May 9, 200916 yr C Trent had a pretty good blog from his days at the Post that carried over after the Post went under. He is distantly related to the Rosecrans of Cincinnati circa Civil War era.
May 9, 200916 yr Cutler was perhaps the worst sports radio guy this city has ever seen. I've never listened to a guy who took more offense to imagined slights.... He won't be missed. Wasn't a fan of Doc on Sportstalk, though I do think he was starting to come around. C Trent was the best beat writer the Reds had when he was at the Post. Why in the world the Enquirer would keep John Fay and not hire C Trent is beyond me. Like dmerkow mentioned, his blog was second to none for Cincinnati sports. What Cincy sports radio needs: Bring back the Two Angry Guys. I realize Gamble's still on 96.5 but he's on a regular morning show. No sports talk. Give Mark Amazon a full time job on 700 wlw. How this guy doesn't have a full time radio gig is beyond me. I guess he makes more doing whatever it is he does than he would doing radio. Leave Lance on the afternoons on 1530. He's a nice enough sports guy, but he's not good enough to be THE (only) sports guy in Cincy. Bring on Ken Broo full time for the sportstalk job. His Sunday morning sports talk is really the only radio program I make it a point to tune into.
May 11, 200916 yr If you follow any of the Enquirer or CTrent's twitterers, he's clearly got something going on and perhaps even with the Enquirer. It looks like his severance included a silent period provision that he is barely following right now. I used to like Lance a lot, but he would get really excited about something and then turn out to be dead wrong on how it would play out (manager changes, trades, and the like).
May 21, 200916 yr Jake posted this on the Streetcar thread: From today's Bill Cunningham broadcast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuPLyGGReoI
May 21, 200916 yr I miss lil willie cunningham... the only radio show I listened to when I lived near the nati... too bad he is national only 1 night a week...
May 21, 200916 yr If you were to calculate it, I'm sure commuters do in fact contribute a lot more to GDP than non-commuters. Just sayin...
May 21, 200916 yr If you were to calculate it, I'm sure commuters do in fact contribute a lot more to GDP than non-commuters. Just sayin... Since all commuters, categorically, have a job, that is a most likely true, but meaningless statement.
May 22, 200916 yr All commuters do not have jobs... better word choice would be most. People on welfare commute in buses or caddies.. 10 Illegal mexicans do it in a 1987 honda accord. Going to grocery stores, strip clubs and sometimes the dentist.

Going to grocery stores, strip clubs and sometimes the dentist. This is just semantics at this point, but does anyone every use the term "commuting" when they are not reffering to work travel? Does anyone say that they commute to the grocery store?

July 23, 200915 yr Bill Cunningham advocates "beat[ing] the hell outta" homeless people with "a big old cane, Singapore-style" Visit http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200907140050 to listen to the audio clip. At about 2:00, the really ridiculous stuff starts, with Cunningham saying we should "beat the hell out of the homeless."
July 23, 200915 yr Cunningham can thank his idol St. Reagan for kicking mentally ill people out of the hospitals and into the streets. And there's more than a few veterans among the homeless as well. So much for "Support the Troops." Cunningham sez: I think pain is a great motivator to refrain from certain forms of behavior. Fine. I propose that somebody whack Bill Cunningham with a baseball bat whenever he opens his bigoted, racist mouth in front of a microphone.
July 23, 200915 yr You really are clueless about a lot of things. Reagan is not responsible for closing mental facilities, and Cunningham is not a bigoted racist.
July 24, 200915 yr People like Cunningham, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity, et al are very wealthy white men who have built their entire careers by whipping up hatred and resentment against people who are less wealthy and less white than them. They give voice and justification for the most morally reprehensible impulses of humanity, and they seek to deny other people the same basic privileges of civil society that they themselves have greatly benefitted from. If the scriptures they supposedly believe in are to be taken at face value, then they'll have a lot to answer for someday. And so will their apologists.
July 24, 200915 yr You know nothing of the man, of his career or his background. You make a fool of yourself.
July 24, 200915 yr Fool to who? You? Him? The guy just got suspended for his antics. He cuts callers off like misty when she shares her views. All Cunningham wants to do is share his views and nothing else.
July 24, 200915 yr He's on vacation, been doing it for years! He is an entertainer! Of course he cuts off people, of course he shares his view, its HIS show!
July 24, 200915 yr He got suspended..lol They said it on one of the shows. http://700wlwforum.com/showthread.php?s=10e4bef87e8720a92a8908fa0e0f7a4a&t=3373
July 24, 200915 yr "Im really not a racist douchebag, I just play one on the radio?" Well, OK, but still pretty twisted, huh?
July 24, 200915 yr Cunningham was "suspended" because while his boss was on vacation for a week, Cunningham complained about how the boss wouldn't replace the broken mini-blind in the studio because of all the red tape to get the funding to do it. So, being the crafty entertainer he is, he offered to give some air time to any company that would come replace it for them. Within an hour a company was in there, and Willy was praising them all week. Then, it got out of hand as he kept it up.. they got new chairs in exchange for a few shout outs, new desks, some floor mats, someone moved the TV's mounted in the studio.. etc. Needless to say, the boss was a bit upset when he came back. Of course this is all bologna, and Cunningham was going to be off this week anyway. They're calling it a "suspension" to save face with the advertisers who actually pay a lot of money for 30 seconds of airtime, who are probably a little pissed that all they had to do was just show up and replace a mini blind, and they would have praises sung all week. Like has been said here, it's all a game. It's WLW. The homeless comment had nothing to do with anything, and anyone taking it seriously or getting upset about it needs to lighten up a bit. Calling someone like Cunningham bigoted and/or racist is a bit of an ignorant move. If you listen to him, the only people he ever puts down are people who don't try at life and live with a bloated sense of entitlement, and I'll stand by him at that.
July 24, 200915 yr It's completely absurd that anyone is defending Cunningham. The man said we should beat down the homeless with canes in order to inflict pain and keep them in line. I don't care if he actually believes that or if it's part of the character he plays on air.
July 24, 200915 yr It's all fun and games until some group of thugs actually decides to take Cunningham's advice seriously. Oh, wait...
July 24, 200915 yr ^ I'm sure those thugs listen to WLW. ^^And I'm sure you've all laughed at jokes that are for more out of line with political correctness before. And if not, like I said, lighten up a bit. He says things like this wanting half the people to get it, and wanting the other half to get all worked up about it, and he gets that reaction almost every time (case in point).
July 24, 200915 yr Sure I've laughed at politically incorrect jokes before. But this is not a joke. Or, if it is a joke (in his sick mind), it sure does not come across that way. He makes no indication whatsoever that he is joking around -- not in his tone of voice, not in a disclaimer saying you shouldn't actually go out and do it. Do you really think that half of the people listening "get the joke" and laugh, while the other half "get the joke" and get pissed off? You are ignoring the people that don't get the joke, take him seriously, and actually go out and do what he is telling them to do! When you are on the public airwaves, you have certain responsibilities. You're supposed to use the airwaves for the public good. Now, I wouldn't expect that much out of Willy; he's probably not capable of such things. But the least he could do is not tell people to go out and commit hate crimes!
July 24, 200915 yr If someone in Cincinnati goes out and canes a homeless person within the next few weeks, than yes, I will believe that there are people out there that don't get the joke, and take him seriously. His regular listeners know he’s joking.
July 24, 200915 yr Now I didn't get to hear this discussion, but I bet Willie didn't come out and say, "Today I advocate going out and beating the homeless." I'm sure there is more to the story and it is being taken out of context. Maybe he said, "If you are being harrassed by a homeless person, beat him off with a stick". I don't know, I could be wrong, but I doubt it!
July 24, 200915 yr There's a distinction between merely portraying and talking about violence, and inciting people to commit violence. The former is protected by the First Amendment; the latter is not. I don't have any fondness for gangsta rap, either, but that doesn't mean it should be banned.
July 24, 200915 yr Perhaps I will get crucified for saying this but the guy had a compelling argument if you actually listened to the segment. He was speaking in the context of a Public Courthouse building where homeless were pressumably using the exterior of the building to do their "business" instead of the public restrooms within the facility. He stated that since they could walk into the building and use those facilities, that those who didn't needed to be punished. He then went down the logical line of punishment solutions where imprisonment and fines simply do not have any possibility of actually punishing the offender. His suggested solution was corporal punishment in so much as to inflict pain but not injure the offender which would just result in the public paying for medical bills. Personally I could never do this if it were my job to do so, nor would I allow it to be done in my name as a citizen of said municipality but it certainly is a logical argument. It's also simply too dangerous to give the average law enforcement officer the opportunity to use physical violence that freely.
July 24, 200915 yr Thank you, I knew there had to be more to the story. Those who first posted how terrible he is for saying it, probably knew this but didn't think it was important to share.
July 24, 200915 yr Thank you, I knew there had to be more to the story. Those who first posted how terrible he is for saying it, probably knew this but didn't think it was important to share. any shred of evidence to this one or baseless accusation?

I'm sure there is more to the story and it is being taken out of context. Maybe he said, "If you are being harrassed by a homeless person, beat him off with a stick". I don't know, I could be wrong, but I doubt it! He starts out talking about how these homeless people could easily go inside and use the restrooms rather than doing so outside. Great point. Then, after a commercial break, he says that throwing the homeless in prison is too kind. Instead we should hit them with canes, "beat the hell out of them," with "5 or 10 swats". And if that doesn't work, we should blast them with a fire hose and "lather them up a little bit". And then he claims that after doing so, they will make a logical decision to stop using the bathroom on the courthouse. Sorry, but that's not reality. Thank you, I knew there had to be more to the story. Those who first posted how terrible he is for saying it, probably knew this but didn't think it was important to share. Err, I posted the link to the entire clip. Correlation does not prove causation. So if Cunningham is responsible for attacks on the homeless, shouldn't we be publically bashing hip-hop artists who sing/rap about violence against women? Shouldn't we ban video games like Grand Theft Auto? Shouldn't we sue the stuidos who produce movies that feature drug abuse? What about art that depicts nudity? It's the same thing. It's all entertainment and it all isn't meant to be taken literally. Except that there's no indication that Cunningham's comments are supposted to be entertainment. The station claims to be a news station. On the other hand, movies, music and video games all clearly fall into the category of entertainment.

October 8, 201014 yr Yeah, it sounds for real, unlike their many fake firings and suspensions. My guess is that Clear Channel decided that Eddie Fingers was just decoration and there was no reason to pay that extra salary, even though I'd bet he was getting paid way less than Jones. The other elephant in the room is Seg Dennison, since he fulfills no obvious purpose. I would be that Cunningham's contract keeps him around.
October 8, 201014 yr Well I'm going to reverse my speculation and say I think this is a prank. They hardly ever make a big change like this on their website, so this move was obviously planned. And for them to have ordered the web designer to change this in just a few hours today probably didn't happen, and there's no way they would have told the web designer to change things ahead of time.
May 27, 201114 yr Eric Deters, 700wlw personality and one of the big anti-streetcar people, in one of his youtube videos: http://www.cinawesome.com/this-eric-deters-video-is-newsworthy-but-it-aint-news-yet-not-awesome/?utm_campaign=twitter&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitter “I have many black friends, and I have many black clients. Why? Because cops are usually tazing naked black men, so I got cases against cops. I represent black men and I have black friends. But let me tell you something about this. On my flag football team, every black guy on the team–this is just calling it straight right here, no political preference here–almost every, AW THE HELL WITH THAT, EVERY BLACK GUY ON MY FLAG FOOTBALL TEAM, went out with, lived with, and was married to a white woman, and smoked pot. I just want you to know that I understand black culture. If you want to conquer, If you want to conquer an African nation, SEND WHITE WOMEN AND POT. This is the bulldog. Every dog has their day. I hope tomorrow is yours.”
May 27, 201114 yr ^ Just saw this. That is the most racist, bigoted thing I have ever witnessed from a public figure. Unbelievable!
May 27, 201114 yr Wow. I hope that piece of sh!t gets fired for that. EDIT: let's drop him off in the middle of Over-The-Rhine with his name written in big letters on his shirt, and let's see how well he fares. May 27, 201114 yr We gotta get on the Enquirer to report this. 700 has got to get on this as well. It's inexcusable for them NOT to report it or take action(in the case of 700)
May 27, 201114 yr Maybe not for long after CNN hears about this. Let's make sure they do. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 27, 201114 yr Unbelievable. (Or not, given who's doing the talking.) I wonder what Chris Smitherman would have to say about that. *crickets chirping*
May 27, 201114 yr He is a lifelong Democrat who only turned Tea Party several months *after* getting his radio gig.
May 27, 201114 yr Deters is a legal consultant for CNN's Dr. Drew Show. The CNN website has an "iReport" feature that allows the general public to upload their own news stories: http://ireport.cnn.com/. Hint, hint.
