Ah, small towns...very nice.

Anyone want to go to the Community Thanksgiving Dinner at the Fairgrounds? :D

That's a nice downtown; it's a pleasant-looking place.

That's my old hometown all right, but I would say that it doesn't look as nice as it once did. I seem to say that all the time, but it is true of most of Ohio's small towns and quite a few of the larger cities too. It does have the obligatory Odd Fellows hall and Masonic Temple also. Your shots of the courthouse do it justice. One can still see my family name on the side of one building though the business it once advertised is long gone (the family still owns the building, so the sign stays, lol). West Main St. is omitted, I guess Summit Street didn't go that direction. I think the best remaining downtown building is the one that now houses Fifth Third Bank on the N.W. corner of Barron & Main. It's across the street from the U.S. Bank (formerly Preble County National Bank) which is shown. It is to the left of the Masonic Temple. It has a decent art deco Post Office too also on W. Main. Anyway, I'm sure Eaton is proud to be included in Summit Street's monumental effort to visit every Ohio county seat. There is a joke about someone who is confused about whether he is dating a girl from Eaton or eating a girl from Dayton, but that is too crude to mention.

Anyway' date=' I'm sure Eaton is proud to be included in Summit Street's monumental effort to visit every Ohio county seat.[/quote']

Eaton and the other towns should erect signs proclaiming their pride and the date of the visit!

And  to your "unmentionable" joke.

I thought the saying goes like this......

Would you rather be "Dayton" a girl from Eaton or "Eaton" a girl from Dayton?

While going through this thread a memory flashed into my little mind and I had to post this picture from my collection of fire apparatus photos.  The fire engine shown was in service at Sidney, Ohio.  The photo was taken on June 22, 1955 at the Central Western Firemen's Association parade at Eaton, Ohio.  If you look at the buildings behind the ladder truck you will notice that they are the same as those shown in the photo that Summit Street took.

The building in the center of the photo was home to Kaysers Shoes which sold Paul Parrot and the Rand brand (there's another name listed but I just can't read it).  The building to the right where Rich-Land Interiors was in 2004 was home to a 5 cent to $1.00 store 49 years earlier!

That ladder truck is a beast! Solid rubber tires, two-wheel mechanical brakes -- it took brute strength, a lot of it, just to drive a machine like that.

My mother's from Eaton.
