Posted May 15, 200619 yr On Saturday, May 13 there was a public open house for the Grand Opening of the Richard E. Lindner Varsity Village. It's eight floors with the AD's office at the top and the various coaches on the lower floors plus Academic Center, Museum Health Services, Sports Medicine, a ton of Locker Rooms and a huge practice gym. I also took a tour of the Campus Rec Center next door. I was truly impress by all of it. I would think potential students and athletes will be blown away by all the amenities. Here are my pics from the tours. First, Varsity Village Atrium/Museum area Nice to see their trophies displayed Offices on the sides, Atrium in the middle If you want to see the AD you must get by this woman. Every chair type under the sun seems to be here Auditorium Sports Medicine area on the 2nd Floor There are literally a dozen locker rooms on the first floor Practice Gym Campus Rec Center The top part is student housing, the lower half is where the rec center is, I think. The buildings seem to be connected. Four lane running track, these bright yellow areas are throughout the building. They are tornado-safe zones. The track is elavated, very cool A little rock climbing Pool area, not the best pics of it. B-ball and waterfall, nice stress relief The Rec Center has a huge floor with at least six full size courts. Bigger than the one in Varsity Village, Huge! Student Housing, these have been done for awhile Charlton Place looks to be done. It needs some landscaping. I noticed one SOLD sign. There is some rough housing on Jefferson, this looks good.
May 15, 200619 yr WORLD CLASS - facilities and pix! Thanks for the insiders tour. (that lady doesn't look too tough)
May 15, 200619 yr great job. i am glad someone finally posted some uc campus shots. i've been wanting to see more of whats up there. bgsu has an elevated track too in it's 'ol 70's era rec center, but that uc building is oh, prob just a teeny tiny bit nicer.
May 15, 200619 yr Fantastic, as I said in the other thread, I am pissed that I for got to go! Thanks for the great pics though.
May 15, 200619 yr The most recent issue of Civil Engineering Magazine features the new UC buildings and the architecture of the campus (both on the cover and main story).
May 15, 200619 yr I think that's the top of Nancy zimphers head with her arms crossed and the black leather jacket
May 15, 200619 yr Nice facilities, but the exterior of Varsity Village looks way too 70's for me. Charlton Place is dandy!
May 15, 200619 yr Yes- you're correct. That is/was Zimpfer in that shot. Fantastic pictures of the new building. I was there as well on Saturday, and was cool to be able to walk through literally every part of this building. (I was even checking out the kitchen of the faculty club part of the building and was walking inside the freezers.) I was on one of UC's varsity sports teams (graduated in 2004), and I can tell you that the new facilities in this building are easily 100x better than what is currently there at UC. After seeing these new locker rooms, the old dingy locker rooms in the Armory Fieldhouse probably should be condemned...
May 15, 200619 yr great shots - when I was a student @ UC (almost 10 years ago) the concepts of "main street" & "varsity village" were being developed. Now it's so amazing to see the project completed. The only downer is missing out on these facilities when I was a student! (selfish view, I admit...)
May 16, 200619 yr Awesome shots - I am glad someone got some pictures. The C-paw at the entrance looks great.
May 16, 200619 yr I've had some shots around VV that I have been sitting on...so here is my collection: Welcome: Schott Field: Garage under Tennis Courts: Landscaping: New Location for the Big "O" Tennis Courts:
May 16, 200619 yr ^Your a UC student, right. Do you use the rec center? From what I understand, anyone in Cincinnati can join the club. If I lived in the Clifton area that would be the gym to use.
May 16, 200619 yr Nice pictures, but I am sorry, those buildings seem like they are trying to replicate the worst of 1970's architecture. They're hideously bland and inhumane on the exterior, with almost no connection between interior and exterior space. Do they have something against windows at UC?
May 16, 200619 yr While the athletic facilities look like they offer quite a bit of amenity, the administrative/office interiors look like a complete afterthought. I don't suffer from claustrophobia, but I think after spending 5 minutes in that building, I would definitely sympathize with those who do. This is what happens when buildings are designed solely as sculpture to be awe-inspiring from the outside. I'm sure anyone who uses the athletic facilities will be quite happy (I may be one of them,) but I feel sorry for anyone who has to spend any significant amount of time in there working. Apparently no lessons were learned from the DAAP building. *edit - great pictures btw, moonloop. I think you've really captured the essence of this building (appealing or otherwise.) Really dig the exterior shots of the rest of campus too. :)
May 16, 200619 yr ^Your a UC student, right. Do you use the rec center? From what I understand, anyone in Cincinnati can join the club. If I lived in the Clifton area that would be the gym to use. Yes this is true...anyone can become a member at the Campus Rec Center (CRC). Full time UC students receive a free membership (paid for in Student Fees). Part time students receive a discounted rate, and the general public must pay a regular membership fee to use the CRC. I would say that the general membership fee is reasonable considering what is offered at the CRC.

May 16, 200619 yr Thanks for the link! Works out to about $65/month, which is less than places like Tri-Health, but more expensive than some other places around...not worth a special trip, when you factor in transportation, but if you're nearby, it could make sense.

May 17, 200619 yr I don't like the looks (the "inhumanity") of the buildings, but they're spectacular on the inside. Thanks for the tour!
May 17, 200619 yr The only building I have an issue with is the student housing above/attached to the rec center. I recall reading they had to make the windows small based on its exposed position in campus, although you would think curtains would work. The rec center itself has gotten some pretty good reviews in national publications, but I have not seen anything on the Lindner Center.
May 22, 200619 yr >This is what happens when buildings are designed solely as sculpture to be awe-inspiring from the outside ....designed soley to look impressive in the catalog, impress campus tours, etc...
May 23, 200619 yr They are interesting, that's for sure. That and Ohio State's new recreation center definately win the "Weird Awards" for the collegiate athletic facilities. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
May 24, 200619 yr The most recent issue of Civil Engineering Magazine features the new UC buildings and the architecture of the campus (both on the cover and main story). Thanks to JohnOSU99, this issue is now online(at least the cover story is) and there are some very nice evening pics. The article is very detailed. http://www.pubs.asce.org/ceonline/ceonline06/0506feat.html
