficial mascot is Earl Pitts, and nobody's been harder on the Archdiocese of Cincinnati than Bill Cunningham. So most of all y'all's arguments was destroyed right there. It's hilarious how so many of you take Cunningham's bait, he's as much sarcastically extolling traditional values as mocking hippie/leftist nonsense. I've been listening somewhat regularly to his show since about 1989, he's easily the most brilliantly entertaining radio personality out there, although he loses a lot of his zing when he's got a national audience and can't make his endless obscure local references. http://www.earlpitts.us/
August 19, 200717 yr Jake, the problem is that even if he IS sarcastic, there are still dumb ass Republicans that interpet it as if it's scripture. When you're spreading information to the masses, it's important that people know when you're sarcastic or not.
August 19, 200717 yr Irrelevant. It goes both ways, it goes all ways. It's every individual's duty to figure things out for themselves. The whole point of sarcasm is to demonstrate that you understand how people you disagree with think; making fun of one's own opinions and exhorting a hirsutism of contradictory intellectual and barbaric snips is what Cunningham was born to do. His observations and declarations operate in a parallel world, sort of like pro wrestling, which sometimes affects the real world and in which the real world sometimes dips a toe but for the most part simply percolate (to use one of his favorite words) in a tautological realm.
August 19, 200717 yr People listen to these guys to have their opnions and prejudices validated, and to vicariously participate in the bashing of their political oppents or things they oppose. Yeah, sure this stuff is "performance", but why do people "pay" to see it (via tuning in, buying the books, paying the speakers fees)?
August 19, 200717 yr People listen to these guys to have their opnions and prejudices validated ... Yep.
August 22, 200717 yr WLW boycott threatened BY QUAN TRUONG | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER August 22, 2007 PHOTO: Protestors target WLW-AM (700) at its Kenwood offices Tuesday afternoon. Members of the Hispanic community want the station to make changes so there won't be future incidents like the promotional spot that aired last week they say was offensive. LEIGH TAYLOR/CINCINNATI ENQUIRER PHOTO: Denise Johnson holds a sign as part of a Tuesday protest against WLW for content they say is offensive toward minorities. LEIGH TAYLOR/CINCINNATI ENQUIRER CINCINNATI – The local Hispanic community says it's done trying to negotiate with Clear Channel. Organizers say the media giant must fix the problem that resulted in a second instance of what Hispanics say was blatant racial discrimination against them on WLW-AM (700). Click on link for more information.
August 22, 200717 yr This local group needs the national LULAC to contact Clear Channel corporate HQ with this boycott threat. CC is trying to break into the Latino market, and this would not be good press for them. What is happening with this local marketing department at WLW might not be in line with what corporate HQ wants to do, and corporate might need to set them straight. But a smart move, nationalizing the issue, when dealing with a national corporation. Locally the Latinos don't have much clout. At the national level, and in certain markets, they might. Do you think LULAC will make good on the threat? I am skeptical about boycotts and other forms of direct activism, but then those massive demonstrations the Latinos held last year, I think, around the immigration issue impressed me. That level of turnout demonstrates a lot of solidarity when this Latino community can get behind an issue. On one hand I hope WLW marketing comes to terms with LULAC, on another It would be interesting to see how a national boycott of CC would play out, how it would get organized and what it would look like.
September 4, 200717 yr The worst thing about this is that this no talent a__ clown is going to have a national show soon. Dunn: Cunningham out of line BY JOHN FAY | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER September 4, 2007 CINCINNATI - Reds outfielder Adam Dunn said Tuesday that recent remarks by WLW’s Bill Cunningham suggesting Dunn played while drunk crossed the line. Last Friday, following the Reds’ victory over Pittsburgh, Cunningham singled out Dunn and outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. for what he called a lack of hustle. Click on link for more information.
September 5, 200717 yr Racist billboards is one thing, but mocking a multi-millionaire pretty boy strike-out machine outfielder with no glove? That's going too far...
September 7, 200717 yr I was driving around with some girls from LA listening to that exact broadcast, me and my friend Nick were cracking up so hard and the girls had zero idea what Cunningham was even talking about because they don't follow sports and were from out of town. The way that Enquirer article reads is hilarious, the whole damn thing was so obviously sarcastic.
October 3, 200717 yr Talk show comments anger Muslims October 3, 2007 | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Ohio chapter Tuesday called for WLW-AM to reprimand talk show host Bill Cunningham for anti-Islamic remarks he made on the air Monday. Click on link for more information.
October 3, 200717 yr Bill Cunningham reminds me of the neo-rednecks that live in my mom's subdivision hanging out drinking beer in their garages that take up half of their front house facade. Oblivious to other cultures. Over the summer I had to hear their ignorance . Kill the *sand-n####rs* blah blah blah. Personally I find it funny that christians believe in the miracles of jesus (im not claiming I do or don't, Im agnostic) yet they'll be like "pshh...haha 72 virgins in heaven".
October 4, 200717 yr Did anyone hear the last Tracy Jones show on Sunday? Wow, that was fantastic radio. His show was always totally bonkers and the last show didn't disappoint. Hey David, Cunningham's smarter than all your DAAP professors combined.
October 4, 200717 yr Yeah right, professor Ellison would absolutely DESTROY Bill Cunningham in an argument. Please...
October 4, 200717 yr ^Well, they're both loud mouths. Ellison used to prattle on about moving the zoo to Mt Airy forest and developing housing on the old zoo property. He certainly thought he won the argument, but I wasn't so sure. At any rate, I don't think smartosity is very well determined by argument. Maybe jmeck was calling Willie smart as in cunning, or sly. Which he certainly is.
October 4, 200717 yr Anyone hear Kathy Wilson on his show last week? It was very funny. She could dish it out as fast as he could.
October 4, 200717 yr ^Well, they're both loud mouths. Ellison used to prattle on about moving the zoo to Mt Airy forest and developing housing on the old zoo property. Hehe I've heard him prattle about the war, healthcare, CDBG funding and the "GOP attack on cities". He's controversial and I love it. I've never been to Mt. Airy forest but it seems like it doesn't get used very much. The park board would probably go for that idea. Uptown Consortium on the other hand...ha. Also, Ellison, like many liberals, likes to propose things without considering where the hell the money is going to come from lol.
October 5, 200717 yr Also, Ellison, like many liberals, likes to propose things without considering where the hell the money is going to come from lol. Well that's no fun...I don't have think about it in SimCity so...
October 5, 200717 yr Hey Randy I downloaded SimCity *SNORE* lol dunno why I don't like it but it bores me.
October 5, 200717 yr >Anyone hear Kathy Wilson on his show last week? It was very funny. She could dish it out as fast as he could. Is this the "Kathy Y. Wilson" who used to write the "Your Negro Tour Guide" column for City Beat? Wow, she was a terrible writer. And I picked up City Beat for the first time recently in a few years, it's still terrible. The Other Paper in Columbus crushes it, Dan Williams and John Petric are each cosmically better than anyone in Cincinnati print journalism. Way better stories, way better writing, way healthier sense of humor.
October 5, 200717 yr ^Same writer. I am not a fan of her column, but I thought she did a great back and forth with Cunningham. I am not a fan of Cunningham either, but after hearing other talkers like his substitute, Scott Sloan, at least you realize how entertaining he is compared to the rest.
October 5, 200717 yr When I listen to Sloan I can detect that he's copying some of Cunningham's techniques. Also, Paul Daugherty is getting better but he's still nowhere as good as Andy Furman was. I think maybe part of the reason why Furman was fired was because they were paying him too much and they were able to get Daugherty for cheap since he already has a day job (and one that probably doesn't pay exceptionally high, maybe $65k). However, the change from Furman to Daugherty is at its core one from an ants-in-pants optimist and city booster to a monotone pessimist. Maybe Kathey Wilson is sharp in real life but I haven't seen her in person or heard her. Actually I don't think I've seen a picture of her. But her writing stinks. She had hundreds of chances to write a good column and it never happened, like a college paper columnist who takes themselves way too seriously.
April 30, 200817 yr My post on 700 WLW a while back continually draws interest to 700 fans. It is one of the top search results for "700 WLW" so people continually trickle in and make outrageous comments. If you feel like weighing in on the discussion great, if not then that's cool too...just check it out for the comedy. http://www.urbancincy.com/2007/09/700-wlw-continues-to-embarrass.html
April 30, 200817 yr ^What is that in reference to? I was completely confused. I just moderated the comments and deleted roughly 7 or 8 comments that I found "unproductive."
