Tom Luken's rants about Cranley were absolutely stunning.  His demagoguery has no bounds, and he was off the charts this time.  I'm sure a lot of conservatives who contributed to the Cranley campaign, maybe partly on the recommendation of one of their favorite kinds of Democrat (Luken), are royally pi$$ed that Cranley didn't deliver.  So Luken was probably taking care of Luken when he railed against Cranley.  I wonder if Charlie's decision not to run for judge of probate court has anything to do with the uproar?

The streetcar issue has brought out the hidden Shakespeare in some of the opponents.  King Lear, Richard III, and Thersites come quickly to mind.

Laurie Quinliven will co-host the afternoon 3-6 show tomorrow.  Should be interesting!

Who are these clenched-jaw men that call in? They are so angry with the world. Everybody's out to screw them. Maybe they all just have their jaws wired shut from getting their asses kicked for mouthing off to people.

Wonder if the announcers would be so willing to incite these screwballs if they were in person?

A little different being locked away in a remote studio...

I work with about 40 of these guys.  They're obsessed with conceal/carry issues, are convinced that they have the sound moral compass. That anyone who question those views is "weak".  They get really upset really quickly.  They don't understand money, taxation, IRA's, probability & statistics, etc.

What I've observed in these guys is that the hypothetical mugging or home invasion, and even their car simply not starting in cold weather, to them is a deep insult and sign of personal failing.  I've been mugged and it wasn't a big deal.  My car doesn't start every once in awhile so I bike or ride the bus to work.  The bus and bicycles are unforgivable signs of weakness to these guys.

I've never understood why these people are so obsessed with the idea of someone breaking into their house to the point where they're giddy at the idea of shooting an invader. Seems to me they're more likely to shoot a spouse or child than they are to shoot an actual invader. I'm pretty sure occupied home invasions are among the rarest of crimes...

Again it's an inability to understand probability & statistics, then the threat of the humiliation of being "beaten" by some statistical outlier that is assumed to be an everyday occurrence.  Here is a stat:

11. In 2010, where the victim-offender relationship was known, 37.4 percent of homicide victims were killed by an acquaintance; 22.2 percent were killed by a stranger; 18.4 percent were killed by an intimate partner (husband, wife, boyfriend, or girlfriend); 15 percent were killed by a family member; and 5.5 percent were killed by a friend.11

Listen to how much handgun advertising there is on 700 and 550.  I imagine that these conceal/carry classes are big money makers for the gun shops and for the gun manufacturers, who being for-profit ventures are always trying to sell more guns and ammo to current gun owners and bring new people in who didn't grow up with guns.

I've noticed that those guys watch way too many movies.

and how many people involved in car accidents know one another?

But that randomness doesn't seem tto bother anybody.

I’ve never bothered to look up the exact statistics, but I’d wager a typical downtown worker who has a long commute is more likely to be injured in a car accident than a downtown worker living in the urban core is to be a victim of a random assault/shooting.

Injury aside, if you’re mugged, you lose a few bucks and maybe a cell phone. If you’re driving and get into the tiniest of fender benders, you’re out at least a $500 deductible.

I can't help but think these clench-jaws actually do have a higher chance of being assaulted because of their abrasive personalities and expensive stashes of weapons that they boast to everyone about. Few things are better to steal than guns.

Hence the gun safe industry.  I shopped for safes for awhile and the number of safes Target World near Tri-County stocks is simply incredible.  They might have over 100 of those giant safes in stock at any given time.  Each of the safe manufacturers makes pretty much the same array of safes, but what's so hilarious is how their innumerable spec options, both in size and other features, is a parallel to guns (and trucks and stereo equipment and everything else men obsess over).

So on one hand there's all the speculation about mugging/home invasion scenarios, then there's all the daydreaming about evil-doers breaking into your gun safe, or more likely carrying it out of the house and sawing it apart somewhere out in Vinton County.

Turns out cities are safest places to live

"Whether you live in rural areas or the city, you’re much less likely to die from a gunshot wound — either from someone else or self-inflicted — than you are in a simple accident. Especially car crashes, which make up the bulk of unintentional injury deaths — motor-vehicle-injury-related deaths occurred at a rate that is more than 1.4 times higher than the next leading cause of death."

"But guns — whether used accidentally or with intent — are much less likely to be the cause of death than another tool: cars. And people drive more, drive longer, drive faster and drive drunker in rural areas than in urban ones, where they can walk or take public transit."

Listen to how much handgun advertising there is on 700 and 550.

The AM dial advertising is definitely a breed of its own.  When they break for commerial it goes from "buy gold" to "gun safes" to "home security systems" to "Obamacare survival guide" to "identity theft protection" and so on.  It is an empire built on paranoia.  The more they spread, the more money they rake in.  Ironically, or perhaps not at all, it sustains the same way religion does....

The best way to sell someone something is to scare them. Some of the products/services are just as dumb as what you see during judge shows and Maury.

Also tons of ads for low testosterone medical centers.

I wonder what these stations will be like in 20 years when all those men have stroked out from grinding their teeth for 40 straight years.

During Bill Cunningham, his TV show I mean.

Just as young, idealistic people are somehow found in every generation..... the old, grumpy, cynical, "this country is going to hell in a handbasket" crowd never dies out.

Will most of 700 WLW's listeners still be alive in 20 years?

I don't like how video games have all that talking now.

^ Used to be able to avoid it just by avoiding the RPG genre. No longer! Grumblegrumblegrumble

I don't like all these snow days.  In my day, we used to walk to school through the snow..... uphill..... both ways.

(I suppose my son will be doing that bit 20-30 years from now ;))

I guess Jon doesn't realize Cunningham does the AM radio version of what Stewart does on TV.

Sadly, neither do a lot of both of those guys' followers.

Cunningham is supposed to be funny?  Do people consider him funny?  (serious questions)

I worked at a place where 1 department listened to him all the time. One guy hated Cunningham, one thought he was hilarious because he would 'say anything' and 3 others thought the dude was some sort of messianic prophet.

Yeah I actually think he can be really funny at times, though I don't agree on his politics.

I grew up with my dad listening to him, and he thought he was hilarious because of the obvious hyperbole. He's purposely over the top. I worked in a car dealership garage through high school and college and it was probably 50/50 with most of the younger people finding him funny, and the older guys taking him seriously. I think WLW being a "news" station is to blame for the large percentage of listeners that don't realize most of what he says is tongue in cheek.

On air cunningham is not Bill Cunningham.  Its a persona he developed.

I've talked to Bill off the air a few times and he was a nice rational guy.  On the air, he develops this persona.

What scares me is the amount of people who take him 100% seriously though.

In my case, the oldest thought he was over the top funny & the youngest ones thinking he was real & wonderful.

I pointed out the ads to the younger guys, Geritol, Grecian Formula, Polident - they just shrugged.

Not only does his audience take him completely seriously, various later talk show hosts copied what works, which is his negativity and propaganda.  That's how 700 WLW and Brian Thomas came to build a 24-hour, 360-degree moat of misinformation.

Men don't just love wiseasses, they trust them.

That makes sense.  I've actually never listened to him and, for whatever reason, I get him confused with Don Imus...... who I was thinking of when I asked the question

Imus is like a boring Howard Stern.

Cunningham is like a playful Rush Limbaugh.

Ok........ Who listens to 700wlw?????????? I'm 27 so maybe listeners are of a different generation( I'm a millennial and I haven't met a single person my age that listens to 700wlw) but anyway I will say this I do travel a lot and crime in MANY other cities is far higher and far more aggressive than in Cincinnati particularly when it comes to gang violence, also please accept the fact that some people love to do what ever they can to trash the city whenever they can. Those people are very upset that their suburban home investments that are not gonna be paid off for the next 20 years isn't looking all that great now. In addition City living is simply White HOT right now it's just a fact here and around the world, people who was interested in leaving the city's core are mostly gone now the bleeding has stopped a radio station can talk for 20 hours a day trashing the city but it's just not gonna change the facts on the ground that this city is GOLD.

I know a few people my age that listen to WLW. They all do it for sports, and think the political content is a joke.

Just another thursday for 700wlw...

Classy anti-streetcar/anti-mahogany/anti-gay/anti-black caller:

"I won't vote no black dude in. I look at other cities thats got black mayors and stuff and I see how those cities in bankruptcy..thats what the problem is. We have a bunch of GAYS and BLACKS running this city and its going downhill in a hurry"
And
"CHRIS SEELBACH I HOPE YOU'RE LISTENING. NOW GO GET YOUR SEX CHANGE FROM THE TAXPAYERS"

700 WLW is the best

For the first time, WLW-AM won the prestigious Marconi Award for the nation's best news/talk station, regardless of market size.

The National Association of Broadcasters had honored the city's No. 1 station as the large-market "station of the year" in 2000, but it had never been nominated as best in its format until this year.

WLW's fake 'Big Ben Warning' goes too far

A joke warning issued during radio station 700WLW warning women about Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has drawn criticism for its references to sexual assaults.

The "Big Ben Warning" running on the local talk radio station declared "all women ages 18 to 40 are to use extreme caution, especially if heavily consuming alcohol ..." ahead of Roethlisberger's appearance in Saturday's playoff game at Paul Brown Stadium.

"If you see Big Ben and he flashes 'Little Ben,' you are asked to report it to authorities immediately," announcer Garrett Sabelhaus says in the ad.

Cont

"It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton

WLW's fake PSAs are probably the best works they put on the air. They used to have a bunch of old ones on their website, but I can't seem to find them now.

People need to lighten up if they take huge personal offense to a joke - they should be subject to a mandatory 8 hours listening to various versions of "The Aristocrats."

Some of the best people in radio work for WLW, even if we don't like the content as UO users.

You would think that our local media beat reporter would be keeping an eye on this situation, but he's too busy reporting on what Kit Andrews has done since she left television.

I don't really think it is that newsworthy. She was pretty much a fill in minor host on WLW on the weekends, and after she was removed from the air in the winter, nobody really remembers her. She is pretty much a "never was" from a radio personality standpoint and was primarily using it to promote her law practice. Lisa Wells was akin to the guy on 550 who shot his wife a few years back.

It did not make news because no one cares and no one misses her or even remembers her.
